Cape Ann Botanicals Bringing Hemp The Pink House Getting Some Love
Products to Newburyport
REGIONAL – Spencer Kalker,
who opened Cape Ann Botanicals
in Ipswich last summer, is so
pleased with how the North Shore
community has embraced his
shop, which sells hemp-derived
products, he is opening a second
store in Newburyport.
“We are lucky to have a
community that is open to us,”
Kalker said. That community
includes a number of customers
from the greater Newburyport
area.
Kalker, who is working with the
city to secure a building permit,
expects the shop to open in a few
weeks.
On Pleasant Street across
from the Unitarian Universalist
Church, it will sell almost 100
varieties of hemp-derived creams,
oils, edibles and vapes.
More importantly, Cape Ann
Botanicals is a center for education
and information. Its experienced
staff and medical personnel dish
out remedies for ailments from pain and sleeplessness to epilepsy and anxiety. Some of
the creams Cape Ann sells are designed to help improve skin.
Carla Villa, manager of the Ipswich shop, said, “We are trying to change the culture.
There is 100 years of stigma to overcome.”
Cape Ann Botanicals is not a “pot shop,” Kalker said.
None of the products sold at Cape Ann Botanicals will get you addicted or high. Its
products have less than .03 percent per deciliter of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the
psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.
Cape Ann Botanicals is not the only shop that has begun selling hemp-derived products
in Newburyport. Other shops sell the products, including the Natural Dog near the Rte.
1 Rotary, which has had a run on a hemp-based honey, suitable for dogs and people.
And two doors from the new Cape Ann Botanicals shop on Pleasant Street, BC
Essentials has added a hemp-based oil to its variety of stress-relieving products.
When the Cape Ann Botanicals shop at 8 Central St. in Ipswich opened in June, the
staff expected most of the customers would be older people in pain and others who need
help sleeping.
Kalker and his team have made presentations at the Ipswich senior center and plan
to expand the outreach to seniors when it opens in Newburyport.
Plum Island Property Management painters at the Pink House
NEWBURY – If you drove passed the Pink House on Plum Island Turnpike
recently and saw painters working on the iconic house, it would be easy to get
excited that work was finally being done on the mysterious and popular structure.
But don’t get too excited. The whole house is not being repainted, as much as
it needs it. And no permanent solution has been found -- yet. A citizens group,
Support the Pink House (STPH), is working, along with a host of government
officials and non-profit organizations, to find one.
“No, we are not allowed to paint the whole house,” wrote STPH Chair Rochelle
Joseph in her blog at SupportthePinkHouse.com. “It is federally owned and not
ours to do.”
The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, which bought the Pink House in
2011, agreed to the request from the Support the Pink House citizens group to
winterize it, including painting the porch skirting and door and window frames.
“The Pink House is getting some love today, thanks to the OK by the Refuge
to Support The Pink House’s requests,” Joseph wrote. “MANY thanks go to Bill
Peterson, Refuge Manager, STPH Board Advisor Bill Barrett and his crew from Plum
Island Property Management for doing the work, and to STPH Board Advisor Greg
Jardis and his company Amesbury Industrial Supply for donating the paint!!”
The Pink House, built in 1922, appears more often in photographs and on
canvas than almost any other structure in New England. It had a small part last
spring in a television commercial by the New England Honda Dealers, and the Trip
Advisor web site just added the Pink House as a Place of Interest. Visit: http://bit.
Anna Jaques Hospital Receives Two Prestigious
Awards for Birth Center Efforts
Alison Sekelsky, MSN, RNC, Director of Maternal Child Health;
Tasha Gunnarsson, RN, IBCLC; and Hannah Pawlendzio, RN,
IBCLC, welcomed Baby Friendly-USA surveyors.
NEWBURYPORT - Baby-Friendly USA, a credentialing
program for hospitals that is part of an international
initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO)
and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),
announced that Anna Jaques Hospital has received the
prestigious international recognition as a Designated Baby-
Friendly birth facility. The initiative recognizes hospitals
and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for
families.
Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this
international award recognizes birth facilities that offer
families the education, skills, and support needed to get off
to the healthiest start and also to successfully initiate and
continue breastfeeding their babies.
Anna Jaques Hospital is one of only 14 hospitals in
Massachusetts and the first on the North Shore who has
successfully accomplished the honor of earning the Baby-
Friendly designation.
During the final assessment which was a rigorous
two-day survey, there were no deficiencies cited under
the Baby-Friendly model. Baby-Friendly surveyors
shared that Anna Jaques, “promotes an extraordinary
dedication to community health, wellness and passion to
serve all mothers and infants. Staff exhibits a respectful
and enthusiastic collaboration with community and
state agencies to promote evidence-based prenatal and
postpartum education and follow-up support for all
mothers and infants.”
In 2013, Anna Jaques began a rigorous evaluation of
internal policies and procedures on the path to become
a Baby Friendly-designated hospital. A multidisciplinary
team of nurses, midwives, lactation consultants, obstetricians, pediatricians and community members implemented changes
to foster compliance with the best practices for mothers and babies in the prenatal, delivery, and postpartum hospital stay.
These include:
•
•
•
•
Educating mothers prenatally on infant feeding and their hospital stay;
Encouraging skin-to-skin time immediately following delivery through the first feeding for both vaginal and cesarean
deliveries;
Initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth;
Encouraging rooming in (mother and baby staying together 24/7) by ensuring hospital procedures do not routinely
separate mother and baby;
• Discouraging pacifier use until the mother’s milk supply is well established
except for medical indications;
• Offering the option of human donor breast milk for babies requiring
supplementation.
Clinicians received updated training to fully ensure the multifaceted care plan is
effectively followed throughout the entire pregnancy and hospital stay.
This initiative was championed by Alison Sekelsky, MSN, RNC, Director of
Maternal Child Health, and the Lactation Consultant team at Anna Jaques: Tasha
Gunnarsson, RN, IBCLC; Hannah Pawlendzio, RN, IBCLC; and Judy Fayre,
RN, IBCLC.
Anna Jaques is also a recent recipient of the 2018 Breastfeeding Achievement
Award from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Anna Jaques is one
of 14 birth hospitals that were recognized for implementing “Quiet Hours” within
maternity units to allow mothers and newborns to rest, bond, practice skin-toskin,
and support feeding on demand, and breastfeeding.
“These recognitions exemplify our focus on fostering the most supportive
environment possible for each family, while providing them with exceptional care
and a personalized experience that honors their individual needs,” shares Alison
Sekelsky, MSN, RNC, Director of Maternal Child Health.
CORRECTIONS
In the November 7th article "Powerlifting to Defeat
Addiction" The John Ashford Link House was spelled
incorrectly. This is a long time organization with Houses
in Newburyport Amesbury , Salisbury.
Also in the recent Town Common article about trash collection
in Newburyport, there is a statement that could
cause confusion. It was stated that “residents currently
pay a flat rate for trash collection as part of their water/
sewer bills” which is not accurate. It would be more
accurately stated that Trash is paid through taxes which
go to the general fund. Thank you for the overall communications
that the City of Newburyport is addressing
managing its future waste streams - from Solid Waste
to Recycling to Composting Organic Waste - in a very
thoughtful manner given the dramatic changes at a global
and national level.
Our apologies for these errors.

Standing alone against the great
marsh, the unoccupied house
has captured the imagination
of generations of residents and
visitors. A STPH Facebook post
about the repairs last week was
shared close to 300 times!
For an icon with so many
fans, its future, however, is at
present uncertain. Joseph and
the Steering Committee have
worked closely with the refuge
since 2015, looking for a longterm
solution for the Pink
House.
Newbury town officials, state
Sens. Kathleen O’Connor Ives,
D-Newburyport, Bruce Tarr,
R-Gloucester, U.S. Rep. Seth
Moulton, D-Salem, and both
U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren
and Ed Markey’s offices have
responded to requests from
the ever-widening community,
joining with STPH to find an
appropriate owner so the house
can be fully revitalized.
The challenge is that the
refuge is part of the U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service, which in turn
is part of the U.S. Department
of the Interior. The Fish &
Wildlife Service normally does
“The seniors are very interested,”
he said.
But to the staff’s surprise, a
number of their customers has
been parents of teenagers looking
for a non-addictive product to
reduce anxieties. These products
are a positive alternative to many
of the drugs being prescribed,
Kalker said.
“You could say we are the antidrug
shop,” he said.
The Ipswich shop has also
attracted doctors, who come
looking for answers for their
patients. “We reach out to local
doctors,” Kalker said. “But they
have also reached in to us.”
The staff, led by Kalker’s brother
Kurt, a 25-year licensed pediatric
nurse, consults with customers’
physicians to make sure the
hemp-derived products do not
react with prescriptions.
Kurt regularly attends and is
often invited as an expert speaker
at conferences, including one
at Harvard University Medical
Center and two weeks ago at
an international conference in
California.
The Newburyport shop,
Spencer said, will look much
like the Ipswich shop, which
have kept the Pink House
standing to allow the time to
explore solutions. They have
complied with STPH’s requests
to protect the house against the
elements and animals, but do
not have any reason to invest in
further refurbishment.
And the Interior Department
is facing its own reduced budget,
which adds to the situation.
Because the house is owned
by the federal government, local
volunteers cannot repaint it,
Joseph said.
What STPH is working
toward is a new owner, who can
make a total external makeover
with new (pink) siding, she
said.
Several times a year, STPH
asks the refuge for repairs to
keep the house secure through
winter months and particularly
during the Nor’Easters that hit
Plum Island hard.
Joseph wrote, “As part of her
of the house (most of
which is actually an external,
but enclosed porch) be replaced
Questions are free, but if more
a 20-minute information session
for $29.99, an hour for $99 and
a three-month therapy course for
$299.
Spencer, who describes himself
as a “serial entrepreneur,” is also
building two medical marijuana
dispensaries, one in Ipswich and
another in Rowley.
Besides seeing a business
opportunity, Spencer and Kurt
have personal reasons for wanting
to offer people hemp products.
They lost their mother and oldest
brother to cancer, and Spencer
watched three friends suffer and
die from cancer and diabetesrelated
illnesses. Spencer himself
injured a nerve in his right arm,
which causes numbness. And Kurt
had two motorcycle accidents and
13 orthopedic surgeries, which
left him in pain that synthetic
pain killers do not relieve.
Hemp-derived products help
reduce both brothers’ pain, and
they believe hemp could have
helped their brother, mother and
or repaired and painted.”
The group asked and the
refugee agreed that the front
porch needed maintenance.
“We hope this will spruce her up
a little - and that big vine that
in 2017 we requested be cut at
the base (to die rather than rip it
off her clapboard) is dry enough
to come off without doing
damage,” Joseph wrote.
“The thing that frustrates me is
that so many people have suffered
all these years,” Spencer said last
summer.
Cannabis has been around for
at least 5,000 years. It fell out of
favor in the U.S. because hemp
competed with paper made from
trees. Since 1937, until recently,
such products were illegal.
Hemp ropes also competed
with a new synthetic product,
polyester.
When the federal government
began to tax and ban hemp
products, doctors complained
that it helped patients with pain.
But then aspirin was invented,
Spencer said.
Today, it competes with some
pharmaceuticals, particularly
opioids.
While the Kalker brothers
readily concede that much more
research needs to be done on
hemp, Kurt said, “What I don’t see
is why any doctor would prescribe
opioids, which are killing people,
instead of cannabis, which has
never killed anyone.”
Spencer said, “This product is a
miracle worker.”
MICHAEL CASEY
The Amesbury Public Library
will feature Lowell poet Michael
Casey on Tuesday, November
27th at 6 PM. Casey grew up
and was educated in the public
schools of Lowell, Massachusetts.
He received a B.S. degree in
physics from University of
Massachusetts-Lowell, then the
Lowell Technological Institute.
Drafted that year of graduation,
he became a military policeman
in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri,
and later in Landing Zone
Bayonet, Vietnam with the
Americal Division. A journal of
his military experience became
his book Obscenities, published
in 1972 by the Yale University
Press. This first collection was
chosen by Stanley Kunitz for the
Yale Series of Younger Poets. These
days he writes about Lowell and
its suburbs. His book Millrat on
blue collar work in a textile mill
has been published by Adastra
Press. The Loom Press of Lowell,
Massachusetts published his new
and selected poetry collection,
There It Is in 2017. Casey is a
master of using the dialect of
ordinary people, the language of
the street, in his poems. His verses
are little stories illuminating the
oddities and absurdities of human
life. The Amesbury Public Library,
149 Main St. hosts a monthly
poetry series with an open mic.
Each month there is a featured
ROWLEY - 2nd Annual Friends of the Rowley Library Cookie Walk to be held Saturday December 8th, 2-4 PM, at the Rowley
Public Library, 141 Main St. Rowley MA With Holiday Music performed Live by Pianist/vocalist Nancy Day. Cookie Bakers
Needed! Sign up today (via email) for the 2nd annual Friends of the Library Cookie Walk that will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8th.
All varieties and types of cookies are needed: sugar cookies, decorated cookies, etc - or bake your family favorite. Many cookies are
needed to make the walk successful. Email Olivia MacDonald with any questions, olivialeonemacdonald@gmail.com. What is a
Cookie Walk? While many have experienced a Christmas Cookie Walk, others may not be sure what it is and how it works. This
is a fundraiser where we sell homemade cookies by the tin. We ask that our members and friends bake and donate batches of one
of their favorite Christmas cookie (about 3 dozen) to donate for the walk. The day of the cookie walk, we line tables up with large
platters of the donated cookies. Buyers choose a decorative tin and walk around the tables to choose the cookies they would like to
purchase. This is a great way to get a huge variety of holiday cookies without baking so many different kinds! All proceeds from the
sale are donated to fund programming at the Rowley Public Library! This event is only successful because of all our bakers (you!) who
spend the time to bake the cookies!!
ROWLEY - Rowley Book Club to meet Thursday December 6 at 6:30 p.m. Join the
Rowley Library Book Club for a discussion of The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a
Memoir by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich, a different kind of murder mystery. The
author believes she is anti-death penalty- until she starts her summer job at a law firm,
and starts to work on the case of Ricky Langley. As she delves into the complicated
truth of his story, she is forced to deal with her own family history, and the reality of
a legal system more colored by our own pasts than we’d like to believe. Pick up a copy
of the current book at the library, then join us on the first Thursday of each month at
I met Kathryn when I was doing fire safety inspections as a fire
inspector for a local fire department. I told my wife if we were to ever
sell our home, I knew who the realtor would be. Well, the time came
that we decided to sell our house and picking a realtor was not an
issue, we called Kathryn. She was easy to work with and brought
a wealth of experience to the table. She knew who needed to be
contacted and involved and kept us updated through emails and
phone calls. At the time of the closing she made a very stressful and
emotional event much easier to go through. We will definitely be
recommending Kathryn to our family and friends.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although your energy level
is high, be careful not to commit to too many projects at this
time. You’ll do better focusing on just a few tasks rather than
spreading yourself too thin.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your heart might be leading
you in one direction, but pay attention to your keen Bovine
intellect. I’m cautioning you to think things through before
making any commitments.
(c) 2018 King Features Syndicate, Inc. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your “serious” Twin has been
dominant in your life for quite a while. It’s time now to let that
“wilder” half take you out for some good times -- perhaps with someone very special.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Career aspects are high for Moon Children who make a good impression.
Show people not only what you can already do, but also how you can be more valuable to them in the
future.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Things start to brighten for the Lion’s
immediate financial future. But be careful to resist the urge to splurge.
You need to tuck something away to help you through another tight
period.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Having to do too many tasks
in too short a time could lower your mood to just above the grumbling
level. But if you handle things one at a time, you’ll get through it all
soon enough.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your usually carefully made
holiday plans could be subject to change later this month. Use this
week to prepare for that possibility by starting a Plan B just in case
you need it.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about joining
a colleague’s plan to solve a workplace problem. Investigate it
thoroughly. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a predicament with
other associates.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Slow down that
high-paced whirl you’ve been on. Spending quiet time alone or with
people you care for can be both physically and spiritually restorative.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Make suggestions, not
demands. You’ll be more successful in getting people to follow your
lead if you exercise quiet patience instead of strong persuasion to get
your ideas across.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You still need more facts
before you can make an informed career choice. One note of caution:
Be careful about whom you ask for that information; otherwise, you
could be misled.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changing situations through
the end of the week could lead to some challenging opportunities for
those perspicacious Pisceans who know how to make them work to
their advantage.
BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of being both daring and
cautious, traits that could make you a research scientist or maybe even
a rocket-ship designer.
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Xylitol is a sugar substitute
that possesses 40 percent fewer
calories than sugar and has been
shown to help decrease cavities
in teeth, among other things.
However, it is important to
know that xylitol, even in small
quantities, is very toxic to dogs.
The dental benefits of
xylitol have been known since
the 1970’s. Xylitol is not
metabolized by the decaycausing
bacteria Streptococcus
mutans (S. mutans), making
it nonacidogenic and thus
noncariogenic (not decay
causing). Studies have also
indicated xylitol decreases the
levels of S. mutans in both
plaque and saliva. As a result,
patients who use xylitol have
demonstrated a reduction in
decay.
Xylitol is slowly absorbed by
the human intestines; as a result,
it has minimal side effects on
humans. Some may experience
minor side effects, mainly
stomach upset, although this
generally occurs after ingesting
large amounts of xylitol (four
to five times the recommended
How many of us stick our old
more than 50 percent, according
to a recent survey. Some of
us have just thrown away old
If you’re in the market for a new
phone and plan to buy it from
the same company, chances are
you can get money back or store
credit toward the new phone.
If you plan to buy from a
different company and can’t
amount for cavity prevention).
There are studies that the body
can adapt to higher dosages of
xylitol and that symptoms can
subside as the body’s tolerance
increases.
While the dental community
embraces xylitol for its cavity
prevention, many people,
including dental professionals,
are unaware of its toxic potential
– not to humans, but to dogs.
While xylitol has little effect on
insulin production in humans,
dogs can experience a rapid
and severe increase in insulin
production after just a small
amount of xylitol ingestion.
A dog that ingests a xylitol
equivalent of three to four pieces
of gum is at risk for hepatic
(liver) failure and necrosis (tissue
death).
Dogs tend to be scavengers by
nature and their likelihood of
encountering potentially toxic
substances in and around the
house is common. The ASPCA
web site lists a multitude of
substances, many of which
are harmless to humans but
potentially dangerous to dogs.
Chocolate, grapes, raisins,
avocado, onion, and citrus
fruits make the list. However,
xylitol is unique in that it is
contained within foods; as a
result, consumers may not even
be aware that a product or food
item contains xylitol.
trade it in for a new phone, there
are still ways to recoup some
dollars from your old phone.
For example, you can sell your
phone on eBay. The minute new
phones come out, those eager to
save money know to look for a
recent previous generation of
phone. EBay has made it easy
for you with a selling kit. They’ll
even send you the box to put it
in for mailing.
Check online prices offered on
places like Gazelle, Swappa or
Glyde. Read the details carefully.
Craiglist will allow you to sell
your phone in-person in your
area. (Don’t fall for scammers
who want you to mail them the
phone in exchange for a check.)
Toxic for Dogs
For dogs suspected of ingesting
xylitol, early intervention is
paramount. Prompt medical
treatment for uncomplicated
xylitol-related hypoglycemia can
yield a good prognosis. Once
Xylitol has affected the liver, it
yields a much graver prognosis.
While veterinarians have been
aware of the potential danger of
Cash for Your Old Phone
Security can be a problem
if you leave data on your old
that contains information unique
