The only way I can answer is that right now, what I’m working with are melted crayons. The reason is I’m also a musician and I used to own a jewelry company, and I have a degree in theater, so I don’t just stick with one medium. How long have you been working with melted crayons? For the last five or six years, that’s primarily what I’ve been doing. Why did you decide to start creating art with melted crayons? Years ago, I home schooled my kids and we had a bucket of crayons in an art cabinet in the room in our house where we had the home-school room. Every year there would be broken crayons and everything and I would throw them in this big bucket, and for whatever reason I felt like “there’s got to be something to do with these crayons.” So carried this bucket around with me for a little while and I’m not exactly sure how I came up with the idea, but I think I found out that you can light a crayon on fire and create a candle that way, so I started just playing with some of these broken crayons and lighting them on fire. I realized that they melted at a really low temperature, and so I tried a hair dryer and realized I could melt the crayons with a hair dryer. Do you do art full time, or is it more of a hobby? Any form of artwork that I’ve ever been involved with comes from a very selfish position. It’s never been intended to make money or really be in the public eye. I do art because that’s who I am, that’s how I express myself, that’s how I give gifts… When I started using the melted crayons, I was going through a divorce and it was literal therapy for me. When I didn’t have my kids, which was a very hard thing for me, I would do artwork for days on end. It helped me get through a lot. What is the toughest part of doing art for you? The toughest part for me, because I don’t do it professionally and I’m just a busy person because I’m the single parent of three kids, and I’m an insurance broker, is to find the time and the emotional space to do my art. I live in a really small apartment. I don’t have studio space, so literally my kitchen, dining room, office and studio is all one room. I don’t have a place where I could just leave the stuff out. If I could leave it out, I would accomplish more, so I struggle with getting into shows for TAGOL because it takes me months to prepare to gather the materials that I need and then to work on a piece. It takes a lot of emotional space to express yourself artistically, and that’s probably the biggest challenge I face at this time. Do you have any future goals for your art? Yeah, I would love to be a little more serious, a little bit more focused about it. And I think as my kids get older and as I get a little more stable in my career, I can foresee myself having the physical space and the emotional space more available so I can be more prolific and kind of seek it out a little bit more intentionally. How would you describe your own artistic style? I would call it more expressionistic, more abstract. Where do you get your inspiration from? I get it from everywhere. In fact I’m working on a piece right now and I was inspired to do the piece I’m working on right now because in my bathroom there’s a tile that’s cracked and it formed what I saw was a little image. And I literally looked at this tile for the last two and a half years and kept seeing the same image over and over and I’m using that as the inspiration for my next piece. What are your favorite pieces you’ve done? One of my favorite pieces hangs in a friend of mine’s house. Another one is here on the top of my bookshelf and it’s actually a cross. It was one of the first pieces that I made. Every time I look at it, I just feel really appreciative.
