The Year 7 Leadership roll call and Ms Alexander wanted to work with our students to improve
the school but to do it in an interesting and catchy way. They approached Ms Walsh to see if there
was something the Year 7 leadership rollcall could do. Ms Walsh suggested doing something on
saving energy, as the schools power bills are really high.
With the help of Mr O’Keeffe our Year 7 students made a music video using the tune “What
Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction, with Jessica Morrison from 7L changing the lyrics to fit the
agenda of energy saving.
Laura Luchetti and Bree Anlezark were asked to sing. It took them one week to memorise the
song. It took about three weeks to get the film right. They had to wear bright clothing, but no
green because it wouldn’t show in the film because they made it in the green room.
Ms Alexander and the Year 7 leadership roll call hope this video has encouraged everyone to turn
off the lights and save Lithgow High School’s power bill.
PRINCIPAL
The last half of Term 4 is always very busy as reports are written, we celebrate student achievements at
Presentation Days and planning for the following year is put into place. The School Evaluation Team of
parents, students and staff has been briefed on the 2013-14 Plan, following its negotiation and approval by
Western Region. The draft timetable for 2012-13 has been developed. We are expecting more than 160
new students into Year 7 so an additional class has been formed for 2013.
Our successful Year 11 Presentation Day was held on 14 th November. Following the awards our 2013 HSC
students have negotiated their way into the Study Room and have completed a “make over” to ensure it
operates increasingly successfully into the new year. Our student leaders also distinguished themselves by
organizing the outstanding Field Fiesta Day on Friday 16 th November. They were strongly supported by Ms
Dean, Mr Dean, the PDHPE teachers and the broader staff to ensure a great day which strengthened
House sports and school spirit.
As we approach the end of the year, we will farewell several staff. Not all staff changes will be clear until
the new year but I would like to mention three colleagues in particular:
Ms Cheryl Perry is our longstanding Head Teacher Welfare. Reduced student numbers have led to an
executive reduction at the school. Ms Perry’s commitment, focus and role have been critical in the setting
up of The Hub and The Base, the effective transition of Year 7 students into appropriate classes, and the
management of the school’s Welfare Team. This has included the recent transition to Every Student Every
School structures for students with special needs from Term 3, 2012. Ms Perry has ensured that her team
and students are strongly supported, effectively skilled and are greatly valued members of the school
community. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
We will also farewell Mr Matthew Williams who has been our exchange teacher from Ontario in Canada
for 2012. Mr Williams has been an outstanding addition to the TAS staff and has taken on a diversity of
roles, (especially in Mandatory Technology courses) that have been well away from his usual teaching area.
He has actively involved himself in the broad life of the school and brought a good humoured “can do”
approach to classes and extra curricular programs. Mr Williams’ family has travelled widely in Australia and
New Zealand during 2012. We thank Mr Williams for his outstanding contribution to the life of our school
and we hope that the Williams family return to their Canadian winter with many warm memories of their
year in Australia.
Mr Brian Adams, our Agriculture teacher, will retire at the end of the year, having been at Lithgow High
School since 2003. Running the school farm in a teaching role requires a breadth of knowledge and stoicism
and an immense commitment of time and energy. Mr Adams’ students recently won the Hoof and Hook
competition at Scone with two different steers raised at the school. Mr Adams has run the
school’s Corriedale sheep stud and has introduced Sustainable Agriculture to many of Year 7 students as
part of their Independent Learning Projects. His strong commitment and bluff good humour will be greatly
missed by students, teachers and parents.
We are now looking forward to our regular meeting to discuss shared issues and plans with our school’s
neighbours on Monday 10 th December and to our HSC Results which will be issued on Wednesday 19 th
December. Feedback from the examiners is that our students took the HSC very seriously and worked hard
for all examinations.
As this is the final newsletter for 2013, I would like to thank our hard working teachers, support staff,
students and our community for your strong support during 2012. Next year promises to be very
challenging as restructures to education regions occur, and the system moves towards increased local
decision making at school level. For Lithgow High School, 2013 will be our 50 th Anniversary at Pau Street
and a year of consolidation of successful programs as we move beyond National Partnerships funding and
into new executive structures. National Partnerships and the Team Leadership for School Improvement
program have provided extensive experience and skill development for our staff. Our school is very well
prepared for future educational challenges. We wish all of our school community best wishes for Christmas
and for a safe return to another outstanding school year in 2013.
Despite the inclement weather the Field Fiesta went ahead due to the preparation and efforts of the
SRC, the ALPHA leadership roll call and the Year 10 Leadership roll call. The program required some
modification as field events could not proceed, nevertheless the show must go on and it did - proving to
be a very successful day. The day began with a House Parade and the best dressed House member was
selected: Hycintha Bartlett, (pictured in the first picture below). Blaxland received 50 bonus points for
their house.
Other activities throughout the day were: MINUTE TO WIN IT (run by the Year 10 leadership with the
help of Mr Williams) and HAUNTED HOUSE – run by Year 11 leadership – John Riecken, Caitlin Ogg,
Amy Engeler, Kasey and Dayna Fitzgerald, Kane Bott and Mrs Ogg. Other activities included: OBSTACLE
COURSE, CHOCOLATE DROP, DONUT EATING, WATER BOMB TOSS, GANGNAM STYLE DANCE OFF. The
BBQ was courtesy of the SRC. A band from Sydney Far Away Stables, entertained the students at lunch
time. The highlight of the day had to be the gangnam-style dance off and the teacher – student
challenge.
The winning House on the day with the most participation points was BLAXLAND – Congratulations!!!
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PLANNING
Most Year 11 students have made a successful transition into Year 12 HSC courses. The formal
assessment schedule has commenced and students should have completed their assessment plan
for the next four terms. If you were present at the Assessment Evenings held for Year 12 this term,
the assessment plan is also known as “Phillipa’s Fridge Page” and should be hung where all in the
household can see it.
Year 10 students are preparing for their end of year celebrations on the 12 th December. They are
working towards their Presentation assembly which follows on Friday 14 th December. The two
Stage 5 TVET Metal and Engineering classes and the Stage 5 TVET Hospitality classes have reached
completion of their Certificate I courses with an OH&S White Card and a First Aid certificate. This
puts these students in a strong position when applying for apprenticeships and traineeships.
Twelve Year 9 students have commenced a pilot program in TVET Metal and Engineering. The
success of this program will affect the funding of more joint courses for Year 9 students in the
future. The advantage of early entry into such courses is the early completion rate and therefore
the enhanced competitiveness for employment.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TRANSITION
The time is rapidly approaching when a new Year 7 will be joining us. This year’s Year 6 students
have been up visiting Lithgow High, meeting lots of the teachers and students; slowly learning
their way around. We have had the Small Schools’ Day and the Parent Morning Tea already. It was
wonderful to meet many of the nervous but excited people: the parents seemed more nervous
than the students! On 3 th December we have Orientation Day which will be a great opportunity
for our already well-transitioned students to meet everyone else who will be in their year and
class next year. Let’s hope for good weather but it will be a great day either way.
Our current Year 7 students are continuing to impress me. Having read a whole lot of reports
lately, I’m thrilled with the effort made by the students this year. They have learnt so much, had
many great experiences and developed strong friendships. Congratulations to all of our Year 7
students who have made the most of every opportunity this year
Last Tuesday we were fortunate
enough to have staff from
the Department of Sport and
Recreation come out and train a
group of staff, students and local
Lithgow Community Workers
in Indigenous Games. The plan is for
a student-run Indigenous Olympic
Games to be held on 4 th December.
It should be a fabulous day for
everyone. If you are interested in
getting involved in the day, please
let me know!
YEAR 8 CASTLE MOUNTAIN
Lithgow High School has offered many excursions throughout the years. The highlight of the
school calendar for Year 8 is an excursion to Castle Mountain on the banks of the Hawkesbury
River near Wiseman’s Ferry.
Outdoor Adventure Camps are an educational and team building based camp. The family owned
business has run successfully for over 25 years. Over 60 students set off in the pouring rain with
five teachers to partake in a variety of team building activities which included canoeing, raft
building, bushcraft, archery, campfire sing-along, flying foxes, high ropes and abseiling. The mud
pit treasure hunt in the search for pretend prehistoric dinosaur bones was a hit with students even
though they ended up covered from head to toe in mud.
The camp ran over three days. It was an overall success culminating in a presentation night which
included short skits; a fashion parade; war chants and acoustic performances from students and
teachers alike. The camp was highly successful. Not even the continued pouring rain over the
three days could dampen the Year 8 spirits. All students enjoyed the concepts they learnt
immensely and were exceptional ambassadors of the school.
NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE SCHOOLS CADET PROGRAM
During sport for Term 3 some students
from Years 9 and 10 undertook the Rural
Fire Service Schools cadet program. On the
17 th October the students competed in the
Cadet Championship and graduation day at
the Tony Luchetti Sportsground in Lithgow.
The day consisted of schools from Bathurst,
Oberon and Lithgow areas competing in
different challenging events. Events
included hose and hydrant, relay pumping,
knapsack relay and bucket brigade. The
students performed very well and were a
credit to the school. The program will be
running again during Term 3 next year. The
students who participated include: Ethan Forester, Tiarne Newham- Collins, Brenella Abdel-
Rehim, Tiah Gibbs-Minner, Reegan McKenzie, Jade Cameron, Taylor Bradley, Deneille Blake &
Jenna Heath.
SCHOOL ON TOUR
Lithgow High School students recently conducted their annual “School on Tour” which is run by
the Creative and Performing Arts faculty. It involves travelling to nine schools across three days to
perform a show packed full of music, drama and games. The schools include the local public
schools such as Lithgow, Cooerwull, Zig Zag and Wallerawang as well as some of the smaller
schools such as Hampton, Capertee and Cullen Bullen.
The tour is a highlight of the Creative and Performing Arts calendar and the students involved
have been rehearsing many afternoons since the beginning of the year. All students performed
brilliantly and were a credit to Lithgow High School, showcasing the vast curriculum our school
provides. The students were well received at all schools, making the hard work well worth the
effort.
PERFORMANCE EVENING
Lithgow High School will be holding an open performance evening on Tuesday 4 th December,
7.00pm at the school. This is an opportunity for parents, caregivers, family and friends to come
along and enjoy the talents of their children. It is an amazing night showcasing what students have
learnt in the Creative and Performing Arts faculty. It is a fabulous evening and one not to be
missed!
You will enjoy the live music of our class bands, studio band and see our award winning films,
drama performances and visual arts displays.
The CAPA department use this evening as their only fundraiser to buy extra instruments for the
students. There will be a small cost of $2 at the door.
BEEF BONANZA - SHOW CHAMPION
The first weekend in November saw Agriculture students from Years 9 to 11 attend the Upper
Hunter Beef Bonanza in Scone. We took two steers with us to the competition. One was “Boris”
who was bred by the school from our own cow, and the other was “Chuck” who was donated by
Ian Coleman from Glen Davis.
Boris entered the Lightweight Class and was judged Champion Lightweight Steer on the hoof.
Chuck was entered in the Light Middleweight class and while he did not win in the Hoof
competition, he topped the Carcase competition in his class.
This is a remarkable result for the school and a just reward for the students who fed and prepared
them for the show.
As well, students competed in the Junior Judging and Parading competitions, some for the first
time. All students had a great time over the four days and represented Lithgow High admirably.
NEXT YEAR’S CHAMPION - DAISY’S CALF
The school would like to thank Ian Coleman for
providing Chuck, and Jeff Demanuel from Demanuel
Limousin Stud at Mt Lambie for providing the sire which
produced Boris. As well we thank Bedwells whose
stockfeed was used to prepare the steers and Ross and
Trent Johnstone who helped in clipping and
transporting the steers. Without the support from these
commercial interests we would not be able to supply
the students with such great educational experiences.
she said; “It was a great experience I really did love it and would
definitely sing again".
Well done Cindy! Your voice is beautiful and we are very proud of
your achievements.

Parents' guide to the new NSW Australian Curriculum
K–10 syllabuses which commence in 2014
What is the Australian curriculum?
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), in
collaboration with states and territories, has developed agreed Australian
curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science and History. Each of these learning areas includes content
statements that represent essential learning for all Australian students.
How is Australian curriculum being implemented in NSW?
In NSW, the Board of Studies has worked closely with teachers and key education stakeholders to develop
syllabuses that include the Australian curriculum content and further detail that clarifies learning. As a
result of this work, Kindergarten to Year 10 syllabuses provide direction to ensure greater consistency
between NSW schools.
When will the new syllabuses for K–6 incorporating Australian curriculum be taught in NSW?
Years 7–10
2011–2012 Syllabus and support material developed by December 2012
 Sectors plan implementation support
2013 Familiarisation and planning
2014 Years 7 and 9: English, Mathematics, Science and History – start teaching
2015 Years 8 and 10: English, Mathematics, Science and History – start teaching
What will my child learn at school?
The new syllabuses build on the strength of the existing NSW curriculum. Many features of the new K–10
English, Mathematics, Science (incorporating Science and Technology K–6) and History syllabuses are
retained. Literacy and numeracy remain important areas of focus in K–6, where essential foundation skills
are developed.
The syllabuses identify essential knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that students are
expected to develop in each learning area. They are designed to provide flexibility for teachers to develop
their teaching and learning programs to meet the needs of their students.
Years 7–10
English
Students build on and refine their language skills through activities involving speaking and
listening, reading and writing, and viewing and representing.
They learn about language and literature through working with a wide range of print, spoken,
visual, media, multimedia and digital texts.
Students interpret and express their views on what they hear, see and read.
They create written and digital texts, and deliver formal and informal presentations.
Students study a wider range of texts that give them experience of quality literature, Australian
works, multiculturalism, Aboriginality and Australian identity, and Asian perspectives.
Mathematics
Students develop their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding through a range of learning
experiences across:
Number and Algebra, eg financial mathematics, ratios and rates, and equations
Measurement and Geometry, eg angle relationships, trigonometry and Pythagoras' theorem
Statistics and Probability, eg data collection and representation.
They develop their problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning and communication.
Students develop a deeper understanding of Statistics and Probability.
Science
Lithgow High School – Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 13

Students develop their skills in science inquiry through hands-on practical experiences,
including student research projects.
They further develop their understanding about how evidence-based scientific knowledge
explains the Physical World, Earth and Space, the Living World and the Chemical World.
Students learn more about the importance of the contribution and influence of science in their
own lives and in finding solutions to personal, social and global issues.
History
Students gain a broad understanding of world and Australian history from ancient to modern
times through the teaching of historical overviews.
They gain a deeper knowledge of history through depth studies such as Ancient India, the
Ottoman Empire and Japan under the Shoguns.
Students learn about 20th century Australian history through the Australians at War and Rights
and Freedoms depth studies.
They experience an inquiry-based approach to learning, developing key historical skills in
research, source analysis and communication.
In addition to subject-based content, all syllabuses address important contemporary themes and general
capabilities as students prepare to live and work successfully in the 21st century. These include Australian
curriculum cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities, and other learning across the curriculum
areas identified by the Board of Studies.
Cross-curriculum priorities
General capabilities
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures
Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia
Sustainability
Critical and creative thinking
Ethical understanding
Information and communication technology capability
Intercultural understanding
Literacy*
Numeracy**
Personal and social capability
Other learning across the curriculum areas
Civics and citizenship
Difference and diversity
Work and enterprise
* Literacy is embedded throughout the English K–10 Syllabus. It relates to a high proportion of the
content descriptions across K–10. Consequently, this particular general capability is not tagged in this
syllabus.
**Numeracy is embedded throughout the Mathematics K–10 Syllabus. It relates to a high proportion
of content across K–10. Consequently, this particular general capability is not tagged in the syllabus.
GOODBYE MR WILLIAMS,
IT WAS A GREAT YEAR DOWN UNDER!
How time does fly. It was a little less than a year ago that my
family and I landed in Australia and started our year long
adventure down under. I must admit that when I first
arrived it was a real adjustment getting used to life in a
different country and working at a different school. But that
did not last long, and I have had a great year at Lithgow High
School. I have made some great memories, both at school
and while on excursion with students from school. I have
had a great time meeting new students and colleagues and I
would like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff and
students of Lithgow High School for making me feel welcome
and accommodating me for the past year. Oh, and if any of
you are ever in the vicinity of Alexandria Ontario Canada,
please look me up, I would be happy to show you the
hospitality that we have been fortunate enough to
experience while here in Australia.
