They enjoy long walks, treats and their favorite pastime of giving snuggles and kisses to anyone willing to engage. Opi is 12 and a half and Quinn is 2 and a half, making theirs a wonderful pairing perfect for the dog days of summer, fall, winter and spring! Help! We’re running low on pets to feature. The event, held Nov. 24, is held nationally the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The alliance featured a We Love Downtown HP passport to accompany the nation-wide event and to help kick off the holiday gift-buying season with an extra incentive to support local businesses. Shoppers had a chance to win gifts during the event. “Shoppers picked up a paper passport from the Alliance location at Rock N Rags, which listed the names of more than 45 additional downtown HP businesses involved in the event,” said Ariana Pup, marketing director for the Highland Park Alliance. “They received a stamp for their passport each time they visited a participating business. Each stamp represented an entry into a pool of more than $3,000 worth of prizes from participating businesses. At the end of their shopping spree, they dropped off their passports at the official Alliance booth.” Northbrook’s Sally Marver took the Downtown Highland Park Alliance’s Small Business Saturday to heart. She arrived at the start of event and visited every business on the passport with one exception. Her shopping bags were proof. Others did similarly. “This day, Small Highland Park city manager Ghida Neukirch (right) does some shopping with her daughter (second from right) on Small Business Saturday held Nov. 24 around Highland Park. Photo Submitted Business Saturday, has been our day for a while now,” Sue Graue, of Highland Park, said. “We do not like the malls and the crowds and want to make sure stores around us stay filled and not empty. It is sad to see vacant stores.” Graue shopped at Table Compliments with her friend Lake Forest’s Laura Isaacs. “We avoid Black Fridays and want to keep the business in our local communities,” Isaacs said. “Look at this unique Santa dish towel. You cannot find this online.” Cheryl Balkin stopped in Goodies Etc. to buy candy treats for the upcoming Hanukkah holiday. “I always come here for holiday treats,” said Balkin. “Goodies is one of my favorite places.” “It always is a good time to shop locally,” said Matt Vanderkooy who was at Goodies Etc. with his wife Sandra and children Olivia, 5, and Evan, 2. “It is like giving back to our community.” Avant for Men is Jim Zechman’s favorite downtown HP store while he and his wife, Bargie Zechman, both like Therapeutic Kneads, Coffee Speaks and City Woods. “We have lived in Highland Park for 43 years and always shop the small businesses in downtown Highland Park,” said Jim Zechman. “Coffee Speaks has the best coffee anywhere and City Woods has everything from furniture and gifts to scarves, jewelry and gifts. Just look at something they have and you will know you need it.” Glenview’s Judith Kintonis visited the store, Jayne. “Look at these Earth shoes,” said Kintonis. “I know I can buy them online but I would rather come here and see them in person and look at what else Jayne has. Besides you get 20 percent off today.” Noell Vaughn and daughter, Mia, 12, were over at Nic + Zoe. “We like to do holiday shopping together,” said Noell Vaughn. “I also get an updated idea of her style and what she likes now. It is a fun afternoon.” Wilmette’s Barb and Buddy O’Brien drove over to Highland Park for Small Business Saturday because they like the variety of businesses in its downtown area. “We can find many unique items and the customer service is great,” said Barb O’Brien. “The people are friendly and store owners find the best things.” Even Highland Park’s City Manager Ghida Neukirch practices what she preaches about shopping locally. She and daughter Jaclyn, 13, stopped in Adesso looking for yet more gifts for friends and family members. They held nine shopping bags between the two of them from various Highland Park downtown businesses. Also in Adesso with their own bags from assorted stores were Jennie Moore and husband Glenn Zelinsky. “We do this every year because we want to keep them [stores] in the community,” said Moore. “They should do this Small Business Saturday more than once a year,” said Zelinsky.
