Appreciating a Chevy commercial
Max Lapthorne
max@lockportlegend.com
Crs
Last Wednesday, I
turned on my TV and
something wonderful
happened.
I pressed the power button,
the television came to
life and I watched for a few
moments before it cut away
to a commercial break.
That’s when the magic happened.
An entire commercial
break played, spanning
multiple minutes, and there
wasn’t a single political
attack ad — or political ad
of any kind — included.
Sure, there were still those
terrible Chevrolet ads where
they show people cars they
already own while standing
in giant warehouses, but I’ll
take it.
Elections are monumentally
important, and I
believe that a well-informed
electorate is a requirement
for our country to be all it
can be. But political ads
don’t really work toward
that goal. They aim to
smear, exaggerate and often
even mislead voters in an
attempt to garner support
for one side or another. So
Rock Bm Orland Park
while I thoroughly enjoy
doing my civic duty on election
day and examining all
the new political leaders in
the days that follow, I will
enjoy channel surfing a bit
more now that I’m not being
inundated with political
propaganda at every turn.
But there’s more to election
season than annoying
advertisements, especially in
the Lockport area. We have
a slew of stories covering
a variety of elections with
local ties, and you can find
them all on Pages 6-7. Notably,
Lockport resident Mike
Kelley was elected to serve a
second term as Will County
Sheriff, during which he
said he plans to expand the
department’s efforts to fight
the opioid epidemic.
Two local referendums
were on the ballot, as well.
Residents of Lockport
Township voted in favor of
a referendum that will allow
the Township Government
to negotiate a waste pickup
contract for all residents —
with an option to opt-out —
as opposed to each resident
being responsible for
hiring their own company.
Township Supervisor Ron
Alberico sees this change
having a positive effect
on the wallets of residents
as prices for waste pickup
should drop dramatically for
many.
The White Oak Library
District’s referendum, which
asked for an increase to
the limiting tax rate, failed
for the fifth consecutive
election. Support for the
referendum has fluctuated
in the last few elections, but
more than 60 percent of voters
said “no” to the proposal
last week.
Regardless of political
party, age, race, gender
or level of apathy toward
politicians, election day is
a day of special importance
and potentially seismic
consequence. I always feel
gratified casting my ballot,
and I hope The Legend has
provided you with sufficient
coverage of races
in the area this election
season. That being said,
bring on the nonsensical
Chevy commercials and
sometimes-funny Geico ads
— I’m ready.
