Giant Steps Gingerbread House 

Decorating fund raiser 

Dear Sir 

Hello, my name is Chami and my son attends Giant Steps, 

school for children with autism in Gladesville. 

Autism is a pervasive development disorder which affects social 

and communication skills and, to a greater or lesser degree, 

motor and language skills. 

We are very fortunate that our nine year old son is able to attend 

Giant Steps as it has made a huge difference to his progress 

and the quality of life of our entire family. 

Giant Steps is a registered charity and was founded to help 

educate children and families experiencing autism, to alleviate 

associated stress and to guide in the achievement of measurable 

results. 

Giant Steps charges no fees and parents contribute in whatever 

way they can. 

Government funding only covers part of Giant Steps’ running 

costs so the families of the children who attend Giant Steps 

need to raise around $3.85 million each year to keep Giant 

Steps operating. 

We are hosting a Gingerbread house decorating fundraiser to 

raise funds for the school and was hoping you would be able to 

put a notice in your local area newspaper promoting the event.

School reopening 

is welcomed 

Dear Sir, 

It is fantastic that Macquarie 

Boys High School is 

being reopened as a new 

co-ed K-12 school. 

A new school has been critically 

needed for a long time. 

This also benefits many 

students from the Marsden 

relocation. 

As a former student of 

Marsden I fully back and 

support the relocation of 

Marsden, however my initial 

concern, was that it would 

disadvantage families living 

in Rydalmere, Parramatta, Ermington, 

Dundas, Carlingford 

and Telopea as the closest 

public high school other than 

Marsden is Cumberland High, 

15km away from Marsden, 

leaving many students without 

adequate school accessibility. 

By moving to the education 

precinct this would make 

that trip even longer and 

more difficult for students in 

the Parramatta Council area. 

Thankfully that has now been 

rectified.

from the relocation simply 

because other Council’s do

support them.

Not illegal to 

seek refuge 

Dear Sir, 

Why am I not surprised to 

see a letter from Tony Ikonomou 

jumping on the band 

wagon with his dog-whistle.. 

He is appalled by the latest 

terrorist attack in Melbourne 

which is fair enough. 

However it didn’t take long 

for him to point the finger at 

“migrants, so-called asylum 

seekers and refugees from 

third world countries.” 

Mr Ikonomou forgets that 

aside from indigenous Australians 

we have all come here 

from other lands and that those 

who come and gain residency 

or citizenship do so legally. 

And it is not illegal to seek 

asylum and to migrate. This is 

a normal process and Australia 

rightly welcomes peoples from 

all over the world. 

Unfortunately Mr Ikonomou 

is incapable of considered 

thought, instead seeking to 

spread fear by exaggeration 

and a fostering of prejudice. 

Some facts might help him. 

Since 1972 there have been 

18 people killed in Australia in 

terror related events and 6 of 

those were the perpetrators 

themselves. 

In that same period 62 people 

have died as a result of 

shark attacks and more than 

14,000 have been murdered, 

usually by someone they know 

or are related to. 

So let’s get this all in proportion 

and stop blaming “those 

people”. 

If we spent more on mental 

health along with work opportunities 

for the young and disenfranchised 

then we’d create 

an even safer country than the 

one we already live in.

CONSIDERATION OF AN INCREASE TO RATES 

EXHIBITION OF COUNCIL’S INTEGRATED PLANNING DOCUMENTS 

INCLUDING THE LONG TERM FINANCIAL PLAN 

While Council continues to strive to increase the efficiency of its operations in 

order to remain financially viable and provide for effective maintenance and 

renewal of its community infrastructure, several external factors have led to costs 

increasing beyond Council’s control. 

Shortly, all ratepayers will receive a detailed brochure outlining Council’s proposed 

rate strategy which has been developed to maintain, further develop and enhance 

our community facilities. 

Council will be asking the community and property owners for feedback about 

the following three options: 

• Option 1: Rate peg increase 2.7% (statutory increase that all councils 

receive) 

• Option 2: Rate peg 2.7% + Community Facilities 4.04% SV (10 year 

period) 

• Option 3: Rate peg 2.7% + Community Facilities 4.04% SV (10yrs) + 

Operational 3% SV (permanent)

Public input in 

planning a farce 

Dear Sir, 

Why can’t the State Government 

win public support 

for its urban transformation 

projects? Why is there so 

much outrage about mining, 

logging and land clearing? 

The Government tends to 

dismiss objections as nimbyism 

or greenie obstructionism. 

This line is supported loudly 

by developer groups, mining 

lobbyists and others who 

benefit financially. 

But who pays attention to 

the ordinary people whose 

homes are demolished for 

major infrastructure projects, 

whose amenity is destroyed 

by high rise apartment towers, 

whose farms and villages are 

polluted by mines and logging?” 

Partly as a result of BPN’s 

constant campaign for improved 

community consultation, 

the government has 

mandated community participation 

in some aspects of 

the planning system and the 

Department of Planning and 

Environment is currently seeking 

feedback on its new Community 

Participation Plan. 

The problem is as much with 

what people cannot comment 

on as what they can. Community 

consultation has been 

removed on “complying development”. 

This means people 

have no right to object to 

development plans that range 

from the house next door that 

overshadows your solar system 

to the medium density 

manor house (small block of 

flats) that reduces your privacy. 

Not only are you denied the 

right to comment or negotiate, 

but you don’t have to be 

notified until the last minute 

before work begins. 

With big impact projects, 

like new mines or power stations, 

communities and environmental 

groups have had 

their right to lodge third-party 

merit appeals removed. Yet 

developers can still appeal 

decisions they do not agree 

with. 

All power is with the Government 

and the developers. 

The people are almost entirely 

left out. 

The Department’s Community 

Consultation Plan 

includes seminars and community 

events, advertising in 

social media as well as traditional 

outlets and targeted 

activities designed to broker 

a solution. All this is fine if the 

outcome is not determined 

before the consultation occurs. 

They’re never going to cancel 

a road project or halve 

the size of a new residential 

precinct because the people 

object. There might be some 

tinkering around the edges 

that they’ll trumpet loudly, but 

that’s it. 

The BPN has always had effective 

community participation 

at the heart of its mission. 

We are pleased that some 

of the things we have fought 

for are being introduced. The 

test for government now is to 

ensure that community participation 

is more than a boxticking 

exercise. 

Community voices must be 

heard and their views given 

genuine weight. The Department’s 

feedback must show 

that “consideration” means 

more than reading submissions 

or note taking at seminars. 

BPN argues that submissions 

should be published 

and the Department should 

give sound reasons as to why 

they accept or reject ideas 

proposed in the consultation 

process. There must be 

the option of real change in 

response to the public will. 

Communities are not afraid 

of change but they want to 

have some power and agency 

about how it happens. It’s 

time for government to show 

some trust in the judgement of 

the people.

street. So, there’s 

no experience to evaluate

How can we trust safety 

promises when neighbours 

have suffered radon gas 

build up in their home for 

years from neighbouring 

government land, which 

the government has ignored, 

while the EPA has 

proven powerless to protect 

their safety? 

Risks associated with 

radioactive material may 

be expected to attenuate 

over thousands of years. 

What are the operational 

safety arrangements for 

radon gas build up, which 

is being vented only metres 

from homes? 

And there’s also the question 

of maintenance, monitoring 

and rebuilding of the 

cell when the concrete decays? 

Experts have raised Intergenerational 

concerns – 

passing the problem to our 

children’s children and to 

future councils to resolve. 

Experts have also said 

the cost of encapsulation 

would likely exceed that of 

excavation and off-site disposal. 

A technically complex, 

sloping site and narrow 

street may potentially 

also result in water run-off 

problems. 

Experts also anticipate 

the likelihood of intense 

community opposition.

for radioactive waste 

across Australia, all awaiting 

completion of the National 

Radioactive Waste 

Facility. Surely one could 

be found for our material. 

Temporary storage would 

involve removal of all contamination 

off site for sorting 

and verification and 

then storage in ‘bulka’ 

bags in shipping containers. 

Temporary storage has 

fewer constraints in geology, 

water management and 

site selection than permanent 

storage.

media in March - specifically

route and not near densely 

populated areas.” 

Nelson Parade meets 

none of these criteria. 

Instead, Property NSW 

has told us the government 

has given then the 

criteria to find the solution 

with the least political pain 

- political criteria, not environmental 

criteria. 

This is the problem. 

Property NSW says it consulted 

with the community 

and sought residents’ 

feedback. 

In reality they used feedback 

from the few who 

agreed with them and offered 

no evidence they’d 

listened to the rest of us. 

We need to stand strong 

& demand total remediation, 

informed by environmental 

best practice, 

expert advice and policy 

and not be persuaded into 

accepting an inappropriate 

solution, proposed by politicians 

for non-scientific 

reasons – with ramifications 

that will be regretted 

long into the future.

and girls outraged by inadequate hygiene facilities in public toilets across the City of Ryde. 

Speaking at a City of 

Ryde council meeting 

earlier this month, she 

stressed the importance 

of adequate soap supplies 

and proper maintenance of 

sanitary dispenser bins in 

all council-operated public 

toilets. 

The alternative represented 

an unacceptable 

hygiene risk, she said. 

“We want to ensure that 

women can meet their basic 

sanitary needs and the 

fact that we do not have 

these (sanitary items) available 

means that women 

do not use our facilities, 

women who have struggled 

with this problem for 

far two long,” the recentlycrowned

“Since we were two 

years old we were taught 

to wash our hands when 

we leave the bathroom but 

that is impossible to do at 

many public toilets when 

there is no soap available.

Natalie Hissey also addressed 

councillors on the 

issue. 

“I’m also alarmed about 

the lack of soap and sanitary 

facilities and around 

70 per cent of these public 

amenities have no sanitary 

bins,” she said. 

“A large proportion 

of homeless women use

family gatherings although 

on our Christmas Day, 

which is on January 6th, is 

very much a religious day 

when we go to the Armenian 

Apostolic Church. 

“Our largest community 

celebration will be at Darling 

Harbour and we will 

dance traditional dances 

that go back, well, forever.” 

Santa Claus is not an Armenian 

tradition but there 

is an Armenian legend of a 

baboushka (grandmother) 

who brings gifts to wellbehaved 

children. 

The baboushka legend 

holds that she wanted to 

join the three wise men 

and present gifts to baby 

Jesus but unable to find 

them, she gave the gifts 

to children in Bethlehem 

instead. 

During the Soviet era, the 

Russians introduced the 

figure of Grandfather Frost 

to Armenia. 

City of Ryde Councillor 

Sarkis Yedelian OAM said 

the traditional Armenian 

fruit, the pomegranite, is 

a popular addition to the 

Christmas feast. 

“Many Armenians grow 

their own pomegranite’s in 

their backyards, right here 

in Ryde,” he said. 

“These are served in a 

bowl on the Christmas table 

but you can also celebrate 

Christmas drinking 

pomegranite nectar.” 

The week before Christmas, 

some Armenians 

abstain from eating meat. 

Instead they eat traditional 

braided bread, rice pilaf, 

figs, baklava, fresh vegetables 

and rice pudding. 

A popular dish called 

“anoushabour” is a Christmas 

pudding made from 

wheat, berries and apricots. 

On Christmas Eve, Armenians 

in Armenia eat a 

traditional fish dish called 

“ishkhanatsoog” (princely 

trout) which is often followed 

with a dessert called 

“rojik,” which features 

whole walnuts encased in 

grape jelly and hanging on 

a string. 

In the days after Christmas 

a traditional Armenian 

lamb and rice meal called a 

“poulgeur pilav” is served.

Eastwood Community News

There are two major Korean festivals in 

Sydney. May’s “Korean Day Festival” at 

Darling Harbour which is sponsored and 

organised by the Korean Government. 

The second and more important event 

is the “Korean Festival” in Eastwood 

which is a community festival organised 

by the Korean community under the leadership 

of the Korean Society of Sydney. 

Eastwood hosted Korean Festival on October 

27, 2018. 

It is a special event because it does not 

correspond to the Korean national festival. 

It is an event to celebrate the “living 

Korean culture” in Sydney. 

It is an occasion where Koreans from all 

different backgrounds gather in one place 

to celebrate their Korean ethnicity within 

big multicultural Australia. 

Korean Festival was first held 25 years 

ago in Campsie. 25 years ago most Korean 

migrants gathered in Campsie. Since 

then the Koreans have moved away from 

Campsie to other suburbs such as the 

City of Ryde which houses the most number 

of Korean Australian citizens in Australia. 

For the next four years, Eastwood will 

hold the Korean Festivals. 

It is an excellent opportunity for the 

Koreans to harmonise with the Australian 

and other ethnic communities. There 

were over 7000 visitors attending the Korean 

Festival and the numbers are growing 

each year. It is good to see such event 

in Eastwood, the heart of multiculturalism 

in the City of Ryde. 

Early skin cancer test 

can save your life! 

John is in his 40’s. He visited Eastwood Skin 

Cancer Clinic last week for a routine annual 

skin check. He was unable to find a local bulk 

billing skin cancer clinic. Specialist dermatologist 

had a long waiting list and it was costly. 

John did not have any 

skin cancers in the past 

and none that was running 

in his family. However, 

John did have a fair skin, 

blue eyes and light hair 

colour. He migrated to 

Australia from Northern 

Europe when he was 15. 

He does have a history of 

sunburns and he does and 

did enjoy sun exposure. 

John had a routine skin 

cancer check. His body 

was stripped down to his 

underpants. With the help 

of a hand held maggylamp 

- magnification glass 

with attached lightsource, 

Dr Kim visually scanned 

the skin all over. The 

doctor noticed a small 

freckle near John’s right 

eyebrow. John did notice 

that freckle and then he 

realised that the freckle 

used to be a tiny spot. But 

it was now 15mm wide. 

The spot was asymmetrical, 

borders were irregular, 

and instead of being 

one brown colour it had 

two distinct colours. It 

was flat. It was not itchy 

or had any symptoms. 

But it was definitely getting 

bigger. This freckle 

had a multiple suspicious 

feature. 

Doctor Kim suggested 

a biopsy. A single pinprick 

of local anaesthesia 

was given. 2mm 

skin was removed and 

sent for pathology test. 

The test came back as 

an early stage melanoma 

called Lentigo maligna. 

John was given a phone 

call. And he was sent to 

the melanoma unit for 

further treatment. This 

melanoma was diagnosed 

very early. And these early 

melanomas are curable.

MAYOR’S COMMUNITY MESSAGE 

It was great to join the community at Meadowbank Park on 

18 November for the Diwali Fusion Festival of Ryde 

City of Ryde reducing its carbon footprint 

While politicians at a federal level continue to drag their 

heels on tackling climate change, I can happily report that 

the City of Ryde is continuing to work hard to keep its carbon 

emissions in check. 

In 2017/18, Council’s total greenhouse emissions were 10.4% 

lower than emissions for the previous 12-month period. 

The decrease was largely due to lighting upgrades that 

included the installation of energy-efficient LEDs across a 

number of facilities. 

In addition, Council has been busy 

investing in renewable energy. 

Recently, the largest solar harvesting 

power station has been installed at 

the Ryde Aquatic and Leisure Centre 

(RALC). This project has seen the 

installation of 826 solar panels on the 

RALC’s roof, which will generate more 

than 300 kilowatts and save close to 

66 equivalent tonnes of greenhouse 

gas emissions each year. 

The new solar facility at the RALC 

follows the installation of a new solar 

power system at Eastwood Hall and a 

solar harvesting system has also been 

introduced at North Ryde Library. 

Stay tuned for more announcements in 

this space as the City of Ryde continues 

to reduce its carbon footprint. 

Last Mayor’s Morning Tea for 

2018 this Saturday 

As we approach the end of the year, 

I am hosting the last Mayor’s Morning 

Tea for 2018 this Saturday at 

Anzac Park in West Ryde. 

I have found all of the Mayor’s Morning 

Teas staged throughout the year to be 

an invaluable source of information 

and a great way to hear from residents 

about the issues that are impacting 

them. 

As usual there will be a jumping castle 

and face painting at Anzac Park to keep 

the kids entertained and a coffee van 

on location for the adults. 

See you all there. 

Eastwood Library reopens 

next week 

A special event will be held at 

Eastwood Library next week to 

celebrate its reopening. 

The library has been closed for 

two weeks to allow for scheduled 

maintenance and upgrade works to be 

undertaken. 

As part of the reopening, members 

of the community will be able to view 

the ‘Then and Now’ Exhibition which 

showcases images of Eastwood that 

date back to the early 1900s. 

The library’s new Digital Reading Table 

will also be available to use, providing 

access to thousands of international 

newspapers and magazines in a variety 

of languages. Morning tea will also be 

served. 

The celebration of the Eastwood Library 

reopening will take place from 10.00am 

– 11.30am on Wednesday, 5 December.

Hunters Hill threatens heritage protection of entire municipality 

HUNTERS HILL Council has threatened to 

consider listing its entire municipality as a 

heritage protection area unless the State 

Government gives ratepayers a street by 

street right to reject private certifiers. 

About three-quarters 

of the municipality has 

heritage protection 

but Gladesville, Boronia 

Park and streets 

around St Joey’s College 

are not heritage 

protected and ratepayers 

in these areas are 

furious about developers’ 

use of certifiers to 

approve new homes 

that faced rejection by 

the Council under previous 

planning laws. 

Monday night’s council 

meeting saw councillors 

vote by 5 - 2 

to issue the heritage 

ultimatum to Planning 

Minister and Lane 

Cove MP Anthony 

Roberts. 

Council is warning 

that unless ratepayers 

are given the option to 

suspend the powers of 

private certifiers in affected 

areas by March 

1, it will act. 

Debate on the issue 

arose from ratepayer 

concerns that a private 

certifier had approved 

a two-storey home 

at 18 Milling Street, 

near the college, without 

an opportunity for 

neighbours to object 

on privacy or heritage 

grounds. 

Councillor Jim 

Sanderson proposed 

the ultimatum and accused 

the government 

of using private certifier 

approvals to silence 

objecting neighbours. 

“The compliant development 

process has 

the power to undermine 

all our controls .. 

clearly, individuals are 

not having any luck 

fighting certifiers,” he 

said. 

Councillor Ross Williams 

agreed, saying 

“private certifier compliance 

approval has 

taken planning powers 

away from the council 

and the community 

and put them into the 

hands of developers.” 

Liberal Clr Zac Miles 

and Deputy Mayor 

Ben Collins (Lib) voted 

against the motion. 

“The Department of 

Planning is simply not 

going to issue a random 

ban (on private 

certifiers) it is just not 

going to happen,” Clr 

Miles said. 

Like Clr Miles, his 

colleague Clr Collins 

supported an alternative 

motion to seek 

Mr Robert’s support 

to reform private certifier 

approvals in streets 

with low density homes 

and heritage properties. 

They made the point 

that Clr Sanderson’s 

motion was too late to 

help Milling Street residents 

and supporters 

like Matt Fehon, who 

argued the approved 

height of the 18 Milling 

Street home impacted 

privacy. 

“This structure now 

towers and looks into 

our yards,” he said. 

“There are young

Mayor Collins said. 

Hunters Hill Council 

has previously attempted 

to apply heritage 

protection to the 

whole of the municipality 

but on each occasion 

has been thwarted 

by governments.

PUTNEY BOWLING CLUB could receive a helping hand from City of Ryde gardeners 

funded by a grant from Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts. 

Council staff will meet with 

club officials to discuss options 

for a grant funded clean up 

and beautification of the club’s 

grounds after a request was 

made to last Tuesday night’s 

council meeting from club stalwarts 

Ron Ryan and Dorian 

Guardala. 

“The beautification work we 

need is beyond the best efforts 

of our volunteers,” Mr Ryan 

said.

them to get out there with a 

whipper snipper.” 

Questions asked by Clr Dr 

Peter Kim (Labor) revealed that 

the club’s lease does, in fact, 

require the club to upkeep the 

grounds. 

“Are we asking ratepayers 

to (spend money) to beautify 

a bowling club, a private business, 

a leasee ?” 

‘‘We could open a floodgate by 

doing this.” 

Liberal Chris Moujalli took up 

the point. 

“If someone has agreed in a 

lease to maintain the upkeep 

they should keep the agreement 

and the points made by Clr Kim 

are entirely correct,” he said. 

“But I would be happy for our 

staff to assist, with funding.”

On an extremely windy and turbulent day, eight courageous North Ryde 

RSL women bowlers played the Final of the Club Fours championship. 

Despite the horrid weather at end 21 the score was 15 all so another end 

had to be played. The final winners 16/15 were Beryl McClintock, June 

Bax, Pat Saunders and Elaine Marsden (skip) against Lorna Humphreys, 

Shirley Leabeater, Slavica Beram and Ivy Hitchens( skip). This was the 

final Championship for the club for 2018. 

Belle Property’s Michael Gallina, drawing the Gladesville Sporties jackpot triples last Wednesday. 

Two teams just missed out. The money jackpots again next week. President Vic Tagg annouced 

‘night bowls under lights’ starts at Sporties, November 27, continues every Tuesday night before 

Christmas. It is a pairs competition. Teams called at 6.45 pm game starts at 7.pm. Games are 

15 ends. Men and women welcome to come along and enjoy the Sporties atmosphere. Contact

of November 22, the members of North Ryde RSL WBC were thrilled 

when Ivy HItchens, was placed among only three finalists across NSW in 

the category of Club Official of the Year at the Night of Champions event 

held at Bankstown Sports Club. Our four photographic subjects attended 

the evening to support Ivy in this fabulous achievement. It was an exciting 

evening and wonderful to be part of a 240 person celebration of the 

game of bowls. 

North Ryde RSL Triples Champs: Peter Lavery, Andrew Woods, Steve Palmer downed 30-10 by 

new North RSL BC Champions Tom Pisano, Terry Sweeney and Marshal Collie. Steve’s team was 

assembled at the very last minute before and they did well to make the finals but a fairy tale ending 

alluded them.

SYDNEY FC is looking to lift its game in front of goal after its recent 

slim pickings in the goal-scoring department during the early stages of its 

2018/19 A-League campaign. 

Coach Steve Corica is on 

the lookout for a speedy 

striker that can make a habit 

of finding the back of the 

net - preferably on board 

with the Sky Blues in times 

for the start of his side’s 

Asian Champions League 

campaign. 

Sydney FC’s early unbeaten 

run came to a grinding 

halt on the weekend when 

its “Mexican” rivals Melbourne 

Victory, took out the 

first ‘Big Blue’ of the season 

2-1. 

On a positive note - a 

sell-out bumper crowd of 

19,081 got acquainted with 

temporary home ground, 

Jubilee Stadium in Kogarah. 

While the Sky Blues are 

pulling their weight in possession, 

Corica conceded 

his side needed to threaten 

its opponents in attack 

much more, revealing he’s 

in the hunt for another goal 

poacher. 

“We would’ve like to have 

threatened more. I think we 

threatened a lot more than 

what they did. The scoreline 

doesn’t show that,” Corica 

said. 

And while the A-League’s 

title heavyweight still boasts 

a goal difference that ranks 

it among the top handful of 

sides in this season’s competition, 

Corica has kept a 

keen eye on adding to his 

strike force. 

The club hasn’t yet signed 

a replacement for Trent Buhagiar,

fell victim to an ACL injury 

on the eve of round one. 

Buhagiar led the team’s 

goalscoring tally during the 

FFA Cup, while star import 

Siem de Jong has also had 

to settle for an extended 

stint on the sideline due to 

a hamstring injuryalso remains 

sidelined with a hamstring 

injury. 

“We’ve got a little bit of 

time before January, but 

we’ve already started looking 

and there’s a few options 

at the moment,” Corica 

said. 

“Buhagiar… was a big 

threat with his pace. If we 

can find someone like that, 

that’d be great,” Corica 

said, refusing to make excuses 

for his team’s second 

straight loss to their arch 

rivals. 

And he insisted Jop Van 

Der Linden would learn 

from the “brainsnap” that 

resulted in the penalty that 

ultimately eventual gamewinner. 

The pressure will be on 

the Sky Blues to get back 

into winning mode when it 

travels up the F3 for Saturday’s 

away clash with 

bottom-of-the-table Central 

Coast Mariners.
