Milne Valley Middle School School Year: 2009-2010

Milne Valley staff and parents work together to create a safe, friendly, calm and tolerant
atmosphere in which all students have the opportunity to achieve their potential. Since July
2008 we have been an authoried International Bacclaureate Middle Years Program (MYP).
This is an exciting time where we are working together to meet the needs of our school
community as we follow this path. We are continuing to work with students and parents to
tailor policies and programs that provide students with an enriched learning experience.
Our newest addition to our school programming is extended French. Students come to our
school who have started the program in grade 4 and we continue with the middle years. This
year we offer grade 6 and Grade 7 and in September 2009 Grade 8 will continue the
program.
Our school offers students not only a full academic program but also a wide variety of
optional subjects such as family studies, design and technology, enriched I.T., and media.
Regular physical education, including both intra-mural and inter-school teams, is also part of
the school program. Enrichment activities include a math club which prepares students to
write the Gauss and Pythagoras Math Contests, Lego League Club,Anima Drawing club, to
name only a few.
As a transition school, Milne Valley's focus is on preparing students both academically and
socially for their secondary school careers. Students are challenged to do their best at all
times, and the school honours their efforts with a variety of awards.
The School Council and the Student Council are both very active in supporting numerous
school activities including fundraising campaigns, volunteer initiatives, clubs, guest speakers,
dances and graduation celebrations.
Milne Valley also offers a rich variety of out-of-school learning experiences such as overnight
camping trips for Grade 7 and 8 students, theatre and art gallery excursions, an Ottawa trip,
Science Centre trips and visits to historical sites. These trips are used to enhance and
support the curriculum being taught in the classroom.
Milne Valley Middle School is located on Underhill Drive near the Don Valley Parkway and
Lawrence Avenue. The school was formerly known as Milneford Junior High School and
became a middle school in 1987. Our students come from six feeder schools : O'Connor,
Sloane, Victoria Village, Cassandra, Ranchdale and Three Valleys Public Schools.
Information about the
success of our programs
comes from a wide variety
of student assessments.
These assessments are
based on clear
expectations for all
learners, consistent with
those described in The
Ontario Curriculum.
Milne Valley Middle School School Year: 2009-2010
The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning.
Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an
integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress
towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using
strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments,
classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests.
Schools use assessment information and information from other sources
to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools
identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input
is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments,
teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way,
schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a
supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students.

Based upon our school's various assessment data,
Milne Valley has implemented a number of
improvements centered around student
achievement, especially but not exclusively, in the
areas of mathematics and language arts
Curriculum Improvements Already Implemented
Some of the improvements implemented to date
include:
♦ scheduling core team meetings to co-ordinate
short and long term curriculum plans and to
provide in-house professional development
♦ identifying staff with subject specific expertise to
provide support for new teachers in each grade
♦ purchasing resource material to complement
the Revised Ontario Curriculum Guidelines
♦ adapting curriculum plans to meet the needs of
special needs and English as a second language
students
♦ increasing staff communication across grades
using horizontal and vertical planning
New Implementation Projects/Programs
In addition to the curriculum-based improvements,
the school has also implemented:
♦ school code of behaviour
♦ school planner
♦ structure for servicing special education students
♦ homework policy
♦ evaluation policy
Areas of Focus
This year our school has chosen to focus on the
following areas:
♦ contiuned training of staff as an authorized IB
MYP school
♦ implementation of standardized assessment
policies
♦ full implementation of our curriculum plans for all
subjects

♦ integration of curriculum in a number of areas,
especially with science and design and
technology, computers in the classroom and
literacy and math across the curriculum
♦ community partnership programs with our family
elementary and secondary schools
Preparation for Secondary School
All of the above initiatives are being implemented
with a view to improving overall student academic
achievement and to preparing students for success
at the secondary level.
