Brexit; recruitment issues and attracting the next generation;
material price hikes; supply issues; poor payment practices – if
you look back over 2018 and forward to 2019, unfortunately a lot
of the issues that have been impacting our sectors and the wider
construction industry in recent years will continue to do so.
One key influencer, however, for the whole of the construction sector
going forward will be the Hackitt Review. Addressing a number of wideranging
issues, one key theme in the Hackitt Review is competency of
the workforce. This point was made by a number of the contributors to
our issues and trends feature on p.16. Sarah Spink, CEO of LRWA, told
us: “Competence will be another key theme for next year as a result of
the Hackitt report, which will put a spotlight on areas including roofing
design, testing, materials, installation and maintenance”. James
Talman, Chief Executive of the NFRC, also explained the role he feels
RoofCERT will play in delivering competency: “Accreditation will provide
existing operatives with a means to gain essential skills, increase their
technical knowledge and prove their competence to clients.” Stuart Bell
of Polyfoam XPS, however, explained how he believes the Hackitt
Review can change the trend for specified materials such as insulation
being switched during construction and after project-design stage
compliance has been achieved. Stuart told us: “We hope that following
the Hackitt Review, we will begin to see this trend shift in 2019.” So
read on for all this and so much more – and don’t forget to tweet us
