Shortly, all ratepayers will receive a detailed brochure outlining Council’s proposed rate strategy which has been developed to maintain, further develop and enhance our community facilities. Council will be asking the community and property owners for feedback about the following three options: • Option 1: Rate peg increase 2.7% (statutory increase that all councils receive) • Option 2: Rate peg 2.7% + Community Facilities 4.04% SV (10 year period) • Option 3: Rate peg 2.7% + Community Facilities 4.04% SV (10yrs) + Operational 3% SV (permanent) Please visit the Hunter’s Hill Council website www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au for detailed information, the rates calculator, and answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ’s). Council also has its Integrated Planning & Reporting (IP&R) documents on public exhibition. This includes Councils Community Strategic Plan and Long Term Financial Plan (LTFP) which outline Council’s financial position and reasons why Council will consider a SV. Comments will be received up until Monday 10 December 2018. Lisa Miscamble GENERAL MANAGER St Charles 160 Years celebration Mass of Thanksgiving St Charles Borromeo Church Ryde-Gladesville Parish celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving for 160 years Catholic Primary School at Ryde last Wednesday. Chief celebrant was Parish Priest F Greg Morgan FVD with Concelebrants Fr John Alt, Fr Alfedo FVD and Fr Daniele FVD. School Assistant Principal Mrs Maree Simpson welcomed special guests who included Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM, Lane Cove MP and Minister for Planning and Leader of th House Anthony Roberts MP, Clr Penn y Pedersen representing the Mayor of Ryde, Clr Roy Maggio, Michael Krawec Inner West Region Director and Paul Cronin Inner West Region Consultant. Entance Procssion included Schol Leaders Isabella Talarico and Cooper Brown, Sports leaders Tahlia Tuckerman and Clifford Manley (Milan House), Claire Needs and Luca Fagan (Bennelong), Milani O’Donahue and Luca Pozzolungo (Gell), Eleni Latilevu and Samuel Fedele (Mercy). EASTWOOD COMMUNITY NEWS Laser to treat skin cancers By Dr Peter Kim Australians suffer more from skin cancers and sunspots than any other nationalities than people in any other country on the planet. Melanoma is the best-known and most dangerous form of skin cancer and can only be treated surgically. Luckily, most skin cancers found in Australia are non-melanoma skin cancers (Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Cancers) and can be treated non-surgically. Popular non-surgical treatments include freezing (cryotherapy) or diathermy (cauterising). These two techniques are popular as the setup is inexpensive and many clinics are able to offer the service. However, patients often complain that treated spots recur. Skin cancers can also be treated with prescription-only creams, but the effectiveness of this option depends on the patient’s skin type. The biggest problems with this technique is that the doctor has no control over the outcome and it is not easy for the patient to work out whether they’re properly applying the cream and this can affect the success rate. But due to recent technological advancements, patients can now access another effective treatment option as an alternative to surgery - laser skin cancer therapy. This approach involves the use of laser technology to treat the skin cancers by ablating the affected areas using a “layer by layer” approach. Utilising the precision of a laser, the cancer is completely removed down to the roots and is performed under the direct supervision of a doctor. This also ensures minimal healthy skin surrounding the cancer is damaged allowing for a shorter healing time while at the same time, providing effective treatment without the need for surgery, while also delivering a better cosmetic outcome. Dr Kim provides all the above-mentioned non-surgical skin cancer treatments and skin cancer checks. Diwali Festival adds to Ryde’s multicultural calendar I am really looking forward to this Sunday, when I will join hundreds of community members to attend the first ever Diwali Fusion Festival of Ryde at Meadowbank Park, supported proudly by the City of Ryde. Diwali is the festival of lights that is celebrated by millions of people of various cultures around the world. Having a community festival to mark such an occasion here in the City of Ryde not only celebrates our multiculturalism but also provides a vibrant event for our entire community to enjoy. The Diwali Fusion Festival of Ryde will have some extremely tasty food on offer as well as fireworks, music and dancing and what has been described as the biggest Indian fashion show occurring. I hope to see you all there. Grants to benefit the community Diwali Fusion Festival of Ryde is one event that has received funding from the City of Ryde’s Community Grants Program. The Community Grants Program offers assistance ranging from $2,000 up to $10,000 to locally based, not-for-profit community groups, clubs and organisations which carry out special projects for the community. The next round of applications for funding under the Community Grants program opens on Monday 19 November. Details can be found at: www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ communitygrants. Consultation on planning proposal A reminder that community consultation is now taking place on the planning proposal for 112 Talavera Road, Macquarie Park. Once the community and stakeholder consultation phase has been completed a report will go back to Council. Council will then review all submissions and make a recommendation to the NSW Government, who will determine whether the planning proposal proceeds or not.
