Armenian American Museum History 

2014 

The Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee Western USA adopted the Armenian 

American Museum and Cultural Center of California as its official landmark project. 

The Museum initiated discussions with the City of Glendale to identify a premier location 

to build the world class cultural and educational center in the heart of Southern California. 

Lord Cultural Resources, an internationally acclaimed museum 

consulting firm, created the Museum’s Concept Development Plan. 

2015 

2016 

The City of Glendale agreed to an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement for the Museum’s initial proposed site 

adjacent to the Glendale Civic Auditorium and across the Glendale Community College. 

The Museum Board of Trustees was established, entrusting its governance to ten united 

Armenian American cultural, philanthropic, and religious non-profit institutions. 

Alajajian Marcoosi Architects, an internationally acclaimed architecture firm, was selected as the architect 

for the Armenian American Museum after an international call was launched. 

The Museum unveiled its branding and logo, representing the mountains of Ararat 

and the initials “AAM” for the project. 

The Museum unveiled its first concept design for the initial proposed site adjacent to the Glendale Civic 

Auditorium and across the Glendale Community College. 

The City of Glendale proposed a new downtown site for the Armenian American Museum in heart of the 

city’s Arts & Entertainment District in Glendale Central Park. 

The Museum hosted the “Armenia: An Open Wound” exhibition attracting more than 10,000 

visitors to the Brand Library & Art Center to experience the exhibition. 

2017 

California Governor Jerry Brown signs the 2016-2017 State budget with $1 million earmarked 

for the Armenian American Museum. 

Alajajian Marcoosi Architects unveiled its new concept design for the Museum’s downtown 

site in Glendale Central Park. 

The Armenian American Museum unveiled its new animated video and interactive tour of 

the project’s concept design. 

Aly Sterling Philanthropy, a leading non-profit consulting firm, was hired to perform 

the Museum’s Financial Feasibility Study. 

2018 

California Governor Jerry Brown signed the 2017-2018 State budget with $3 million earmarked 

for the Armenian American Museum, bringing the State’s total commitment to $4 million. 

The City of Glendale unveiled plans for a redesigned Central Park with the Museum 

featuring increased park space and improved amenities. 

The Armenian American Museum launched a petition drive campaign that attracted more than 7,000 

individuals to sign the petition and show the community’s strong support for the historic project. 

The Glendale City Council unanimously approved the Museum’s Ground Lease Agreement, 

a historic decision officially marking Glendale Central Park as the Museum’s future site. 

The Museum launched its Groundbreaking Campaign to raise awareness and raise funds for the historic 

project leading up to the highly anticipated groundbreaking celebration.

Armenian American Museum in the Glendale area. The Armenian 

American Museum tirelessly works to promote understanding and 

appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the 

Armenian American experience. 

This organization has given Armenian Americans the opportunity to 

discover their roots and for people of diverse backgrounds to discover 

cross-cultural connections, and I could not be more proud to

by the Armenian American Museum. 

Genocide is central to the psyche and culture of every Californian of 

Armenian heritage. This institution would be similar to the California 

African American Museum, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Los 

Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, the Latino Museum of History, 

Art and Cul-ture, and the Japanese American National Museum—all 

of which prominently feature the histo-ry and suffering of their distinct 

communities which make up the fabric of our region. 

It was my privilege to work with the Armenian-American community 

to secure state funding for this important and worthy project that 

will serve its mission today and for many generations to come.

It was just over four years ago, the Glendale City Council entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with the Armenian 

Genocide Centennial Committee – Western U.S. to bring the Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of 

California to Glendale. Galvanized to action, Armenian-American community leaders, the Museum Governing Board, and 

the Glendale City Council engaged in a process that would lay the first layer of foundation for the Museum. Over those 

four years the Glendale City Council and city staff worked diligently in partnership with the Armenian American Museum 

and Cultural Center of California to identify the best path forward. 

On August 14, 2018, the Glendale City Council approved the ground lease agreement to locate the Armenian American 

Museum in the heart of Glendale, the epicenter of Armenian American habitation. It’s central location at the corner of 

Brand Boulevard and Colorado Street situates it in close proximity to Glendale landmarks like the Americana, Alex Theater, 

Glendale Galleria, Central Library, and a thriving downtown area rich with civic and economic activity. 

The City Council realizes success when the community is safe, prosperous, and rich in cultural offerings. The Museum’s 

vision of enriching the community, educating the public on the Armenian American story, and empowering individuals to 

embrace cultural diversity and speak out against prejudice align with that vision. Designed as a world class cultural and 

educational center, the Museum will be a place of discovery for all people as they connect with the Armenian culture and 

the City of Glendale. 

The Glendale City Council is honored to have been part of an historic moment in the story of the City of Glendale. This 

Council, future Councils, and city staff have and always will continue to support and work with its partners in support of 

the Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of California.
