Short courses (NQF level 5) for retail employees
The Wholesale and Retail Leadership Academy at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape
Town offers 4 short courses on a block release basis:
CERTIFICATE IN RETAILING 1
(subjects: ‘Nature of retail and retail business management’ and
‘Marketing activities of a retailer’)
CERTIFICATE IN RETAIL OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT 1
(subjects: ‘Principles of management in retail’ and
‘Principles of operational management in a retail store’)
CERTIFICATE IN RETAIL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 1
(subjects: ‘Financial accounting for retailers’ and
‘Retail financial management principles’)
CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNICATION 1
(subjects: ‘Communication theory/Intercultural communication’ and
‘Organisational communication/academic writing/oral communication/business communication & meetings’)
The programme is designed to have very little influence on the operations of your business because it uses a
blended mode of learning which entails:
• Block release classes are offered at CPUT's Cape Town campus during the off-peak periods of your
business, namely mid-month and mid-week. Learners do one certificate at a time, attending two
consecutive days once a month for 6 months for each certificate.
• Lectures are complemented by self-study using hardcopy and electronic notes. All learning materials are
provided to students in hard copy, electronic format as well as on the Academy’s learning management
system accessed via the Internet.
• Lecturers are available for consultation via e-mail between the block periods.
Applicants must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC), N3 certificate (NCV) or equivalent. Completion
of these short courses will enable the student to apply for exemption from the applicable Retail Business
Management Diploma subjects at CPUT and recognition is also possible on future QCTO qualifications. The
total fee for each certificate is R12 500 (including lunch and materials). Bursaries may be applied for from the
W&RSETA.
If you want to enrol yourself or one of your staff, or want any further information, please contact Andiswa Mrasi
(the Academy Manager) or Robyn Majiet (Admin Assistant).
