MATT SILVIA
RECREATION ASSISTANT
SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR
Matt grew up skiing
in the northeast and
eventually transitioned
over to snowboarding as
a teenager.
FENTON FITZGERALD JR.
DIRECTOR
SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR
Fenton started skiing
when he was 12. His
friends convinced him to
try snowboarding and he
instantly fell in love with
the sport.
instructors have had their share of
scrapes and bruises while riding.
ODR staff highly recommend
ski helmets and that riders stay
away from trees and rocks. Yoshi
always tells his students, “Trees
are not your friend.”
Consider your experience level
and physical abilities before
going down a tricky slope or
attempting a difficult trick. And
if you feel yourself falling, do
it safely! Avoid falling on your
wrists as they’re prone to breaks
and fractures. When skiing, it’s
best to fall sideways on your
hip. Snowboarders should fall
forwards onto their forearms or
backwards on their behind.
TAKE LESSONS
Improve by leaps and bounds
with lessons. Learning from a
professional instructor will also
prevent bad habits from the start.
ODR offers lessons on many of
their trips. When you sign up,
simply let the staff know you’re
interested in taking a lesson for
a small extra fee. Many of the ski
resorts also offer intermediate
and advanced lessons in English.
HAVE FUN
Skiing and snowboarding are
great ways to get outside and
explore Japan’s beautiful winter
season. Plus, gliding on top of
the snow as you ride down a
mountain is pure fun. As Kuni so
mildly puts it, “There’s nothing
better to do in the winter so you
might as well ski.”
JUNJI KUNIMATSU (KUNI)
travelled as a snowboard
at ski resorts around the
world before settling back
down in Japan.
YOSHIMASA
NAKAMURA (YOSHI)
