WELCOME TO WESTBOURNE PARK 13
Cool and colourful, we love our little bit of
London. Here are some of the reasons why...
THE DECORATIVE FAIR
In January 2019 we will once again be part
of The Decorative Antiques and Textiles
Fair. The fair is held three times a year in
Battersea Park and features over 150 dealers
from across the UK and Europe. You’ll find
exciting and unusual ideas for the home, as
well as art from all periods. The fair is a great
place to spend a few hours, wandering the
stands and perhaps enjoying a bite to eat
in The Kitchen on the Mezzanine level. The
Winter fair opens on January 22. We will be
sending out invitations to the fair just after
Christmas and hope to see you there.
In October we held the first solo exhibition for
Liverpool artist Jason Thompson. The show – ‘I
am Jason Thompson’ – was a great success and
confirmed our belief that Jason is a strong talent
who will go far. We still have some of his wonderful
small paintings for sale at the gallery, including
those pictured here.
FOCUS ON HUGO GUINNESS
WILSON STEPHENS AND JONES REPRESENT HUGO IN THE UK.
GUINNESS IS
GOOD FOR YOU
Hugo’s quirky take on life comes alive in his
unique linocuts, each one in a specially chosen
vintage frame. The perfect gift for collectors or
someone new to his work.
Signed linocuts
in vintage frames.
From £320.
Hugo spent much of his school years in the art department
making figures from empty loo rolls and cornflake packets.
Although he won a painting prize at school, his artistic nature
was not encouraged. Eventually he prevailed upon his parents
and went to art school in London to study studio pottery. The
success of his business brought Hugo to New York in 1995.
In 2002, Hugo showed his early linocuts of underpants and
battleships to John Derian. They became friends and John
encouraged Hugo to do larger work. He has had four shows at
the legendary store since then. Hugo lives in Brooklyn with his
wife Elliot Puckette, the painter, and their two daughters.
FOCUS ON BEN MCLAUGHLIN
THE ARTIST’S LATEST WORK SEES INFLUENCES FROM HIS CHILDHOOD
Mixed media collages. From £900.
Ben McLaughlin’s mother was a graphic designer and his father
a photographer so he was raised in a creative environment. Ben
and his siblings were allowed to draw all over the walls of their
Battersea home’s entrance hall, which his parents covered in
lining paper. Recently Ben has been looking through boxes of his
mother’s reference material, much of which he has incorporated in
his new collage work. The results are both emotional and beautiful.
CEPAGE[S]
Dan and Geoffray opened Cépage[s] next to
the gallery in 2014 and the independent French
bistro has become a firm favourite. Boutique
and fine wines are served alongside tapas with a
twist that echo French gastronomy classics and
seasonal ingredients. The guys are also wine
importers focusing on exclusive wineries that
promote the quality of their Terroir and work
with the deepest respect for their vines. Oh,
and you might recgnise some of the pictures on
their walls! 69 Westbourne Park Road, London
LUTYENS & RUBINSTEIN
Who doesn’t love a good book? Call us oldfashioned
but a Kindle doesn’t come close
when it comes to reading. Our friends
Sarah and Felicity hit the nail on the head
when they decided to open a bookshop
selling the kind of books they and their
friends loved to read. Nearly a decade on,
Lutyens & Rubinstein is one of the best
independent bookstores around.
Matthew J Pitts (left) studied fine art at Norwich School of Art
and Design and is now based in St Leonards-on-Sea, on the
south coast of England. He says: “In many ways painting can
seem a selfish pursuit, but like many others I have a desire to
create and I am drawn to the physical process of painting. I
create work in an attempt to better understand the parameters
of painting and in turn, better understand the world around me
and my place within it. I hope that there is generosity to be found
in the images that I make and that viewing them and living with
them can be a positive experience.” Matthew’s work is available
at the gallery now. See more at wilsonstephensandjones.com.
GOLBORNE ROAD
Just a stone’s throw from the gallery at
the lesser-known end of Portobello Road
is Golborne Road. With its villagey feel and
multicultural community, it’s the perfect
place to head to at the weekend. Enjoy
a lentil soup at our favourite Moroccan
Soup Stand or delicious cakes from Lisboa
Pâtisserie. If you still feel like shopping after
all that eating, head to one of our favourite
fabric stores – Warris Vianni & Co.
