Bill Birk’s love of coins
started approximately 70
years ago, when his great
grandmother shared some
Indian Head pennies.
“I still have those,” said
the 72-year-old Tinley Park
resident and president of the
Oak Forest Numismatic Society.
Earlier this month, Illinois
Numismatic Association
President Jim Paicz
honored Birk with the ILNA
Ralph Windquist Lifetime
Achievement Award, as
38 fellow members of the
Oak Forest coin club gathered
for a ceremony. Birk
described the experience
as “unexpected and humbling.”
“Bill has given back
with his heart,” Paicz said.
“Nobody has ever asked
him to. Watching him do
what he has done for 30
years, we felt it was the
right time.”
There are 36 local coin
clubs in the state as well as
the ILNA. Southland clubs
include Oak Forest, Hazel
Crest, and Joliet, though
members don’t have to reside
in those areas. They
just have to be interested in
currency.
Birk taught in various elementary
schools in Tinley
Park, Orland Park and Oak
Forest for decades, until he
retired in 2007. Nowadays
he still works with students
at Trinity Lutheran School
through its chess club and
gives education presentations
at his former schools
in Community Consolidated
School District 146 as
well as the Tinley Park Public
Library.
“I would use coins while
I taught,” Birk said. “The
Independent
candidate
running for
Tinley Park
trustee seat
Cody Mroczka, Editor
A political
newcomer unaffiliated
with
any party is
hoping to be
elected to one
of the three
Village of Tinley
Park trust-
Godlewski
ee positions in the next municipal
election this April.
Brian Godlewski officially
announced his candidacy
back on Sept. 16 through a
Facebook post on his page
at “Brian Godlewski – Tinley
Park.” A 14-year resident
of Tinley Park, Godlewski is
a real estate broker at Baird
& Wagner and also is a substitute
teacher. He cited a
15-year background in the
real estate industry including
commercial, residential, and
governmental experience in
urban planning and economic
development.
In his announcement,
Godlewski said he was an
independent candidate who
would not accept any campaign
donations. He is a
graduate of Loyola University
and the University of Illinois
at Chicago. Godlewski
resides in the village with his
wife, Dawn, their two children,
and two dogs.
The three trustee seats
up for election in April are
held by Michael Pannitto
and Brian Younker, both
elected in 2015, and John
Curran, appointed last June
to replace Michael Mangin
who resigned. The seat was
originally held by Jake Vandenberg
until he was elected
mayor in 2017.
New Tinley Park political party backs three trustee candidates
Cody Mroczka, Editor
A trio of Tinley Park residents
and first-time candidates
are being backed by
a new political party led by
two current elected officials
seeking to win the three open
trustee seats in the next municipal
election this April.
Village of Tinley Park
Trustee Michael Glotz and
Clerk Kristin Thirion officially
announced on Nov. 3
the formation of One Tinley
Park along with a slate of
trustee candidates in William
Brennen, Diane Galante, and
Michael Mueller.
Saving the animals, one print
As she looked out of her
office window at the Brookfield
Zoo, Frankfort resident
Sandi Dornhecker knew she
had to begin painting what
she saw.
For Dornhecker, who has
worked at the zoo for 26
years and serves as the facility’s
vice president of human
to convey her love for animals.
Her journey began with
a series of animal drawings
created with colored pencils.
“I’ve been doing my animal
art for about four years,”
Dornhecker said. “I have a
passion for animals — that is
the focus of my art. Some of
the artwork [is] from photos
While big cats are her favorite
Dornhecker regularly brings
a variety of species to life
through her artwork, including
giraffes and zebras.
“I have a large zebra I’m
working on right now,” she
said. “If you saw my office at
the zoo, it’s covered with giraffes,
including pictures and
Dornhecker said she hopes
her work brings exposure to
that she works with at the
Brookfield Zoo are on the endangered
species list.
“This is why I’m drawn
was a friend to anyone who
needed one.
In 1978, Zayed and her
family moved to Orland
Retired Andrew teacher missing since September found dead
Cody Mroczka, Editor
Dan Jarski, a 62-year-old
retired Victor J. Andrew High
School teacher reported missing
since September, was
found dead on Saturday, Nov.
10 in Kankakee River State
Park, according to the Will
County Coroner’s Office. Jarski
Jarski, of Grant Park, had
been reported missing since Sept. 9. He was
pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m. Saturday after
his body was found in Wesley Township
in the Will County portion of the state park,
From Nov. 14 From Nov. 16
approximately 40 miles south of Tinley Park
where Jarski taught science until 2016.
The coroner’s office said Jarski was identified
by dental records on Tuesday, Nov.
12. The cause and manner of death are still
under investigation by several law enforcement
agencies including the Illinois State
Police and the Illinois Conversation Police,
according to the coroner’s office press release.
Jarski’s relatives also confirmed the
news via the Find Dan Jarski Facebook
page.
“The family got final confirmation from
the Will County Coroners office,” a post
from Tuesday night said. “As a family, we
are empty. This has been such a long road
for us.”
Numerous search efforts were undertaken
in the last two months by law enforcement,
missing person organizations, and by family
and friends who most recently organized
a search party on Saturday. Jarski had been
last seen on Sept. 9 driving his red Chevy
City Express van traveling west near Interstate
57. His vehicle was located two days
later in a hunting area without signs of the
married father of three.
On Oct. 20 family, friends, and former students
gathered for a vigil of hope at Andrew
where Jarski was a teacher for 23 years.
A jury found a Tinley Park
man guilty of first-degree
murder on Thursday, Nov. 15
following criminal court proceedings,
Will County State’s
Attorney James Glasgow announced.
Bahaa Sam, 52, beat his Sam
wife to death with a weightlifting
bar on the morning of Dec. 19, 2012,
Most have likely seen or heard of the
devastation taking place as wildfires have
raged throughout the state of California this
month, including the recent Woolsey Fire
that ravaged Malibu.
What many may not know is that The Tinley
Junction publisher 22nd Century Media
also produces the Malibu Surfside News,
which has been reporting on the fires since
mandatory evacuations for Malibu went into
effect the morning of Friday, Nov. 9. Since
Glasgow said in a statement. Nermeen Sam
was found lying in the grass near a tree in
front of the Tinley Park residence with severe
trauma to the back of the head, according
to media reports from the time.
Sam’s three children testified against him
at trial as well as a witness who reported seeing
the defendant striking the victim. The
jury rejected claims by Sam’s defense team
that he was insane or mentally ill when the
crime was committed. A sentencing date has
not yet been scheduled, but Sam faces 20 to
then, as of press time, at least three people
are dead, one councilmember was hospitalized
and more than 1,100 structures were
destroyed in the Woolsey Fire.
said. “Thanks to a first-rate investigation
by Tinley Park police and skilled trial work
Threat against
student reported
at Tinley school
Cody Mroczka, Editor
The Tinley Park Police Department responded
to an incident at Central Middle
School on the morning of Friday, Nov. 16
in regards to a reported threat made by one
student to another, according to TPPD Chief
Matthew Walsh.
According to a letter sent by CMS Principal
Randy Fortin to parents and legal
guardians dated Nov. 16, the school’s administration
“became aware of a social
media (Snapchat) post that indicated cyber
bullying and threats against a student at
CMS.” Walsh said the Oak Forest Police
Department was handling the incident.
The threat was between two students and
there was no reference or intention toward
CMS or the student body as a whole, Walsh
said. Fortin’s note said students were held
in the main gym for five minutes while staff
was briefed and then released for the regular
day by 7:50 a.m.
“Steps have been taken to support the
students involved,” the note said. “I appreciate
our partnership with our students and
parents who brought this to our attention.
These actions have allowed us to proactively
ensure that CMS is safe.”
This was the second incident at CMS
this week involving a social media threat,
referenced in the note and confirmed by
Walsh. Walsh said that the threat was investigated
and found not credible. According
to a separate note from Fortin dated
Nov. 14, CMS’s administration was alerted
to a social media post late night Tuesday,
Nov. 13 regarding a potential threat. Walsh
said the incident was being handled internally
by the school.
“We will continue to deliver lessons on
cyber bullying and internet safety,” the note
on Nov. 16 stated. “Please help us by continuing
these conversations in your home
about the appropriate use of social media.
Please monitor your child’s social media accounts
and inform us of any concerns.”
Calls to the Oak Forest Police Department
and Central Middle School administration
were not immediately returned on
Friday afternoon. The school is located at
18146 South Oak Park Avenue and is a part
of Community Consolidated School District
146.

Some of my most played
songs are “Do you” by
and “Dynamo” by Puppet.
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
One thing people don’t
know about me is that I really
enjoy cooking.
Whom do you look up to and
why?
I look up to Indiana Massara
because she makes
everyone happy no matter
what, and that’s what everyone
wants.
What do you keep under
your bed?
I keep extra blankets under
my bed in case I get cold
in the middle of the night.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
My favorite teacher is
Mrs. Esposito because she is
nice, she helps through hard
questions, and we do fun activities
often.
What’s your favorite class
and why?
My favorite class is reading
because I love reading
different stories from a variety
of genres.
What’s one thing that stands
out about your school?
Something that stands out
about my school is recess
for all grades. Most middle
schools don’t have recess
and it’s always nice to get
fresh air in the middle of the
day.
What extracurricular(s) do
you wish your school had?
One extracurricular I wish
my school had is a cross
country team, or just a running
team in general.
What’s your morning
routine?
At 6:30 I wake up and go
eat. Then, I get my siblings
breakfast and get myself
ready. At 7:20, I start getting
all my school things together,
then head out the door.
If you could change one thing
about school what would it
be?
If I could change one thing
about my school it would be
longer recess/lunch time.
What’s your best memory
from school?
I can’t pick one favorite,
but one good memory is
the walk-a-thons we used to
have where everyone walked
a few blocks around the
school with their class while
students are yelling at cars to
honk at us. After there would
Giving thanks this holiday season
Cody Mroczka
cody@tinleyjunction.com
The winter holiday
season can be a joyful
time for some families
and a painful reminder
to others.
There is always a lot to
be thankful for, but the irreplaceable
loss of a family
member or a close friend
hits the hardest around this
time of year. Though we
understand that death, even
unexpected or unfair, is a
part of life, setting one less
chair and plate at the dinner
table never gets easier.
I’m reminded of all the
tragic stories of loss readers
of The Junction have read
this year and all the families
who are left to pick up
the pieces once their loved
ones are gone. This holiday
season, I encourage you to
share thanks with those you
care about.
Let your children, parents,
brothers and sisters,
and even friends know
how much they are valued
and appreciated. Too
often words are left unsaid,
grudges held too long, and
opportunities missed to
show affection for those
who mean the most.
Do it for those who no
longer can and wish they
still could. You never know
if the last holiday you spend
with someone will be the
last.
Letters to the Editor
Andrew’s NHS ceremony was
something special to watch
I have lived in Tinley Park
for close to 30 years and there
are many, many things that I
love about our Village and the
quality of life here. During
those 30 years I did not have
children that attended Victor
J. Andrew High School so
my knowledge of VJA was
pretty much limited to what
I heard from neighbors and
friends and what I read in
the paper. Well, all that has
changed.
I had an opportunity to attend
the induction ceremony
to the National Honor Society
on Wed., November 7th.
Over 80 juniors and a few
seniors were inducted that
night. The Principal, Robert
Nolting, gave a speech that
was empowering and motivating.
He stood and gave
each student a handshake
and a pat on the back. The
faculty and staff that spoke
that evening were unbelievably
proud and supportive
of each inductee. I would
be remiss not to mention the
performances of the Choir
. Their voices were powerful
and amazing. The Choir
Director was 100% in it for
his students. His passion was
evident. I was totally blown
away by the whole evening.
Never again will I grumble
about school real estate taxes.
The Principal and staff
are all behind an effort to
make their students excel
in all facets of their development.
It is evident
that they care and they are
passionate that the students
grow in academics, service,
leadership and character.
Thank you Principal Nolting
and all VJA staff for all you
do for your students. VJA
students: Keep Striving and
Keep Making us Proud.
Thank you for the memories
Thanksgiving has become
more special with each passing
year. I think back and
remember waking up to the
wonderful aromas of cooking
with my mother at the
stove with her lace apron on
and dad rushing out the door
for some last minute items.
A small Italian family, close
knit with grandma, aunts, uncles
and cousins all coming
over for dinner. All dressed
so nicely. Tables were set
stretching from the dining
room to the living room.
The kitchen table saved for
the deserts. Mom made it
seem so effortless. She loved
Thanksgiving because it al-
ways fell around her birthday.
We were all together
enjoying wonderful food and
a warm atmosphere. Now our
parents are gone and everyone
has scattered to the four
winds. It’s not the same, so
Pets, love and understanding highlight fall production
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Have you ever wished
that you could communicate
with your beloved cat, dog,
turtle or chicken?
Covered Bridge Kidz
Theater and the Tinley Park-
Park District examined the
“claws” and effect of this
paws-itively tempting concept
with a delightful production
of “Understanding
Your Pet with Dr. Marla
Brett.” The hilarious romp
was fun for the entire family
as the cast of six- to nineyear-olds
explored the relationship
between person and
pet during performances on
Nov. 17 and Nov. 18 at the
Tinley Park Performing Arts
Center.
Andrew Frodahl’s one-act
play begins at the office of
Dr. Lizzie Linkester, played
by Aubrey Brosius, as she
prepares for the arrival of
her mentor Dr. Marla Brett,
played by Caitlin Reiter,
who has developed a new
pill that allows people to
understand the thoughts of
their animals. A few unforeseen
side-effects emerge and
the doctors must help the
humans – including a senator,
chicken farmer and beekeeper
– who are now acting
like their pets.
Prior to the Nov. 16 dress
rehearsal, “Understanding
Your Pet with Dr. Marla
Brett” director Leslie Peternell
explained that humor is
at the heart of the production
and the actors themselves
had a hand in many of the on
and off stage decisions that
made the show a success.
“It’s just so fun,” said Peternell.
“They are amazing
kids and to watch them own
these characters is hilarious.
“They have made choices
that I would never have selected
for them, necessarily,
that really add dimension to
the roles. They all had a hand
in selecting their costumes.
“They all helped come up
with the design of the set.
There was a lot of creative
input from them and it was
awesome to see them stretch
their wings and really express
themselves.”
Nine-year-old Orland
Park resident Maddie Culver
drew from her own love
of dogs to portray Senator
Weatherbee’s animal-loving
assistant Riley.
“I like hanging out with all
the people and acting,” she
said of the production.
Producer Daniel DeWalt
enjoyed watching the cast
grow and become more confident
“from the beginning
to the cold read through to
them knowing their lines,
knowing their blocking, taking
some risks and developing
their character.”
He explained that being a
part of a collaboration like
the fall production has exponential
benefits for young
actors and actresses.
“It’s creative,” DeWalt
said. “It stimulates their
brains and their souls, develops
communication skills,
coping skills, self-confidence
and helps the kids to
learn social skills that they
might not get in other settings.
“They learn how it’s important
to be in an ensemble
as opposed to being the star
outside of the ensemble.
They learn how to make
the other person look great,
which makes them look
great. They get a lot out of
it.”
Up next in December,
Covered Bridge and the Tinley
Park-Park District will be
presenting their Children’s
Theater and Teen Theater
productions of “Young Sherlock”
and “It’s a Wonderful
Life,” respectfully. Tinley
Park resident Lily Grzeslo,
13, is looking forward to
taking the stage as Zuzu in
the teen play.
“I love that I get to express
my creativity in more ways
than I used to when I wasn’t
in the plays. I really like that
I can make new friends here.
It feels like this is my home
and it’s really fun,” said Grzeslo.
Performances of “Young
Sherlock” and “It’s A Wonderful
Life” will take place
at the Tinley Park Performing
Arts Center (16801 S.
80th Ave.) on Dec. 14 to
Dec. 16 and tickets will be
on sale to the public around
Dec. 10. More information
arts programming can be
International Fest
showcases diversity
of Tinley Park HS
Cody Mroczka, Editor
More than 15 cultures
were represented at Tinley
Park High School’s 2018 International
Fest held on Nov.
2.
Sponsored by the Seekers
Diversity Club, the annual
event started in 2005 highlights
the diverse student
body by offering a chance
for classmates to represent
their cultures through the
form of food and entertainment.
The nearly three-hour
event featured a potluckstyle
dinner with traditional
cuisine from Poland, India,
Haiti, Nigeria, and Philippines,
to name a few, but
also representations from
soul food and Cajun cultures.
Most of the proceeds
from the entry fees went to
worldwide humanitarian organizations.
“I really wanted it to represent
our entire student
body,” said Selime Baftiri-
Ballazhi, French teacher
and Seekers Diversity Club
sponsor. “We have over 15
countries represented.”
Following the community
style dinner, attendees
flocked to the gymnasium
to see students perform a
range of entertainment skits
including native dances,
songs, and spoken word
performances, all centered
around the message of unity.
Proceeds from the entry fees
went to worldwide humanitarian
organizations.
“That’s really been a message
well before the political
climate that currently exists,”
she said. “We wanted
to highlight as many cultures
as possible.”
The Dish
Kenootz Pizza celebrates 30 years this month
Thomas Czaja
Contributing Editor
Ken Keeler can still remember
the exact time and
date, as well as the order.
It was 5:01 p.m. Nov. 23,
1988. The first order was
a large pizza with sausage,
onion, green pepper and
mushrooms, delivered to a
man next door to his business,
which Keeler opened
that day and called Kenootz
Pizza.
Kenootz was the nickname
given to Keeler by his
grandmother as a child, and
his mother told him to use
that namesake for his pizzeria
for good luck.
The business started in
Oak Forest, doubled its size
and moved to Midlothian,
changing its address there
once before settling into its
permanent location in that
town. It opened its second
location in Homer Glen in
May 2017, which has several
tables inside but is more of a
carryout and delivery spot,
as opposed to its Midlothian
counterpart, which has more
seating.
Keeler and his wife, Dee,
went into business with
Homer Glen residents Kris
and Tom Boylan, who now
run the Homer Kenootz
location. Keeler met Kris
when she worked as a waitress
at a now-closed restaurant
in Midlothian.
“I wanted to open a pizza
place out here [in Homer
Glen], but I’m too busy
at the one in Midlothian,”
Keeler said of how he and
his wife became co-owners
with the Boylans. “I needed
a third person, and I knew
how Kris worked. I handpicked
her to run this place.”
With the business about
to celebrate 30 years, Keeler
reflected on the time that
has gone by and was candid
when he said he could not
have envisioned things turning
out as well as they have.
“[The pizza business] was
the only business I really
knew,” Keeler said. “I had
worked at pizza places and
figured I could do it myself.”
The theme of listening to
the customer has allowed
Kenootz to survive and
thrive, as Kris always is
willing to fulfill a request a
customer might have if she
has the right ingredients,
even if it is not on the menu.
And Kenootz goes beyond
making pizza, with Keeler
long having been passionate
about giving back.
“He helps everybody,”
Dee said.
Over the years, Keeler has
spoken at career days from
elementary to high schools
about making pizzas, as well
as donated countless pies
and time to the likes of fire
and police, sports and school
fundraisers, churches, seniors,
and more. The charitable
concept is shared by
Kris, who has brought that
same giving nature to the
Homer Glen store.
“Whenever someone calls,
The thin crust, 16-inch large pizza ($19.99 for cheese)
is shown at Kenootz Pizza in Homer Glen, here with a
sausage topping added. JACQUELYN SCHLABACH/22ND CENTURY
we try to do donate gift cards
or sponsor or figure it out,”
she said.
30th anniversary special
Keeler and Kris knew they
wanted to do something for
their customers to celebrate
30 years, so they decided to
create a special discount for
one day only as another form
of giving back.
On Sunday, Nov. 25, they
are planning an anniversary
special of $9.95 for a thin
crust, one-topping, 20-inch
pizza for pickup only at both
Kenootz locations.
“I personally just want
to thank everybody for 30
great years,” Keeler said. “It
means a lot.”
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Bailey Murphy
Bailey Murphy is a senior swimmer and
water polo player at Andrew who
qualified for the Illinois High School Association
state meet in the 50-yard freestyle
event.
How did you go from never
qualifying for state to being a
sectional champion?
When I was an underclassman, I was
never really serious, but at the end of the
sophomore season I realized I had the potential
to be better. Once the junior season
started I flipped a switch and worked very
hard to get better and my coach also helped
motivate me to be better.
What is it that most people don’t
know about competing in the 50
freestyle?
It is not forgiving. Everything you do in
that race has to be perfect, but you also cannot
think about what you need to do right
either. While I swim it, all I tell myself is
‘go faster.’ You must practice perfect, then
while you’re competing it’s muscle memory
from prior work.
Are there any embarrassing
moments you had in sports?
One time I was running late for my event
and I had flip-flops on. I started running to
the blocks but slipped and caught myself
on a table. As I was getting up I fell again.
It was funny, but embarrassing. I made the
event though.
Do you have a favorite pregame
pump-up song?
I usually listen to Oliver Tree before races,
his music really energizes me.
Is there something people don’t
know about you?
I know how to sign my name in sign language.
Is there a movie you could watch
over and over without getting bored
with it?
“Good Will Hunting”. It’s my favorite
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
movie and never gets old to me. I just love
the characters.
How about a TV show that you could
watch over and over?
I don’t really watch TV that much, but
my favorite show is “Rick and Morty.” I
just think the stuff that they do is insane and
hilarious.
If you could have dinner with anyone
— living or dead — who would it
be with? Why?
John Lennon. I love The Beatles and I
feel like he was such an insightful man.
If they made a movie about your
life, who should play you?
My friends have told me I look like
Shailene Woodley. so I guess her.
What would that movie be called?
“Murphy’s Law”.
‘No excuses’ - it’s time for
TP to start winning again
PHIL ARVIA, Freelance Reporter
D.J. Brown is entering his
12th season as Tinley Park’s
boys basketball coach. He
hasn’t had a winning season
since 2010-11.
But if you think the thrill
is gone for the Titans mentor,
think again.
“We’re excited about this
team,” Brown said. “This is
the biggest group of seniors
we’ve ever had — I’m carrying
10.
“We have senior leadership.
We have guards. We
have some guys who can go
inside.
“We don’t have excuses.”
Yet, Brown also conceded
of his senior-laden team,
“We’re pretty green.”
Graduated are last year’s
leading scorer (Josiah Bickhem,
14.4 points per game),
rebounder (Mark Cross, 6.6
rebounds), distributor (Jason
Cook 4.7 assists) and ball
hawk (Solomon Wilson-
Smith, 3.1 steals).
Off guard Christian Hooker
(6-foot-0) is the only returning
full-time starter.
He’ll be joined in a threeguard
lineup by Kameron
Holmes (5-10), an occasional
starter last year, and point
guard Mario Lawrence, who
has transferred back to Tinley
Park from Harlan after
starting for the Titans as a
sophomore.
The front court will be
occupied by two more seniors,
6-2 Adam Gaydos
and 6-3 Collin Wilma. Neither
played basketball last
season, but both played for
Tinley’s regional championship-winning
baseball team
as juniors. Wilma was an allconference
player in baseball
and golf.
“They’re really taken to
Tinley Park junior Yitonis Nash works the rope in a
preseason practice. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
what we’ve been teaching,”
Brown said. “For being off
their junior years, in terms
of picking up concepts, they
haven’t missed a beat.
“Their mentality will help
our guys. They understand
the best teams are player-led
teams.”
Count Hooker in that
group as well.
“He’s a four-year varsity
guy,” Brown said. “He
was our leading three-point
shooter last year. We’re expecting
big things from him.
“He has really established
himself as being the guy on
the team we look to as an extension
of the coaching staff
on the floor.”
With no players taller than
6-3, the Titans will look to
run on offense and press on
defense.
“We’ll do a lot of things that
benefit us in terms of having
moveable parts,” Brown said.
“Transition is going to be big.
… We are deep, so that helps
in being able to throw bodies
on the floor.”
Seniors Matt Joren and
Ryan Powers should see
heavy minutes coming
off the bench. Freshman
Aa’Reyon Munir-Jones,
who was bumped up to the
varsity football team midseason,
will likely take the
same path to varsity hoops.
“He has a lot of potential,”
Brown said. “He’ll start with
the sophomores, but I do see
him filling a role on the varsity
this season.”
Just 6-21 last season (4-9
in the South Suburban Blue),
Brown offered no hesitation
when discussing his hopes
for the season.
“To say we’re looking at a
.500 record is not too lofty,”
Brown said. “Essentially,
our goal is to be playing on
a Friday night for a regional
championship.”
His senior-heavy crew
should at least have a winning
mentality.
“We have guys that have
been around the program for
a while,” he said. “We took
some steps here to kind of
establish a culture, what our
expectations are, what we
tolerate. We were not going
to sacrifice culture in pursuit
of a couple of more wins.
“We’re seeing quality kids
coming through our program,
who we’re proud of.”
Murphy just misses goal in unforgiving 50 free race
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
As it has for many years, the 50-yard
freestyle continues to be unforgiving.
In an event in which an eye blink separated
the final 28 competitors, Andrew
senior Bailey Murphy finished 45th out
of 45 swimmers in the 50 free preliminaries
at the Illinois High School Association
Swimming and Diving Championships on
Friday, Nov. 16, at Evanston Township
High School.
Murphy swam the event in 25.24 seconds.
Had she shaved even one second off
that time, she could have finished 18th and
met her goal of :24.4, which was the Andrew
pool record of Christine Magnuson,
who went on to earn a silver medal in the
Olympics.
The Thunderbolts senior became the first
swimmer since 2013 to qualify for the state
meet when she posted a :24.90 at the Sandburg
Sectional on Nov 10.
Andrew will try to repeat
banner year with new cast
TIM YONKE, Freelance Reporter
Andrew boys basketball coach David
Wilson watched his top six players
from last year’s record-setting 19-9
Thunderbolts team walk out the door
after graduating last May.
Those six accounted for 98 percent
of the minutes played last season.
Among those players was Troy Murphy,
the SouthWest Suburban Conference
Red Player of the Year, along
with all-conference selections Evan
Yerkes and Dan Gierhahn, as Andrew
won only its second conference title
in school history and first since 1990
while coming within a game from winning
a regional championship.
So why is Wilson, now in his fifth
year as head coach, optimistic about
this season? After all, it’s not a case of
the glass being half full or half empty...
it’s totally empty, when it comes to returning
experience.
“It’s exciting because it will be a
challenge if there’s ever been one,”
Wilson said. “It’s exciting for the players
because it’s an open competition.
The optimism is there because who
doesn’t like a good challenge?”
Thanks to Wilson and his staff, Andrew
boys basketball has improved
gradually.
“We had some real, real lowlights a
few years ago,” said Wilson. “We’ve
just plugged along so we didn’t have
valleys like we did five, six, seven
years ago when we were only winning
four or five games a year. What’s been
going on the last two or three years is
we have freshmen winning, sophomores
are winning, eight graders are
winning so by the time they get to us in
their sophomore, junior and senior year
we’re more like a well-oiled machine
as opposed to reinventing the wheel.”
That machine will be put to the test
this season, particularly early.
“We won’t have it figured out by the
season’s start but hopefully we will by
the Christmas tournament at York,”
Wilson said. “By then maybe we’ll
have established our identity and get on
a roll and get some conference wins.”
Nivek Wilson (front) and Ryan Fitzgerald are two players from Andrew who are
on a team with high hopes of keeping the program strong despite losing a huge
chunk of production from a 19-win season in 2017-18.
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Some of the players expected to play
major minutes for the T-Bolts include
senior forward Zach Mattix, senior
guard Jeffrey Daniel, junior guards
Noah O’Connor and Nivek Wilson,
who played on last year’s 13-10 sophomore
team, and sophomore point guard
Jolo Amoranto.
Mattix, a 6-2 forward, is the only returning
player who saw some time on
the court a year ago.
“We turn to Zach for everything.
He’s the glue guy. He can play all
over.” Wilson said.
Amoranto takes over as floor general.
“I put him in that position because I
know he can handle it,” he said of talented
soph. “I’m excited to see him grow
into the position. How he’s playing now
is going to be an eyelash of where his
potential is at the end of the year.”
Others on the squad hoping to contribute
are seniors David Manguerra,
Isaiah Lasisi, Deyonce Taylor, Dan
Repa, Diar Berbatovci and Aidan
Strunka plus juniors Ameer Alexander,
Alex Rohrer, Ryan Fitzgerald and Michael
Bobber.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
First impression was Taylor-made
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Andrew junior Courtney
Maloney made her varsity
debut against Hillcrest on
Nov. 13 and led the Thunderbolts
with 23 points in a
66-52 victory in Tinley Park.
She had five 3-point baskets
in the win.
Nice debut.
“I was nervous, but I used
the nervousness to help me,”
she said.
Maloney also credited
trainer Kimrossi Taylor for
helping her mental game and
3-point shooting.
Andrew coach Bobby
Matz was impressed with
Maloney’s debut.
“I wasn’t surprised, but
you never know how kids
will react to varsity speed,”
he said. “Hillcrest is a fast
varsity team. She did a good
job against the pressure.”
Andrew opened the Lincoln-Way
Central Tournament
with a 40-32 loss to the
hosts on Friday, Nov. 16 as
Division I prospect Isis Fitch
had 13 points and 11 rebounds
and Maloney added
12 points on four 3-pointers.
The T-Bolts dropped a 54-
51 battle with Joliet West in
the third round on Saturday,
Nov. 17.
Good second impression
Tinley Park did not make
a great first impression in
coach Ryan Honan’s debut,
dropping a 63-32 decision
to Providence Catholic
in the Titans’ first game in
the Beecher Fall Classic on
Thursday, Nov. 15. Brooke
Davis led the squad with 11
points.
But 24 hours later, the
Titans did a complete turnaround,
knocking off Illiana
Christian 52-28. Kayla Serafini
led the team with 16
points while Davis had 12
and Emily Kleffman hauled
down 12 rebounds.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, the
Titans lost 60-52 in overtime
despite Endya Robinson’s
20 points.
Same score, different victim
TPHS had just five wins
last year, but one was a 52-
28 victory over Thornton
Fractional South on Dec.
13 to open the Oak Lawn
tournament. That’s the same
score as the Titans’ first victory
over Illiana this year.
Coming up
Andrew hosts Crete-
Monee on Monday, Nov. 26
and visits District 230 rival
Stagg Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Tinley Park has a rematch
with Illiana Christian, this
time at the Vikings’ new facility
in Dyer, Indiana, on
Tuesday, Nov. 27 and visits
Shepard on Thursday, Nov.
29.
Andrew’s Courtney Maloney made a good first impression
against Hillcrest. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA

FOOTBALL
LWE shocked in semis
JON DEPAOLIS, Freelance
Reporter
Lincoln-Way East hadn’t
lost a football game since
2016.
With a streak like that, it
was easy to understand the
raw emotion as the team
headed off the field Saturday,
Nov. 17, for the final
time in 2018 — one victory
short of a return trip to the
Class 8A state final.
The Griffins (12-1) fell
24-16 to Loyola Academy
(10-3) in Wilmette, as the
final play of the season was
an incomplete pass from the
Loyola 14-yard line to the
end zone as time expired.
“I just told them that when
you sign up for athletics —
and especially when you
sign up for Lincoln-Way
East football — that means
you’re going to put your
heart and soul into something,”
East coach Rob
Zvonar said after the game.
“That always sets you up for
heartache when it doesn’t go
your way. That’s part of athletics,
and that’s part of life.”
The Griffins accomplished
quite a bit in 2018. Aside
from setting school records
for regular season scoring
and defense, they also posted
seven shutouts and won
the SouthWest Suburban
Conference championship.
Quarterback Jack Baltz
credited his teammates for
continuing to fight.
“That’s the culture around
here — to never quit, even
until the last second,” Baltz
said. “We just came up a
little bit short this year.
This is family. These
guys, I would never change
a thing.”
SOME ITEMS ABOUT
ANDREW (ABOVE)
AND TPHS’S BOYS
BASKETBALL TEAMS
1. Crosstown battle
The last time these
two teams hooked
up, Andrew beat
Tinley Park, 70-46
on Dec. 19 at TPHS.
This year, they
play on Dec. 21 at
Andrew.
2. Home sweet home
Andrew has four
straighrt games at
home with Lockport,
Thornridge,
Stagg and Lincoln-
Way West at home
between Jan. 9 and
Jan. 18.
3. Nice finish
Although TPHS won
just six games, two
of those wins game
in a four-day stretch,
closing the regular
season with a victory
over Bremen
and opening the
postseason with a
regional victory over
Rich Central.
Here is a look at come
future college athletes
from the area, a
collegian who just wrapped
up a huge volleyball career
and a former college star
who was named to his
school’s hall of fame.
The future
Andrew hosted a ceremony
honoring its early college
signees on Wednesday, Nov.
14.
Girls soccer players
Megan Nemec (Loyola)
and Irina Clausius (University
of Illinois Springfield)
signed on to their respective
schools. Both had a
hand in the T-Bolts historic
fourth-place finish in the
state in Class 3A in the
spring and are scheduled to
be back for another season.
Softball players Maggie
Bailey (St. Xavier), Kaitlin
Lynch (Grand Valley State)
and Bailie Hess (Wisconsin
Lutheran) were also honored
as was T-Bolts baseball
star Brendon Herrin
(Evansville).
Tinley Park High School
officials did not report any
signings but the Titans and
T-Bolts will no doubt have
a bunch coming Dec. 19,
Feb. 6 and April 17.
The present
You might say former
Andrew standout volleyball
player Alexi Pranckus
just wrapped up a “grand”
career, as she hit the 1,000-
kill and 1,000-dig mark for
Concord College, an NCAA
Division II school in West
Virginia.
She is the second player
in school history to hit four
figures in both categories
and just the sixth player
for the Mountain Lions
(great nickname!) to knock
down 1,000 kills. Only
seven other players had
1,000 digs in the program’s
history.
Pranckus picked up the
1,000th in her final college
set when she banged
it down in the third set of a
three-set loss to Charleston
on Nov. 3.
She finished her career
with 1,003 kills and 1,080
digs.
The past
OK, he’s no Phil Mickelson
(and he is not related to
him, either) but Tinley Park
native Andy Mickelson is
a pretty good golfer in his
own right.
The former Lincoln-Way
High School standout, who
Andrew athletes signed letters-of-intent at a ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 15. PHOTOS
SUBMITTED
played at Bradley University
from 1999-2003, will
be inducted into the Peoria
school’s hall-of-fame in
February.
Mickelson earned All-
Missouri Valley Conference
first-team honors in 2003
after breaking Hall-of-
Famer Tim Sweborg’s
37-year-old school record
for season scoring average
at 73.28. During his recordsetting
senior campaign,
Mickelson broke 80 in all
of his 32 rounds, highlighted
by a career-best 68 in
October, 2002, which was
the best round by a Brave
in 18 years. He ended his
career with five career
rounds below 70 and at
the time of his graduation,
no other Bradley player
could boast more than three
sub-70 rounds. Mickelson’s
75.16 career stroke average
stood for 12 years after
breaking Sweborg’s 75.5
average set from 1963-66.
Following his graduation,
Mickelson played professionally
for two years and
he also qualified for the
2007 U.S. Amateur.
He is currently the director
of golf at Mistwood
Country Club in Romeoville
and lives in Lockport.
Mickelson also won the
2015 National Car Rental
PGA Assistant Championship
and the 2016 Taylor-
Made National Championship
at Pebble Beach and
Spyglass Hill.
Alexi Pranckus had more
than 1,000 career kills
and 1,000 career digs for
Concord College.
