After-school time well spent at Ivy League Kids
For many working families,
school hours do not cover the extent
of a full work-day, making
the time outside of school hours
a challenge.
Structured and organized activity
after school can not only
have a positive impact on students,
but also keep the work
force working. Fortunately, a
number of schools work with Ivy
League Kids, a before- and afterschool
program that focuses on
fitness recreation and academic
enrichment in a healthy, safe environment
for all students in kindergarten
through eighth grade.
Ivy League is offered on-site at
the schools, making it a safe and
convenient option for parents.
The program offers homework
help, STEM education, arts and
crafts, character building and
sports and recreational activities.
Program Director Carmen
Garza said the first hour is usually
dedicated to homework help
and snack time followed by arts
and crafts, games and gym activities.
Outdoor activities are
available weather permitting.
“This program doesn’t just
help the parents to have a safe
place for their children to go
after school, but it benefits the
students as well,” Garza said.
“Every afternoon we go over
character traits such as kindness,
cooperation and gratitude and
we see a significant improvement
in many students throughout
the program.”
For holidays or days off
school, Ivy League offers all-day
programming in Mokena, Alsip,
Shorewood and Flossmoor.
Christmas Camp this year offers
a diverse schedule of activities
that include a holidaythemed
baking day, STEM day,
relay races, pajama party, and
field trips to Odyssey Fun World,
Emagine Theatres and much
more. Lunch, snack and before
and after hours are also included.
Sr. Director of Business Development
Kris O’Connor has
been working on expanding
the program to more communities
and has added Ivy League
programming to more than 13
schools this year.
“We take after school seriously,”
O’Connor said. “We know
how important our job is as role
models to the students and the
community. It’s a good feeling to
know that families can rely on us
to be there for their kids.”
Ivy League Kids accepts the
childcare assistance program offered
by the State, so families are
able to apply for financial assistance
if needed.
