gap
From Page 19
experiences also helped her enjoy
and value what she learned
from the culture and many people
she met and lived with in Latin
America.
“I returned home with a more
open mind about the people and
what was important to them,”
Chevalier said. “I learned about
the danger of stereotypes. They
are not necessarily wrong stories
about a different culture, rather
incomplete ones.”
Chevalier was born in Paris,
France, and lived in a small town
outside the city until she was
about 5 years old.
“Some of my earliest memories
are of living there,” she
said. “When I came to the United
States to live, it was culture
shock and not just whether fork
tines should be faced up or down
when setting the table.”
She listed some differences.
“At mealtime, adults are
served first,” Chevalier said.
“Here it is children first. Children
abroad seem to be more
respectful. Sports teams are
separate from schools. Many
people outside the U.S. tend
to view Americans as having a
‘consumptive’ attitude. People
must have more things — more
clothes, more everything. People
stand in long lines to get
the latest iPhone when they
already have a good or newer
model.”
Chevalier and her family lived
in Chicago before moving to the
North Shore.
She attended Chicago’s
French school when they first
arrived. By third grade she was
living in Wilmette and went to
Central School.
“It was difficult for me because
I could speak English but
not write it,” Chevalier said. “I
had a hard time understanding
why my peers used the word
‘like’ so often in their speech.
“My mother helped me
through it all.”
She attended Highcrest Middle
School, which she credits for
helping her learn Spanish. Wilmette
Junior High School was
where she spent seventh grade
but she attended St. Francis
Xavier for eighth.
“I now think these experiences
of the different schools enabled
me to adapt to new places and
meet people more easily,” she
said. “The culture in Panama and
Nicaragua is a different way of
life. School is prioritized. Students
wear uniforms to show a
sense of equality. People watch
out for each other and not just
those with whom they are living.
Family and friends do not fall by
the wayside.”
Chevalier said she keeps in
touch with those she met in Panama
and Nicaragua. She plans return
visits once she finishes college
at the University of British
Columbia, where she is studying
environmental sustainability and
international relations.
“These people in Panama and
Nicaragua taught me what really
is important in life,” she said.
