PRESIDENT’S WORD<br />
Syd Freeman, David Aiton, Paul Shearer & Darren Freeman at the <strong>2018</strong> ANZAC Day March, Perth WA<br />
Welcome all, to our first sitrep (Situation<br />
Report), aptly named “The Winnie” after<br />
the radio the 2/2 Independent Company<br />
built whilst cut off in East Timor in 1942.<br />
The Western <strong>Australia</strong>n branch of the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
<strong>Commando</strong> Association was established from humble<br />
beginnings in April 2017. Since then we have made<br />
serious progress to establish the fourth branch of the<br />
national brotherhood of the <strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Commando</strong><br />
Association.<br />
The founding members need to be recognised for<br />
their belief that we could make this happen. I per -<br />
sonally thank the commitment of Darren Freeman,<br />
Syd Freeman, David Aiton, Ian Prothero, Whoopi<br />
Sanders, Garry White and Alan Joyce.<br />
Our ethos is “<strong>Commando</strong> for Life”. I extend this<br />
ethos to ensure our history is remembered and lives<br />
on.<br />
Our base and our family comprise those that have<br />
served in front line units and in support, those parents<br />
and siblings of those that have served in <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
<strong>Commando</strong> units and most significantly those who<br />
have paid the ultimate price for our country.<br />
Since our inception we have made significant<br />
bounds not just in WA. We have representation on the<br />
national committee of the Association, we have finally<br />
marched on Anzac Day <strong>2018</strong> under our own banner,<br />
officially attended the 2/2 Independent Company<br />
commemoration, we have built solid networks across<br />
the established branches and we have participated in<br />
the inaugural “<strong>Commando</strong>s Return” pilgrimage to<br />
Timor Leste in 2017.<br />
To all members I look forward to meeting you<br />
personally in the future as we continue to build the<br />
branch and fortify our <strong>Commando</strong> Family.<br />
