4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 14 November, 2018 College Street Closure unfair for Holy Cross College & businesses Dear Sir, TWT (November 7, 2018) announces that, by a unanimous vote of Council, College Street, Ryde will be permanently closed to through traffic. The main reason advanced is child safety, with one Councillor naming the risk thus: “keeping the street open would mean traffic would be twenty four hours a day, seven days a week’”. By this reasoning, Council might consider the blocking of through traffic in most of the busy streets in Ryde? Residents’ concern for child safety is very understandable. But surely such concern is felt by residents in nearly all streets in Sydney? Most Councils look to a balance between pedestrian safety and traffic convenience for locals. Commonly, streets perceived as being of high risk carry appropriate signage, have ramps installed, and have cameras in some instances. Additionally, proliferation of apartment blocks which disgorge additional traffic into the gridlock, is moderated. It is reasonable to assume that College Street gets its name because of its provision of access and exit traffic, to and from, Holy Cross College. The blockage of College Street has prevented this traffic access and exit for the past two years. The reason given two years ago was the purported development of an adjacent site by Bunnings, and a consequent need for changed traffic conditions. Is there not something wrong when a commercial conglomerate, years in advance of arrival, can seriously inconvenience patrons, - parents, students, staff, visitors, of an institution that has been providing education locally for the past 127 years? Additionally, Holy Cross College makes its facilities available for week-end seasonal sports – rugby league, football, cricket. All associated traffic must exit on to the generally congested Victoria Road, directly, or via Frank Street, where the lights permit a diminishing of the queue by only three or four vehicles at a time, in most instances. Similar disruption and frustration are the lot of the many business ventures on the College end of the blocked street as was voiced at the Council meeting. College Street, one of the wider suburban streets in Sydney, has approximately 20 residential dwellings. Not sure that the unanimous Council decision on this issue passes the pub test. Instead of supporting the extension for submissions, he voted it down. While 28 days is the legal minimum timeframe for public consultation, this is going to be the tallest residential tower in Sydney which requires us needing more time. The Mayor is also overdue on community consultation by six months and if he really wants everyone to make a submission then he should give us as much time as possible to do so. How can Council reasonably expect to canvass community opinion and enable as many as possible to make a submission if they don’t give enough time for the whole community to present their views? A few weeks ago I questioned whywest bound traffic could no longergo down Yerong Street but instead were funnelledpast Meadowbank Primary School via Thistle Street. The lack of response was deafening. Apparently this extra risk to our primary school children is of no concern to anyone but a silly old codger like me. Some time ago they started putting crosses on the road to alert we poor dumb schmucks to not park in front of driveways. Now I notice in this same area “No Stopping” signs are springing up everywhere like unattended dandelions . Young in Art exhibition uncovers more talent The Young in Art Exhibition drew very appreciative crowds on opening night and throughout the exhibition which encourages students from local schools to discover their creative side and brings the school communities together. With deep regret we report the passing of John Collins - affectionately known as JC to family and friends – last Wednesday November 7 at 80 years young. The family invites all who knew and loved John to join them to celebrate his eventful life today Wednesday November 14 from 12 noon in All Saints Church, 2 Ambrose Street, Hunters Hill. From almost that time John was asked by Council to become voluntary caretaker of the Woolwich baths. John and his wife Sue had three children. John ran the family textile business from 1973 that his father started in 1954. Deeply respected in the industry as a gentleman and expert in his field, the company grew and continues to trade strongly today with the fourth generation of the Collins family active in the business. JC as he was affectionately known joined the Chamber of Commerce in 1964. He served on countless committies through the years and became National President in 1987. In the late Eighties he was also a Director of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, and in 1992 became the Australian regional Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce John loved the Woolwich peninsula and its community. His children all attended Woolwich Public School. Not many knew that in the early Seventies, John purchased the Woolwich General Store, primarily to provide employment for a family friend. He sold it several years later. Alderman & Deputy Mayor John became an Alderman on Hunters Hill Council in 1992 and remained until 1996, and was Deputy Mayor in 1994, committing vast amounts of his time with integrity and insight. He also took great pride in his membership of the Hunters Hill Club, was active in the refurbishment of the club to it’s current design, and gave generously with his time as a Director and Chairman of the club from 2008-2012.
