Payea, Paya Celebrated at ACT Banquet of Champions
Colchester’s Scott Payea and car owner Rick Paya, along
with the rest of the RPM Motorsports team, were officially
crowned the 2018 American-Canadian Tour (ACT) champions
on Saturday, November 18. The 2018 ACT Banquet of
Champions, held at the Capital Plaza in Montpelier, VT, celebrated
all the top performers from the 27th season of competition
for the ACT Late Model Tour.
Payea was recognized for winning his second straight ACT
driver’s championship. The Northeast racing veteran finished
in the top-10 in every event on the 10-race schedule and completed
every lap. He also collected two wins, bringing his
career total to 15. In beating out Rowley, MA’s Eddie
MacDonald by 35 points, he became the fourth driver in Tour
history to win back-to-back titles.
For Paya and RPM Motorsports, it was their 10th owner’s
championship with ACT, the most of any team. They previously
won five championships with Jean-Paul Cyr and three
with Brian Hoar before joining forces with Payea prior to the
2016 season. The pairing has finished 2nd, 1st, and 1st in
points in their three seasons together.
Payea also acknowledged his fellow competitors for their
fine seasons and thanked ACT owners Cris Michaud and Pat
Malone, along with the series staff, for successfully handling
a transition year and carrying on the ACT name.
Many of the other top point drivers and owners were also
in attendance to officially put a wrap on the 2018 season.
MacDonald was honored for finishing second in points,
matching the best season-long result he has ever posted in a
major touring series. “The Outlaw” won both ACT events at
Maine’s Oxford Plains Speedway behind the wheel of his
Rollie Lachance–owned machine and never finished worse
than 12th during the season.
Williamstown, VT’s Jimmy Hebert completed the top-3 in
the standings. The veteran snapped a nearly 5-year winless
streak by winning back-to-back events at Speedway 51 and
White Mountain. He also had three other podium finishes
driving for car owner and father Larry Hebert.
ACT also presented a trio of special awards to drivers and
crew members. Lanorarie, QC’s Claude Leclerc received the
olchester VT’s cott ayea near left celebrates his second straight T championship with car owner ick aya near right and the
second annual Thomas M. Curley Memorial Award. “The
Ironman” was at the first ACT event in 1986 and at Tom’s
final event as a promoter in 2017. All told, Leclerc made more
than 500 starts in events promoted by Tom Curley.
While doing so, he has shown the same passion, dedication,
integrity, and commitment to hard work that Tom valued in
himself and others. At age 77, Leclerc is still going strong,
finishing 7th in ACT points this past season.
David Dubeau was the recipient of the 2018 ACT Crew
Chief of the Year Award. As the crew chief for his brother
Rich Dubeau, he was recognized for being well-prepared at
every event, having a good attitude, and always making the
best of any situation. These things helped his team post the
best season of their ACT career and finish 4th in points.
The 2019 ACT schedule and rules have been released and
are available at www.acttour.com. License applications, team
registration forms, and 2019 full-season entries will be out
shortly.
ACT to “Kickoff” Next Summer
with Trio of Big-Money Shows
Some extra cash will be on the line for the
stars of the American-Canadian Tour (ACT)
next June. ACT officials have announced the
2019 Summer Kickoff Series, a trifecta of
$5,000-to-win events that will be held
throughout the Northeast.
The three-race mini-series continues the
tradition of the 2018 Summer Showdown
Series, which also featured a trio of bigmoney
events. This time, however, all three
events will be held in a four-week span,
meaning the month of June will be a lucrative
one for at least one ACT-type Late Model
racer.
Just like with last year’s Showdown Series,
there will also be a $5,000 bonus posted
should a driver sweep all three Summer
Kickoff Series events. This means a single
racer could bring home up to $20,000 in prize
money next June.
For the first event in the Summer Kickoff
Series, the ACT Late Model Tour will travel
north of the border to Vallée-Jct., QC’s
Autodrome Chaudiere on Saturday, June 1.
The Chaudiere 150 will be the ACT Late
Model Tour’s first point-counting event at the
¼-mile bullring since 2015. Several Tour racers
have some experience to draw on after
participating in last year’s non-point Bacon
Bowl 200.
Two weeks later, on Saturday, June 15, the
ACT Late Model Tour will race for a $5,000
top prize at Connecticut’s Thompson
Speedway. Scheduled less than one week
before the official onset of summer, the
Thompson 75 the first of two ACT events at
the 5/8-mile oval in 2018.
For the final event in the series, the Tour
heads to Epping, NH’s Star Speedway on
Saturday, June 29. The Summer 150 will be
the first ACT event at the ¼-mile oval since
2013. It comes in the track’s first year using
ACT rules for their weekly Late Model division.
In addition to big money at the top, the
three events will see increased purses
throughout much of the field. All told, more
than $100,000 in total awards will be posted
by ACT during the month of June. The trifecta
of events will also award points towards
the 2018 ACT Late Model Tour Championship.
“This is a great way to get the summer of
racing started,” ACT managing partner Cris
Michaud said. “We thought the Summer
Showdown Series went well last year, so we
were ready to continue it this year. And then
it just happened to work out that we were able
to schedule three big-money events in the
same month! While the name has changed to
reflect the updated schedule, we expect the
racing to be as exciting as it was last year.”
The complete 2019 ACT Late Model Tour
schedule and rules are now posted at www.
acttour.com. For more information, contact
the ACT offices at (802) 244-6963 or media@
How Best to Process Deer
Vermont is one of the most rural states in
the country, and Vermonters have a proud
heritage of living close to the land. Hunting
is highly regulated and provides a way to
connect with the land, connect with nature
and connect with a healthy, sustainable food
source that is rooted in Vermont. In 2017,
Vermont’s four big game species (deer, bear,
turkey and moose) yielded more than 3.5
million servings of wild game meat.
Making the most of these meals starts with
the immediate processing of game correctly
which is why the Vermont Fish & Wildlife
Department now has three online videos
demonstrating how to process deer. Finding
the videos is easy on the Fish & Wildlife
website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com). Click
on “Hunt” and then “From Field to Freezer.”
The educational videos are titled Field
Dressing Your Deer, Skinning a Deer and
Butchering a Deer.
“Correctly processing game can make a
big difference in the taste of the meat,” said
Nicole Meier, an information and education
specialist with the department. “Taking the
time to do it correctly assures that you and
your family will have many enjoyable meals
ahead.”
for a deer this year during the muzzleloader
deer season and the second part of the archery
deer season. The two seasons run at the same
time -- December 1-9.
A muzzleloader hunter may take one legal
buck anywhere in the state. In addition, a
hunter who received a muzzleloader antlerless
deer permit may take one antlerless deer
in the Wildlife Management Unit (WMU)
designated on the permit.
An archery hunter may take a legal buck
anywhere in the state, provided they didn’t
take one in the earlier part of archery season.
An archery hunter may take an antlerless deer
anywhere in the state.
A legal buck is a deer with at least one
antler having two or more points one inch or
longer.
An antlerless deer is a deer without antlers
or with no antler longer than three inches.
• • •
A deer with three-inch or longer spike antlers
may not be taken during the archery,
November rifle, or muzzleloader seasons.
A muzzleloader or archery license is
required in addition to a standard hunting
license, except for a nonresident who chooses
to purchase just a limited archery license for
the archery season.
Vermont hunters may take up to three deer
in a calendar year with appropriate licenses
and permits for each deer season (archery,
youth weekend, November rifle, December
muzzleloader). Only two of the three deer in
the annual limit may be legal bucks, but only
one legal buck may be taken in each season.
This was another successful year for Vermont’s bald eagles
with 23 known nesting pairs producing at least 33 successful
young according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
The bald eagle remains on the list of species protected
under Vermont’s state endangered species law, but its continued
recovery success may enable it to be delisted within the
next five years.
“The continued recovery of bald eagles is the result of a
long-term effort by our department and our partners to conserve
the habitat these birds need to thrive,” said John Buck,
migratory bird biologist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife.
Bald eagles declined in the Twentieth Century nationwide
due to loss of habitat, disturbance to nests and the effects of
the pesticide DDT. Laws such as the Clean Water Act, the
Endangered Species Act and a ban on DDT have aided in their
recovery.
Bald eagles have recovered in most of the continental U.S.
and have been removed from the federal endangered species
list but remain on Vermont’s state endangered species list as
they continue to recover locally.
“Vermonters have played a huge role in the recovery of
bald eagles,” said Margaret Fowle, biologist with Audubon
Vermont. “We work with a large number of citizen volunteers
who help monitor nests, while the general public has aided in
recovery efforts by maintaining a respectful distance from
them during the critical nesting season.”
Vermonters can help researchers in their effort to conserve
birds by donating online to the nongame wildlife fund at
www.vtfishandwildlife.com or by purchasing a conservation
license plate for their vehicle.
