Clarification
In the Nov. 8 issue of The
Mokena Messenger, we
ran a story titled, “Lincoln-
Way Central coach takes
(10) trails less travelled in
nature hike challenge.” To
be clear, Coley O’Connell
did not hike the entire
2,200-mile Appalachian
Trail in only 14 days;
rather, O’Connell hiked
portions of it over the
course of 14 days, in
what is referred to as
the 14 Days in 14 States
Challenge. Readers can
find out more about that
here: appalachiantrail.
The Messenger
regrets any confusion
caused by the article.
accepted at the restaurant.
Early bird registration cost is
$16R. After November 8, additional
fees apply. For more
No politics, just patriotism at MES Veterans Day assembly
Amanda Villiger
Assistant Editor
With about half the students
in the elementary
school gymnasium, one
might expect it to get a bit
rowdy in the space that normally
hosts a variety of sports
and extracurricular activities.
But that was not the case at
Mokena Elementary School
the morning of Nov. 7.
Students invited their own
special veterans — whether
that was a grandparent, aunt,
uncle or parent — to join
them as the students sang
songs and read letters and
poems during their assembly.
Efren Dizon, of Mokena,
who served in the Navy
from 1968-1974 after being
recruited from the Philippines,
said the assembly was
a nice opportunity to meet
other veterans, build a bit of
camaraderie and take a minute
to remember the past.
The assembly was largely
coordinated by MES firstgrade
teacher Kathy Arduino,
of Mokena, whose
father, Jim Woods, served in
the Navy from 1968-1979.
Woods said he and his
wife Pat have a son who
served in the Navy, and one
of their nine grandchildren
has expressed interest in
joining the Navy, too.
“I think our one grandson
wants to join the Navy, too,
but he’s a little young for
that yet,” Woods said. “He’s
6.”
With all the military memorabilia
around their house,
Woods said he is not surprised
when the grandchildren
ask about his days in
the military.
“It’s very different times
[now], and you have to realize
that you have to work
together as a team,” Woods
said. “It’s usually a team
building effort, especially
serving aboard a ship, or
any military unit, you have
to get along with everybody
Mokena Elementary School first grader Alan Haag reads a letter he wrote to veterans
during the Veterans Day assembly at the school on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Navy veteran Efren Dizon shows off some of the letters and pictures from MES students
after the Veterans Day assembly at the school.
and you have to be willing to
work hard.”
At the assembly, Woods
said it struck him that the
youngsters seemed to have
“a good understanding of
what the veterans do and the
sacrifices.” He said that’s not
always the case, especially
for children so young.
Though most of the students
are likely too young to
understand the veterans’ experiences
and sacrifices, Dizon
said the event provided
an opportunity for people to
reflect on how war affects
people and families, and
how veterans help make this
country what it is today.
“We have this freedom we
are enjoying in the United
States,” he said. “Not like
other countries — especially
in the [developing nations],
just like where I came from,
the Philippines.”
Doctor lends hand — er, foot — for 25 years in Mokena
T.J. Kremer III, Editor
It was back in 1993 when
Dr. Phillip Narcissi first
opened his doors to the Mokena
community with his office
on Front Street. Twentyfive
years later, Narcissi’s
roots are still firmly planted
in Mokena, with his office
now at 19841 Wolf Road.
While Narcissi’s medical
specialty is podiatry, his
connection to the community
is what really makes the
doctor stand out.
Narcissi credits his parents
— Mase and Laverne,
who allowed Narcissi to take
a line of credit against their
home in order to open up
shop, and continue to work
around his office today —
and his uncle Dr. Dennis
Don’t let your business
short this season.
BE SMART. ADVERTISE IN
The Mokena Messenger
Wolny, for instilling in him
the sense of community he
exhibits today.
Doing the best for his
patients often went above
and beyond typical medical
care, as Narcissi worked to
strengthen relationships with
his patients.
“I think that I’m accessible;
I try to help people
when I can,” Narcissi said.
“People will contact me
even when I’m not here. I’ve
also coached in the community,
been involved with the
schools and the churches in
the community. [It’s] more
of a ‘mom and pop’ feel…
than a corporate feel. More
of a personal touch than a
corporate touch.”
Dr. Phillip Narcissi, owner of Mokena Foot and Ankle
Clinic, 19841 Wolf Road, celebrates 25 years in business in
Mokena. T.J. Kremer III/22nd Century Media
Having been a staple in
the community for so many
years, Narcissi has watched
Mokena and his business
grow together, and he said
the future looks bright.
“Mokena’s been fantastic
— well, the whole area
of Mokena, New Lenox and
Frankfort has been fantastic
to me,” he said. “We do what
we think is a really good and
fair and honest job for people.”
Winter weather is quickly approaching
and Lincoln-Way Central recently partnered
with the Village of New Lenox to ensure senior
citizens are prepared to drive in whatever
Mother Nature brings.
Auto Shop students performed vehicle
safety inspections for about 25 senior citizens.
They checked fluid and antifreeze
levels, belts, hoses, tested the battery and
inspected tires for unusual wear or cracking/dry
rot between the treads or on the
sidewall.
Additionally, they checked lights, turn
NAPA Auto Parts in New Lenox donated
What do you like to do when
not in school or studying?
I like to swim competitively
and act in school plays
and community theater.
When is your dream job?
My dream job is to either
become a doctor or a lawyer,
so I can help people.
Connecting with adoctor who just gets your kid doesn’t need to be like finding aneedle in ahaystack.
At Franciscan Physician Network, we believe that communication –both during and after your visit –iskey to
cultivating great doctor-patient relationships. This is why we offer services like MyChart –aneasy-to-use site that
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know
that I’ve been swimming
competitively since I was 5
years old.
Whom do you look up to and
why?
I look up to my mom because
she is a very hard
worker and shows me how
to achieve my goals.
What do you keep under
your bed?
I don’t usually keep anything
under my bed, but my
two cats like to hide under
there.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
There are so many wonderful
teachers at Noonan it
is really difficult to choose
just one; however, I really
enjoy the way Mrs. French
uses humor in her class and
pushes me to be the best student
I can be.
What’s your favorite class
and why?
I really enjoy math because
Mrs. Huguelet helps
Photo submitted
me understand and solve difficult
problems that will prepare
me for the future.
What extracurricular(s) do
you wish your school had?
I wish that Noonan Academy
had a pool so that we
could have a swim team.
If you could change one thing
about school what would it
be?
Our school is amazing, but
I’d really like to have a cafeteria
where we could get a
hot lunch occasionally.
What’s your best memory
from school?
My favorite memory from
Noonan Academy was when
I played Scuttle in “The Little
Mermaid” in last year’s
school play. I got to act with
my sister and my friends,
and it was a very memorable
experience.
Frankfort teen charged after
17-year-old fatally shot
A 17-year-old Frankfort
another Frankfort teenager
was fatally shot Nov. 4 while
the two teens were handling
a loaded revolver, the
Frankfort Police Department
confirmed in a statement on
Nov. 6.
Officers responded to the
19900 block of Lily Court
around 6:13 p.m. Nov. 4
in response to a report of a
male juvenile with a gunshot
wound to the chest,
according to the release.
The 17-year-old victim was
transported to Silver Cross
Hospital via ambulance and
later pronounced dead by
medical staff.
During the investigation,
police learned the victim had
been visiting a 17-year-old
male friend at the Frankfort
residence, according to the
release. The two teens reportedly
had a .357-caliber
revolver and several rounds
handling the gun, a live
round discharged and struck
the victim, police said.
An 18-year-old male at
Evidence technicians with
the Frankfort Police Department
November
Marian Kraus was born
in Czechoslovakia and grew
up in Germany. And it was
there, as a teenager, he fell
in love with photography
through the lens of a Pentax
35mm.
It was a common enough
hobby with a common
enough camera. But since
then, Kraus has traveled the
world, and for the last 20
years he has made a living —
and a name for himself — as
a professional photographer,
specializing in architecture
and design photography.
Now, his photos have
landed him in Orland Park,
with his first show at the
Orland Park Public Library.
Through the end of November,
Kraus’ photos line the
second-story walls, blown
up to several feet in size,
taking up most of the wall
and arresting the attention of
passersby.
Kraus lives is Naperville,
and library Department Assistant
Duke Phelps said
staff discovered Kraus’ work
through his website. Phelps
said the library regularly
hosts artists and uses the
second-story wall as a gallery
of sorts.
“We liked the way he
photographed the natural
landscapes and the environment,”
Phelps said. “The
way he photographs nature
is similar to the way he photographs
the manmade work,
we liked his photography,
Will County Sheriff
Lockport resident Mike
Kelley will be serving a
Jim Reilly in the Nov.
6 General Election, according
to unofficial results from
the Will County Clerk’s
website.
Kelley was named on
57.83 percent of ballots,
while Reilly received 42.17
percent of votes. There were
240,669 total votes cast, with
Kelley receiving 139,188 as
“We basically ran on our
accomplishments of the last
four years,” Kelley said.
“We just wanted the people
of Will County to know our
message and what we accomplished
the last four
years and what they had to
look forward to if they reelected
us.”
Kelley began his career
with the Will County Sheriff’s
he plans to continue to focus
administration has had success
fighting the epidemic in
the unincorporated areas of
to expand their efforts into
county municipalities.
“We started a lot of great
programs in the last four
years to combat this heroin
epidemic,” Kelley said.
“What I really want to do is
extend our resources into the
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Morrison holds off Rashid
in D17 county commissioner
race
Republican incumbent
Sean M. Morrison defeated
Democratic challenger Abdelnasser
Rashid in the race
for Cook County commissioner
to represent the south
suburban 17th District in the
Nov. 6 General Election.
Morrison received 60,778
votes good for 50.79 percent,
compared to Rashid, who
garnered 58,896, a 49.21
percent share, with 257 out
of 257 precincts reporting as
of Thursday, Nov. 8.
Rashid conceded the race
and congratulated Morrison
on the victory, according to a
statement released the morning
of Nov. 7. He called the
day “bittersweet” but was
proud of his “hard-fought
campaign with an underdog
spirit.”
The race was too close to
call the evening of the election,
with 238 out of 257
precincts reporting as of
10:15 p.m.
“It it not the outcome we
hoped for,” Rashid said in
the statement. “I offer my
congratulations to Sean
Morrison and hope that he
will be the commissioner
that all Cook County families
need.”
Morrison’s campaign issued
a statement around 1
p.m., Nov. 7 and thanked the
voters for electing him to a
four-year term.
“I’ve worked hard over
the past three years to protect
the interests of Cook County
taxpayers by taking on and
defeating terrible tax policies
and irresponsible spending,
Morrison wrote in the
statement. “I look forward
to working with my board
colleagues to move Cook
County forward in a positive
and productive direction.
Our residents deserve nothing
less.”
It was Morrison’s first
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
Homer Glen couple’s mini
therapy horses bring joy to
others
Two Homer Glen residents
have made it their mission to
bring smiles to people’s faces,
regardless of age.
As a 5-year-old and
7-year-old duo, they might
look a little different than
their peers, but do not let the
four legs, tail and fluff be a
distraction from the positive
impact they have had on
those they meet.
Tex and Wally are two
miniature therapy horses
owned by Dave and Tina
Durbin. Over the last year,
they have visited foster children,
nursing homes, hospitals,
schools, memory care
facilities and veteran homes.
“It’s every age,” Tina said.
“I mean, you can see when
we walk into a hospital,
these people who just look
so sad, smile. Their eyes
light up. This is really very
cool.
“People in memory care
facilities, inevitably someone
will remember something
and share a story with
us. [Tex and Wally] make
people remember. The children
at the schools who
don’t speak talk to them. I
mean, it’s amazing the impact
they have.”
The Durbins got Tex and
Wally last October from a
woman in Wisconsin who
fell ill and needed to find a
These next couple of
print cycles for The
Messenger are a bit
odd, in that we’re publishing
this week after Veterans
Day and next week right
before Thanksgiving. So,
with that in mind, I thought
it would be appropriate to
combine the two for this
editorial.
Firstly, I’d like to extend
a heartfelt, “thank you,”
on behalf of The Messenger
and myself to all
of our veterans out there.
It’s a simple gesture that
doesn’t seem like it’s
nearly enough, considering
the sacrifices our veterans
make, but it’s a sincere
one.
It’s sometimes difficult
to think of our nation’s
history in terms of wars
fought far and wide across
the planet over the course
of our nearly 250 years
of existence as a country.
Certainly there are arguments
that we’ve been
involved in both just and
unjust wars, but those are
political discussions and
have no real bearing on the
men and women who willingly
give themselves to
an institution that’s bigger
than any political stance or
party.
Our political squabbles
and daily struggles sometimes
can seem petty
compared to the hardships
our men and women in uniform
have endured. Where
we debate — sometimes
fiercely — what our role
in the world should be, we
must remember that there
are those who serve who
will be forced to carry out
our rhetoric.
More often than not, I
believe, our armed forces
are able to put aside political,
religious, ethnic,
racial, sexual and all manner
of other differences
in order to serve as one
cohesive group with one
overarching goal: protect
our country.
For those of us who
have never served, myself
included, it can be inspirational
— and even a bit
daunting — to listen to
tales from soldiers when
they return home. It can
also be deeply saddening to
hear the tales of those who
never made it home, who
gave the ultimate sacrifice
in order to put our words
into deeds.
It’s those sacrifices that
I’m thinking of when I’m
counting my blessings this
year.
I’m thankful that there
are people who have that
altruistic bone in their bodies
who do for others what
they cannot or will not do
for themselves.
I’m thankful, and proud,
that one of those people
happened to be my own
grandfather, Tom Sr. — or
Bumpa, as we called him
— who served in our Navy
in the South Pacific during
WWII.
I’m thankful to be in a
town where the value of
the lives of those who’ve
served this nation are
remembered and honored
“Firstly, I’d like to extend a
heartfelt, “thank you,” on behalf
of The Messenger and myself to
all of our veterans out there. It’s a
simple gesture that doesn’t seem
like it’s nearly enough, considering
the sacrifices our veterans make,
but it’s a sincere one.”
in everyday life, not only
through monuments and
special places of reflection,
but also through the whole
essence of what Mokena
is and whom it is here to
serve.
I’m thankful that we
have the freedoms that we
do because people have
believed in those principles
so much that nearly
everything else on Earth
is secondary to protecting
those gifts of freedom.
And I know I’m going to
get ahead of the calendar
a bit here, but I’d also like
to list some things that I’m
still hopeful for.
I wish for a world of
peace, where we no longer
send men and women into
perilous places.
I wish that our nation’s
children will never have to
know the realities of war,
except through textbooks
or old soldier’s stories
passed down through the
generations.
I wish for a day when
conflict can be resolved
through diplomacy, when
we, as a collective people,
can become more tolerant
and accepting of each
other, without fear of
“others” whom we may
deem as dangerous because
of conflicting political or
social concepts.
I know these wishes
may never come true, but I
continue to hold out hope. I
believe this is the best way
we can honor those who’ve
fought and died for our
beliefs.
Noonan religion teacher Victoria Magas.
“Holy Fire” is a national, Catholic,
Former Mokena resident, sports reporter stands up to cancer
Analisa Trofimuk, Freelance Reporter
Longtime Mokena resident and former sports reporter Terry Boers performs a comedy routine at CD&ME in Frankfort on Saturday, Nov. 10. Boers, a
cancer survivor, has decided to make the most of his second chance by spending more time with his family. Analisa Trofimuk/22nd Century Media
The blaring television cast a
glow on the faces packed into the
hospital room as Terry Boer and
his family watched the Cubs beat
the Cleveland Indians in the 2016
World Series. This was a win Boer,
former Sun-Times columnist and
WSCR host, anticipated throughout
the year, only he never imagined he
would be watching Game 7 from a
bed at Northwestern Hospital while
recovering from surgery on his jaw.
Boers was diagnosed with jaw
cancer in 2016.
“It was the hardest health year
of my life, a year that continues
to leave me with self-doubt, not to
mention a healthy dose of worry
about my own mortality,” Boers
wrote in his book, “The Score of
a Lifetime: 25 Years Talking Chicago
Sports.”
That year for Boers consisted of
several rounds of chemotherapy,
30 doses of radiation and multiple
surgeries, including a procedure in
which his jaw bone was replaced
with a portion of his fibula.
A 25-year-long career hosting
670 The Score came to an end when
he aired his last show in January of
2017. He then spent the next few
months at his home in Florida with
his wife.
It wasn’t until that March when
his health started to turn around
and he began his second chance
at life by following through with
a promise he made to friends and
colleagues for decades: to write an
autobiography.
“The Score of a Lifetime” only
took Boers six weeks to write and
is filled with anecdotes from his
life and career complete with witty
comments. He ordered Mocha
Frappuccinos for a week straight at
the Target Starbucks in New Port
Richey, Florida, where he edited
the manuscript.
“I had years and years worth
of notes from covering Chicago
sports and they finally came in
handy,” Boers said.
Aside from being known for his
years in sports reporting, Boers has
built up a reputation in his community
for his humor. So much so
that a local business near Mokena,
the community Boers lived in for
26 years, had been recruiting him
to participate in stand-up events.
Dean Vaundry, the owner of
CD&ME in Frankfort, asked Boers
on a number of occasions to show
off his talent for jokes at various
events hosted at the venue.
Boers admitted he never had
much of an interest in stand-up but
decided to give it a try as part of his
second chance mantra.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Lincoln-Way
Theater Guild hosted
their first fundraiser at CD&ME
in partnership with WGN’s Mike
Toomey. Among the performers
was Lincoln-Way student and
singer Aliyah Pechtold, comedian
Bill Bunker and Boers, who was
featured as the special guest.
Boers went up in front of a crowd
of almost 200 and told stories that
didn’t make it into his book. One
of the stories involved an altercation
with a police officer in South
Chicago Heights where Boers was
told by the officer “to never return
to the area again”.
Proceeds from the event will
go to scholarships awarded by
the Lincoln-Way Theater Guild to
three Lincoln-Way graduating seniors
pursuing the arts.
“We are so fortunate to have
such an incredible turnout this year
and for all of our performers,” LW
Theater Guild Executive Director
Carrie Beemsterboer said.
Boers’ attitude toward stand-up
is that it was a fun thing to do but
he is not looking to start another
career. He plans on continuing
his second chance at life enjoying
spending time with his family and
watching his five grandchildren
continue to grow.
“It’s not about who you are, it’s
what you leave behind,” Boers
said.

Tacos can be a pretty
easy meal to throw
together, especially if
you cook and freeze a few
separate pounds of ground
beef ahead of time to speed
up the prep.
Because of that — and
also because, well… tacos!
— taco night has always
been a well-loved favorite
around here. So I was
surprised that this week’s
new-to-us Mexican-inspired
recipe became an instant hit.
The recipes on 100daysof
realfood.com (and the corresponding
cookbook and
Facebook page) never disappoint,
and the “real food”
wisdom you’ll find there is
definitely worth reading and
applying.
This crockpot carnitas taco makes for a nice switch to
standard tacos. Beth Krooswyk/22nd Century Media
So I figured its carnitas
recipe would be good to try,
and it is. Plus, my cousin
Kelly had raved about a carnitas
recipe before, so I asked
her for it, and it was this exact
one. Winner-winner.
Not that it happens each
week, but I won’t take away
our Taco Tuesdays altogether.
Instead, I’ll just add this
slow-cooked, savory carnitas
recipe in to our meal rotation
to mix things up a bit.
Maybe you should too.
2 pounds boneless pork shoulder or butt
roast*
3 teaspoons oregano
2 teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cumin
1 large onion, cut in large wedges
3 cloves garlic, sliced or crushed
Optional toppings: shredded cheese,
tomatillo or other salsa, guacamole or
avocado slices, diced jalapeno, chopped
cilantro
Directions
Add spices to a small bowl to mix.
Cut and place onion in crockpot.
Cut pork into a few large pieces and layer
evenly over onion.
Coat pork with spice blend; add garlic
over pork.
Serve warm on corn tortillas, flour
Mokena-based Family Martial Arts victorious in competition
Megan Schuller
Freelance Reporter
Members of Family Martial
Arts in Mokena proved
last week that not only is
martial arts for all ages,
but it can be a family oriented
sport, too. More than
50 local Lincoln-Way-area
students of the martial arts
school, ranging in age from
5 to 75, competed in the
Chicago Martial Arts Association
TaeKwonDo Championship
on Nov. 5 in Carpentersville.
Students came home
showing off the medals
around their necks and hoisting
three Grand Championship
trophies. The students
competed in two main areas
that had specialty competitions
within them. Form,
or “poonsae,” is a routine
of a series of patterns that
focuses on the execution
of specific moves. The second
is breaking, which includes
a series of moves,
such as breaking wooden
boards.
“I feel good after breaking
a board and knowing
that I am powerful enough to
break it,” 11-year-old Aidan
Sullivan, of Frankfort, said.
Parent Sandi Levato, of
Tinley Park, said that the
staff at Family Martial Arts
has taught her daughter invaluable
lessons.
“It’s not just a school, it’s
a family,” Levato said. “My
daughter has learned confidence,
focus and strength
from the masters who love
our children just as much as
we do.”
According to Program Director
Krista Danielewicz,
the Family Martial Arts
School — or, “dojang,” as
it’s called — was one of the
schools with the most students,
of all ages, competing
on the mat.
“The core of martial arts
is confidence,” Danielewicz
said. “The tournament is one
Twelve-year-old Abigail Buhle, of New Lenox, shows a
powerful high kick that she did in competition to earn a
bronze metal.
of the stepping stones in creating
that confidence.”
Practice started more than
two months ago for the competition,
which Danielewicz
said the students take very
seriously.
“I enjoyed earning the
medals and participating
in the competition. It was a
lot of good practice,” said
6-year-old Lucas Cottardo,
of Mokena.
Warren Tessarin, 73,
of Tinley Park, said that
the competition was a
way for him to challenge
himself.
“It’s a test of mental and
physical forms,” Tessarin
said. “This is a great cardio
fitness workout to test your
body, but my favorite part is
the comradery earned with
people and learning new
things.”
Twelve-year old Abigail
Buhle, of New Lenox, said
that she was proud of the
two bronze place medals.
“I did well for my very
first competition,” Buhle
said. “It teaches you the
courage needed to do stuff
like breaking.”
paid off.”

The Dish
Focus on family, community at Fox’s on Wolf
Nuria Mathog, Contributing Editor
Fox’s on Wolf has been a Mokena
staple for roughly a dozen years,
but the restaurant’s story is half a
century in the making.
Tom and Therese Fox opened up
the original location in Beverly in
1963 with a focus on pizza, sandwiches
and “good food, fair price,
good service.” The Beverly restaurant
on Western Avenue is still up
and running, and Fox’s has since
expanded to several additional
sites, including Orland Park in
1973 and Mokena in 2006.
Today, Tom and Therese’s grandson
Ryan Fox manages the Mokena
and Orland Park locations, and is
the third generation to help run the
family-owned business. He started
by washing dishes when he was 13
and worked his way up, becoming
general manager roughly a year ago.
“The restaurant was a huge part
of my life,” Ryan said. “It was a
good learning experience, definitely.
... [It required] hard work,
dedication. I enjoy the restaurant
business, I enjoy dealing with people
on a daily basis. I enjoy making
people happy.”
While Fox’s is primarily an Irish
restaurant, the menu offers a variety
of Italian-inspired dishes, and
its handmade pizzas are always a
popular choice with diners. Customers
often opt for the Fox’s
Special ($29.99 for a large pizza),
which is topped with sausage,
mushroom, onion and green pepper,
Ryan said.
“The pizza’s been the same since
1963,” he added.
Another standout entree is the
Italian combo ($13.99), which features
three types of pasta dishes
on a single plate: the restaurant’s
signature lasagna, penne pasta and
cheese ravioli topped with homemade
marinara sauce. Other bestselling
items are the fish and chips
($16.99), featuring hand-battered
Icelandic cod, dipped in a Guinness
batter and then flash-fried; and the
charbroiled rib-eye steak ($19.99), a
12-ounce cut with garlic lemon butter.
or salad, while other entrees also are
served with a choice of two sides.
For appetizers, diners can dig
into delicacies such as the pretzel
bites ($9.99), served with a cheddar
Guinness cheese sauce, and
Reuben rolls ($11.99), a culinary
fusion consisting of shaved corned
beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and
cream cheese, stuffed into crisp
wontons and served with Thousand
Island dipping sauce.
The restaurant aims to a familyoriented
experience, complete with
live entertainment for customers
of all ages, Ryan said. There are
coloring contests for children, and
entertainers — such as balloon
artists and magicians — regularly
perform at the restaurant on the
weekends.
“We kind of stick to our roots ...
we have bands, single entertainers,”
Ryan said. “St. Patrick’s Day
is huge for us, because we’re an
Irish restaurant.”
First-time customers can expect
a meal crafted entirely from fresh
ingredients and based on family
The charbroiled rib-eye steak ($19.99) is a 12-ounce cut with garlic
lemon butter and the diner’s choice of two sides (pictured are the baked
potato and rice pilaf).
The fish and chips dish ($16.99) at Fox’s on Wolf in Mokena features Icelandic cod made with a Guinness
batter and flash-fried.
recipes that have stood the test of
time, he said. The dishes served at
Fox’s on Wolf are the same ones
that Ryan grew up eating.
“I think one of the biggest things
that I’m proud of is that I am third
generation,” he said. “There’s not
many restaurants that can say, ‘It’s
been in the family for three generations.’”

introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
DJ Armbrecht is a senior on
the Griffins boys bowling
team.
How long have you
been bowling, and how
did you get started?
I’ve been bowling since
eighth grade and my grandma
got me started in bowling.
What do you most enjoy
about the sport?
Being better than my competition.
What is your biggest
strength as a bowler?
I think my mental game
would probably be my biggest
strength -- just staying
focused.
What does this year’s
team do really well?
I would say that we have
really good team chemistry.
I’d say we can help each other
out a lot since we’ve been
bowling together for so long.
What are you most
looking forward to this
season?
I’m looking forward to
going to state. I think me and
my team are able to compete
this year and go on to state.
What advice would
you give to someone
starting out with
bowling?
I would say that it’s a process.
Take your time, and
obviously you’re not going
to be the greatest in the
world when you start, but
you’ll get better and progress.
You’ve just go to keep
practicing.
Do you have a role
model?
Yeah, Jason Belmonte.
He’s the No. 1 bowler in the
world. He’s a two-hander. I
think I bowl a lot like him.
Are you involved in
any other sports or
activities?
I do some basketball and
baseball.
What are your plans for
after high school?
I was hoping to see what
would happen with the
scouts that come to bowling,
if they talk to me or
anything, then we’ll see
what happens from there.
But if not, two years of
community college and then
we’ll see where it goes from
there.
If you won a million
dollars tomorrow, what
would you do with it
and why?
I think I’d spread it
around the family and give
it to as many people as I
can.
Interview conducted by Contributing
Editor Nuria Mathog
Lwe
From Page 35
Edwardsville thanks to a
steady dose of pressure from
the defensive line, resulting
in six sacks, two forced
fumbles and fumble recoveries,
and an interception by
Kenny Palmer.
“In practice, we always
work on our passing angles,”
Shelton said. “Our coaching
staff calls great stunts,
and we feel we work collaboratively
together and
that’s honestly how we get
it done.”
Shelton had a sack and
a fumble recovery, while
teammate Adrian Wilson
had two-and-a-half
sacks and Mick Stewart
had two sacks. Mike Manning
had the other fumble
recovery.
Meanwhile, the East offense
could hardly be contained
by the Edwardsville
defense, as Baltz
went 14-of-24 for 172
passing yards and three
touchdowns and just one
interception.
East senior wide receivers
Jackson Ritter (5 receptions,
84 receiving yards, 2 receiving
TDs) and Matt Judd (4
receptions, 28 receiving
yards, receiving TD) were
the main beneficiaries of
Baltz’s big day.
East got another strong
effort from junior running
back Devon Williams, who
had 75 rushing yards and
three touchdowns on 19
carries. Griffins senior running
back Jordan Corbett
added 71 rushing yards on
10 carries, while sophomore
Jamal Johnson added
84 rushing yards on three
carries.
It was another complete
effort by the Griffins, despite
a game played in the low 20s
and with a lot of chippiness
from both sides much of the
game.
“Definitely the stakes are
high,” Baltz said of the chippy
nature of the game. “We
really wanted it. And everything
we do, if our guys
are getting hit at the end,
our guys are there to back
them up. That’s why it can
be a little chippy out there,
because our players want
to keep each other safe. It’s
good to know that we’ve got
guys out there that have your
back.”
Shelton saw that from the
defensive side, too.
“It was a different style of
play than what we get from
most teams,” Shelton said.
“The physicality was there.
They wanted it just as much
as we did, but we just came
out and played better on this
certain day. I think we wanted
it more in the end.”
Now, with the win, the
focus shifts to the Class 8A
semifinals. A trip to Champaign
for the 2018 Class 8A
state final is on the line.
“I’m looking forward to
just doing our job and trying
to get the W,” Wilson said.
The Griffins will play at
1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at
Loyola.

Griffins dominate Edvardsville, move on to semis
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The sequel was inevitable.
After their rousing Class
8A state final last year, the
Lincoln-Way East (12-0)
and Loyola (9-3) football
teams will meet again in
the playoffs after East dispatched
Edwardsville 50-14
Saturday, Nov. 10, in the
quarterfinals.
Loyola defeated Maine
South 17-0 in the quarterfinals
to advance.
“There’s nobody that we
respect more,” East coach
Rob Zvonar said of how his
team views the Ramblers.
“[Loyola coach] John [Holecek]
is the best at what he
does, and for us to have to
go up there on a Saturday
afternoon in Wilmette is as
tall of a task as this program
has had. I know our guys
will embrace the challenge
and work [their] tails off this
week, and whoever advances
from that one will have
deserved it.”
East quarterback Jack
Baltz also is looking forward
to the test against Loyola.
On the roster as the backup
quarterback for last year’s
state championship team,
Baltz is ready to leave his
own mark on the budding
rivalry.
“I’m just ready to get back
at it, get working [and] see
how they’ve changed over
the year,” Baltz said. “I’m
really excited, though, because
it is a rematch of the
state championship.
“We’ve got to get ourselves
better and keep
climbing, because we definitely
still have a lot of potential
in our game and a lot
of things we can work on —
especially that we learned
from this game — that we
can just keep getting better
at.”
East senior defensive lineman
Dylan Shelton, who
also was on the team last
year, believes the focus for
the Griffins needs to be inward.
“We just have to read our
keys, focus on what they are
doing, watch film,” he said.
“Honestly, if we do our jobs,
we should be OK.”
In order to set up LW
East-Loyola: Round 2, the
Griffins had to get by an
Edwardsville (8-4) team led
by senior quarterback and
Notre Dame recruit Kendall
Abdur-Rahman. He’s a player
that Zvonar spent a lot of
time game planning for during
the week.
Abdur-Rahman to former
Lincoln-Way East quarterback
Tommy Fuessel, in
that Abdur-Rahman is most
dangerous when he creates
plays on his own. “We
knew we had to take great
angles, and we had to get
a ton of guys to where he
was at. Overall, he had the
one big run for the touchdown
— and they had the
one big screen play — but
take out those two plays
and I thought our guys did
a pretty good job of doing
what they needed to do.”
Knights on to state, first sectional win in school history
LW East finishes
second; sends two
relay teams, three
individuals to state
Sean Hastings
Freelance Reporter
It came down to the final
event, and when Lincoln-
Way Central senior Cetta
Senese touched the wall at
3:36.81, the Knights had
finally captured their first
sectional title in school history
at Lincoln-Way East on
Saturday, Nov. 10.
Senese swam the final leg
of the 400-yard freestyle behind
Autumn Hufnagl, Sierra
Maze and Belle Dutka,
who opened the race.
The Knights won their
first sectional with a score
of 296, East came in second
with 292.
Central’s relay team was
able to finish just in front
of East, which finished at
3:40.18.
“Once I was done, it was
the best feeling ever,” Senese
said. “But, leading up
to that, I was so nervous,
there was so much pressure,
I knew it came down to that.
We already had the lead, so
I knew we had to hold it to
make it stronger.
“Just touching the wall
was the most amazing feeling
knowing that we did it
and we finished it and finished
out strong. It was really
fun. When I heard everyone
scream I knew [we
won it].”
Senese earned a trip to
state in all four of her events,
including 400 freestyle relay,
the 200 individual medley
(2:09.55), the 200-yard medley
relay (1:47.12) and the
100 breaststroke (1:06.44).
For Senese, this being her
senior season, things could
not be going better right
now.
“We’ve been working
hard all season for this, and
this was probably the best
possible outcome we could
have ever hoped for,” she
said. “As a senior, just to
finish it off just like this, it’s
perfect. All four years led
up to this, and I couldn’t be
happier.”
Besides the sectionalclinching
relay team, also
heading to state for the
Knights is the 200 medley
relay team of sophomore
Keara McGowan, Senese,
Josephine Moline and Madi
Jager and the 200 freestyle
team of Dutka, Sierra Maze,
Jager and McGowan.
McGowan is also going
to state for the 50 freestyle
(23.71) and the 100 freestyle
(52.27).
Her 50 free time of 23.71
seconds was good enough to
set a pool record at East.
“It’s amazing to know
that the hard work has paid
off, and it’s a great feeling
to know that we’ve been so
supportive of each other,”
McGowan said. “Our team
culture is amazing and we
all just love and support each
other so much, so to share
this is the best feeling ever.”
Also earning a state-qualifying
time was Jager in the
100-yard freestyle (52.88).
How excited was coach
Pat Shaughnessy? To kick off
the celebration, he jumped
into the water fully clothed
to celebrate the school’s first
sectional championship with
his team.
“We knew it was going
to be tough. Lincoln-Way
East dominated 10 out of
11 years,” he said. “They
dominated today and were
amazing, so for our girls to
fight all the way through and
not get down and inch away
at that lead [was awesome].
We were down [score-wise]
the entire meet.”
Divers Rebekkah Schimick
and Rachel Kachinsky
finished in fifth and sixth
with scores of 365.80 and
352.70, respectively.
Shaughnessy said the
Knights’ depth is what
helped win them the meet,
and that makes it that much
better.
“We prepare them for
that,” he said. “You want to
win the meet? You have to
win the race. That is what it
is coming down to. It’s one
chance.
The Knights celebrate in the pool after winning their first sectional title Saturday, Nov. 10.
Even coach Pat Shaughnessy dove in with them.. Laura Burt/22nd Century Media
Griffins still shine in second
place
Unfortunately for the
Griffins, they ended up on
the wrong side of the surging
Knights in the final race. But
what Shaughnessy complemented
about East is true, as
the Griffins are sending multiple
girls to state.
East is sending two relay
teams to state, along with
three individual swimmers.
The Griffins started the
meet strong winning the first
two events, including the
state-bound 200 medley relay
team (1:47.10) of Braelyn
Binkowski, Alicia Pearson,
Lexi DiSera and Tina
Winter. Late in the meet,
East’s 200 freestyle team of
Pearson, Binkowski, Jordan
Bruni and Winter also
claimed their spot.
Winter quickly re-energized
after the first event
as she put together another
state-bound time of 1:55.20
in the 200 freestyle.
Pearson also secured two
state-qualifying times in the
50 freestyle (24.16) and the
100 breaststroke (1:05.90).
Binkowski is also headed
to state on an individual
basis after she broke the
pool record in the butterfly
(55.88) and with a statequalifying
time in the 100
backstroke (57.52).
Emotions ran high with
Binkowski and the other
swimmers who secured
their ride to state, embracing
teammates and coaches with
hugs.
“This season has been one
of the hardest I’ve ever been
in and it has paid off,” she
said. “The spirit of the team
today, everyone was ready to
go and swam great.”
Binkowski qualified for
all the races she swam in and
called it incredible.
“It’s unbelievable [to
break a record],” Binkowski
said. “Ever since I’ve been
coming to East, even when
I was younger I said, ‘That
record is really fast, I hope
I can get it one day,’ and today
was that day. Now that
I have that record, it’s really
crazy.”
Sometimes the swimmers
for East were in the pool
before 5 a.m. and going
through coach Kate Gabey’s
grueling practices, but in the
end it is all paying off for
East.
Gabey and Binkowski
joked that they call Gabey
both the Devil and Mom
— a perfect coaching style
combo that has made this
team successful. Gabey even
wore blue devil ears at the
meet, but was overwhelmed
with smiles and gave those
motherly hugs to each swimmer.
“She really pushes us, but
she really is like a second
mom to us,” Binkowski said.
“We do call her the Devil,
we do call her Satan, but it
is an endearing term. She is
the reason why we swim so
well.”
It was, of course, tough
for Gabey and the rest of the
Griffins to see that lead slip
away in the final event, but
Gabey said it was a win in
their eyes.
“The swimmers swam out
of their minds and our divers
dove incredible,” she said.
“We didn’t have a bad race.
We were 100 percent best
times, our divers had the
highest scores they’ve ever
had. You can’t ask for more
than that.”
Gabey said there were a
lot of tears shed at the meet,
all happy ones.
“They set goals all day
long and they hit them all
day long. And to see that
and see them smile and see
them qualify for state, it’s
like they’re my own children,”
she said. “It’s so great
to see them accomplish
those things. We have a lot
of girls that are going to be
competing [at state] and you
couldn’t ask for more.”
Both of East’s divers finished
in second and third
place. Alyssa Rudsinski finished
in second with a diving
score of 388.15 and Reese
Parchem finished with a
score of 372.15.

Randy Whalen Freelance Reporter
A new season, a new coach for the
Lincoln-Way East girls basketball
team.
Or is that an old coach?
Jim Nair takes over as head coach
for the Griffins. But Nair is no
stranger to coaching, as he was the
head girls basketball coach at Lincoln-Way
North for the eight years
the school was open between 2008-
2016. He compiled a 164-65 record
there, winning 20 games or more the
last seven seasons, and won a schoolrecord
26-games and a regional title
in the last season.
Jim Martin was the previous coach
for all 17 seasons since East became
its own school in 2001-02. He had
an overall record of 341-153 at East
with 14 winning seasons and nine regional
championships. One of those
was last season when the Griffins
(28-5) set a school record for victories
in a season before falling to
Mother McAuley in a Class 4A sectional
title game.
“I have some big shoes to fill,”
Nair said. “Coach Martin laid the
foundation for that success and we
want to keep it going.”
The Griffins graduated four starters
from last season’s squad, which
finished 8-2 and in second place in
the Blue Division of the SouthWest
Suburban Conference. But the sophomore
team, which was coached by
Nair the last two years, finished 21-4
and won the SWSC Blue. Mix some
of those players with returners from
last season and the making of another
good season is there.
“That team from last season was
a great team,” Nair said. “We will
have a little inexperience, but we will
gain that through a lot of hard work.
I coached many of these girls at the
Lincoln-Way East senior Kaley Sheehan is expected to make big contributions this year after an impressive junior
season last year. 22nd Century Media file photo
sophomore level when I came over
from North two years ago. We will be
a very deep team, but lack varsity experience
and height.”
Three key returners will be senior
guards Kaley Sheehan and Sydney
Nekola, and senior point guard
Katchie Savic.
“Katchie has great vision and ball
handling,” Nair said. “Kaley is a natural
scorer, while Sydney is a great
defender and one of smartest players
we have ever coached.”
Some newcomers to watch for
include senior guard Libby Villa,
who was injured and missed last
year. Also, junior guards Lilly Genis,
Olivia Molnar and Destini Rose,
who is a transfer from Homewood-
Flossmoor, along with 6-foot 1-inch
junior post player Andie Perch,
who Nair said has great shooting
range.
East opened the season on Monday,
Nov. 12, with a tough game
at Maine South. Then, starting on
Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Griffins
headed to the RedHawk Thanksgiving
Tip-Off Classic for five
games.
