Message from Dr. Michael Kay
Head of School
Dear Schechter Westchester Community:
Validation of our success from within our own
community is always gratifying. We were very
proud, for example, when our February 2017
parent survey revealed an overall rate of family
satisfaction higher than that of any comparable
school that administered the survey, or when our
Upper School students declared at the highest
rate of any surveyed school population
nationwide that they believe that “teachers and
school staff care about me as a student.”
As affirming as this internal approval is, it is also
important to measure our excellence against
external standards. This took place during the
2017-2018 school year with the visit of the New
York State Association of Independent Schools’
re-accreditation committee, whose members
embedded themselves in our community to offer
feedback and ensure that our school meets the
highest standards for educational excellence.
The report of the visiting committee was
resoundingly positive, and it specifically
praised us for the manner in which Schechter
Westchester simultaneously offers both
a top-quality academic and co-curricular
program and an unparalleled communal
environment. The committee members noted
the ways in which we prepare our students to
take on leadership roles in the Jewish community
while remaining fully immersed in the intellectual
and cultural life of our broader society.
In 2017-2018 we introduced a number of new
programs that epitomize this drive for outstanding
Jewish education without compromise. In the
world’s first TOM Makeathon at the high school
level, our Engineering and Entrepreneurship
students utilized their technical and design skills
to invent products that would improve the lives of
people with disabilities. A reimagined High School
schedule enabled the introduction of new elective
courses in the arts, psychology, computer science,
and other disciplines — without diminishing
opportunities in Judaic studies or other core
areas. A new partnership with the Virtual High
School opened up dozens of possibilities for
online learning, with classmates and instructors
spread across the world. And throughout all three
divisions, we piloted new enrichment opportunities
in English Language Arts, engineering, rabbinics,
calculus, biology, and Hebrew — all embedded
within a communal ethos built around kindness
and upstander education.
This ever-expanding array of educational and
character-building opportunities does not come
without substantial financial investment. We deeply
appreciate the sacrifices that our families make
to provide a SW education to their children.
We also recognize that tuition income alone does
not cover the cost of the Schechter Westchester
experience, and that the Schechter Annual Fund
(SAF) is the key to our ability to meet each student’s
needs, offer a robust program inside and outside
the classroom, and maintain both our high rates of
internal satisfaction and our external imprimaturs.
With this in mind, we humbly express our immense
gratitude to the 976 individual donors — our
highest number ever! — who together contributed
$3,261,755 to the SAF. We are inspired by our
ongoing partnership with you as we continue
expanding both the opportunities that we offer
for students and the range of families who can
find a satisfying home within our school community.

Chair of Development
Dear Schechter Westchester
Families and Friends:
Thank you so much for generously donating your
money and your time to Schechter Westchester
this past year.
As Development Chair, I head a committee of
dedicated community volunteers that is tasked
with raising over $3 million to offset operating
expenses in the current year’s budget. We strive
to find new and innovative ways to reach our goal
through a variety of programs and events that
appeal to a cross section of our community.
Your donations help us provide cutting-edge
STEAM education from kindergarten through
High School, enable us to award more than
$9 million in tuition assistance per year so that
we can provide an outstanding Jewish education
to as many students as possible, and allow us
to attract and retain top-notch educators.
We field competitive sports teams, develop
arts programs, and send meals to families when
they experience lifecycle events.
Schechter Westchester is so much more than an
excellent school. We are a kehilah, a community,
and each of us, whether a parent, grandparent,
faculty or staff member, alum, or friend, plays
an important role, no matter what you are able
to give. It’s not just about giving money; it is
also about showing up and supporting each
other in a multitude of ways. While money
is essential, the gift of time is just as vital
to help us continue our work.
Our kehilah is why I choose to volunteer
my time to help Schechter Westchester raise
money. I have been a parent in the school for
17 years. During good times, but even more
importantly during challenging times, this
community has been there for me in more
ways than I can count.
We are this vibrant community because
of the support you have given to Schechter
West chester, whether in time, expertise,
or dollars, and we thank you for everything
you have done and continue to do for
the school. Your participation enriches

Jewish Life at Schechter Westchester
As the sun set over Jerusalem on a Friday
afternoon this past March, the twelfth-grade
class assembled in their Shabbat finest and
walked from the Fuchsberg Center to the
Old City, gathering at the Robinson’s Arch
section of the Kotel. There they davened
Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma’ariv to welcome
Shabbat, singing and dancing together.
Embracing the lessons and Jewish life
skills gleaned from Schechter Westchester,
these seniors created a beautiful and joyous
Jewish moment, one that was thirteen years
in the making.
Chagim and important moments across the
Jewish calendar also provide ideal opportunities
for Jewish life moments each year, whether Rosh
HaShanah seders and tashlich at the beginning
of the year, or an Erev Shavuot learning session
planned exclusively by students shortly before
summer break. Each day, in a myriad of ways,
Schechter Westchester simultaneously teaches
and celebrates Jewish life, helping our students
build the foundation for a meaningful future.
From kindergarten through twelfth grade,
our students are immersed in lived Jewish
experiences, from learning their first tefilot
in the Lower School, to tying tzitzit and
mastering the Torah service in the Middle
School, to experiencing Shabbat together
on annual shabbatonim in the High School.
In each grade and at each stage of the students’
development, our rabbis and Jewish educators
craft increasingly sophisticated Jewish life
experiences that empower the students to
master new skills and leave them with deeply
embedded values and impactful memories
that they will take with them when they
graduate and head out into the world.

This is exactly why we send our kids to the
school — to insll the love for Judaism and
see how it evolves over me and becomes
part of them, part of their lives.

PTO Highlights
The Schechter Westchester Parent Teacher
Organization (PTO) is an active group of
dedicated volunteers who are committed to
fostering a strong and supportive kehilah
(community) and to providing opportunities for
parents, teachers, and administrators to partner
in the enhancement of our students’ education.
The PTO plans and sponsors numerous events
and programs throughout each year, including
gradewide celebrations after assemblies,
schoolwide plays, a book fair, a STEAMposium
(an interactive symposium with workshops
dedicated to STEAM activities), both a moms’
and dads’ night out, and other social evenings
for parents. Each year the PTO celebrates and
recognizes the faculty and staff with both
Chanukah and end-of-year receptions as well
as gifts for each faculty and staff member.
Celebrate Israel parade in New York City, and
volunteers at the Lower School Yom Chesed
event, helping students with different charitable
activities. The PTO also organizes and implements
the weekly Shabbat challah delivery
service for families and distributes other holiday
items such as lulavim and etrogim for Sukkot.
The PTO takes great pride in all of the events
and activities we help coordinate in partnership
with the staff and leadership at the school.
We rely on parent volunteers to make our
efforts successful and in turn these parents
help enhance the
wonderful
community that
is Schechter
Westchester.
To help honor and celebrate the Jewish holidays
at the school the PTO organizes a Purim carnival,
a Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel Independence Day)
celebration, distributes Chanukah candy and
candles, and delivers a mishloach manot package
of treats to each family during Purim. The PTO
runs blood drives at the Upper School campus,
designs and provides spirit wear for the

From the day I started at SW, it felt like
the school had magic to make everybody
happy and kind. Everybody has chesed.

Technology,
Computer Science
and Engineering
In December 2017, Schechter Westchester’s
signature E 2 (Engineering and Entrepreneurship)
program partnered with Israeli not-for-profit
TOM (Tikkun Olam Makers) to host the firstever
TOM Makeathon at the high school level.
Twenty-one twelfth-grade students formed four
engineering teams and gathered at SW for this
two-day technology development marathon,
in which students worked together with people
with physical disabilities (known in the TOM
community as “Need-Knowers”) to develop
solutions for everyday challenges. The four
teams had access to the three MakerSpaces on
the SW M. Mac Schwebel Upper School campus,
stocked with 3D printers, electronics fabrication
materials, and woodworking equipment. Together
with their Need-Knower, each team had 48 hours
to brainstorm, develop, and create a working
prototype to address their particular need.
