London is the most cosmopolitan capital in the
World. In our great city more than 250 languages are
spoken, highlighting just how London really is the
most diverse and inclusive city of all.
So, what could be more appropriate than the
theme for London’s New Year’s Day Parade? –
‘London Welcomes the World’.
At the start of each year, we at London’s New Year’s Day Parade really do just that –
it’s a veritable cultural kaleidoscope with 8,000 performers giving London a lift.
People from all five continents – Europe, Asia, Africa, The Americas and Australasia
– will be represented at our street spectacular either as performers or spectators.
Just take a look at some of the highlights: Mentalist and illusionist Andrews Lee
(of Britain’s Got Talent fame) flying in from Malaysia, budding country star Kaleb Lee
(The Voice USA) jetting to London from Florida, dancers from Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela,
Columbia and Bolivia, native Americans from North Carolina. Don’t forget our hugely
popular marching bands and cheerleaders from more than a dozen states in the USA.
But, as importantly to me, 16 boroughs from right across the Capital will have a
wonderful opportunity to show the World what they have to offer, entertain the
spectators on the streets and the huge global TV audience watching live – and raise
huge amounts of money for some really great charitable causes.
So bring your friends and family and before 12 noon get down to anywhere along
the route from Green Park to Parliament Square via Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street,
St James’s, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall. And there may be one or two grandstand
tickets still available at www.ticketmaster.com if you want an unforgettable experience
and be under cover.
Please remember that the fun and festivities aren’t just confined to January 1st –
with our fabulous Concert Series featuring some extraordinarily talented students
performing at various London locations (visit www.lnydp.com @lnydp)
Clive Rowe as Widow Twankey in Hackney Empire’s Aladdin.
ALADDIN – HACKNEY EMPIRE
20th ANNIVERSARY PANTOMIME
This year, Hackney Empire is presenting
Aladdin, its landmark 20th anniversary
Christmas pantomime from writer and
director Susie McKenna and composer
Steven Edis. The celebratory production
runs at Hackney Empire until 6 January.
Aladdin stars Olivier Award-winning
Grande Dame of pantomime Clive Rowe
making his Hackney comeback in the role
of Widow Twankey to mark his 12th panto
with the venue. Olivier Award nominated
actress, television star and comedian
Tameka Empson also returns to play The
Empress in her sixth Empire panto and
following her last stage appearance 9 years
ago. They are joined by Gemma Sutton
(Gypsy, The Rink) in the title role, Julie
Yammanee (Spamilton, Here Lies Love) as
Princess Ling Mai and Empire regular
Kat B as Genie of the Lamp.
Aladdin is once again written and
directed by Susie McKenna, bringing a
glittering show packed with magical fun,
song, dance, slapstick comedy and
audience participation for all the family.
In the Far East End, on the island kingdom
of Ha Ka Ney, young Aladdin dreams of
finding love and making his fortune. When
he discovers an enchanted lamp and meets
a mysterious genie, it looks like all his
wishes are about to come true – with the
help of tap-dancing pandas and his largerthan-life
mum, can he win the hand of his
Princess or will an evil magician, some
madcapped policemen and a very large pile
of laundry, stand in his way?
BAT OUT OF HELL – THE MUSICAL
WEST END SEASON MUST END
The West End season of the awardwinning
Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical
will continue right through the holidays
at the Dominion Theatre until 5 January.
Jim Steinman’s Bat Out Of Hell – The
Musical wowed critics and public alike
when it played at Manchester Opera
House, London Coliseum and Toronto’s
Ed Mirvish Theatre in 2017, and has been
seen by over 650,000 people to date.
Earlier this year, the show’s producers
announced a wide-ranging global
partnership with the Invictus Games
Foundation – an acclaimed Gala
Performance of the musical in support of
the Invictus Games took place last week.
Bat Out Of Hell became one of the
best-selling albums in history, selling
over 50 million copies worldwide. 16
years later, Steinman scored again with
Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell, which
contained the massive hit I Would Do
Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That).
The show is a romantic adventure
about rebellious youth and passionate
love, set against the backdrop of a postcataclysmic
city adrift from the mainland.
Strat, the forever young leader of The
Lost, has fallen for Raven, daughter of
Falco, the tyrannical, ruler of Obsidian.
There will be extra performance
during the Christmas and New Year
period, with matinees on 19 and 22
December, 27-29 December, plus 2, 3 &
5 January, plus a hugely popular Sing-
A-Long Performance on New Year’s Eve.
There is no show on 24 or 26 December.
CHRISTMAS AT ZSL LONDON ZOO
Until 1 January, visitors to ZSL
London Zoo – young and old alike – can
enjoy a magical after-dark experience:
Christmas at London Zoo. After the sun
has set – and all of the animals are
safely bedded down for the night, the
zoo transforms into a fairyland of over
100,000 twinkling Christmas lights, with
illuminated animal sculptures and
decorous umbrellas hanging from trees.
At the beginning of the trail, visitors
are surrounded by sparkle as the
pathway leads them through the Light
Vortex and into contrasting tunnels.
Along the festive-themed illuminated
trail, you can enjoy several cafés and
shops selling mulled wine, hot
chocolate, marshmallows and roasted
chestnuts. The route is approximately
one mile long and you can pause for a
while at the Mappin Terraces as the
Magic Mountain springs to life with a
blast of colour and playful projections.
There are plenty of hidden surprises
such as frosty snowflakes, shimmering
stars and gigantic baubles, as well as an
illuminated 11-metre-tall Sledge Tree,
made from 365 illuminated wooden
sledges that constantly changes colour.
The trail is open from 16.45 to 20.00,
and for those who wish to explore the
zoo and see the animals during the day
as well, a combined ticket is available
to stay on for the evening.
ENGLISH NATIONAL BALLET NUTCRACKER AT THE COLISEUM
Continuing its Christmas tradition of presenting a Nutcracker
production each year since 1950, English National Ballet’s
Nutcracker returns to the London Coliseum this festive season,
following sold out performances in 2016 and 2017.
On a sparkling Christmas Eve in a
frost-dusted Edwardian London, Clara
and her enchanted Nutcracker doll
discover a magical world, where she
battles with the Mouse King and meets a
handsome stranger. As the air grows
colder, Clara and her valiant Nutcracker
take a hot air balloon ride across
London to the glistening Land of Snow
where her adventure really begins.
Over 100 dancers and musicians
bring to life the popular Tchaikovsky
score featuring the Dance of the Sugar
Plum Fairy and Waltz of the Flowers,
performed live by English National Ballet
Philharmonic.
Based on a concept by Toer van
Schayk and Wayne Eagling, Nutcracker
has choreography by Wayne Eagling and
music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with
design by Peter Farmer and lighting by
David Richardson.
To coincide with Nutcracker, English
National Ballet will host a range of
workshops and events, aimed to provide
a gateway into the world of ballet.
Activities include on-stage workshops
for all ages, Live Drawing, Family
Events, and behind-the-scenes talks.
The Family Friendly performance of
Nutcracker is on Sunday 30 December
(14.00). Children under 5 may attend
this performance and up to two children
under 16 can go free with each full
paying adult.
Performances are from Thursday
13 December until Sunday 30 December.
Box Office: 020 7845 9300 or from
THRILLER LIVE CELEBRATES 10th
BIRTHDAY
Thriller Live has just celebrated its
4,000th West End performance with guest
stars led by Peter Andre performing in aid
of The Prince’s Trust, the start of a
year-long partnership with the charity.
The champagne is also on ice as the
concert spectacular, which showcases
Michael Jackson’s unforgettable music
and dazzling choreography, prepares to
celebrate 10 years as the Lyric Theatre’s
longest running success. The corks will
finally pop on 22 January when original
cast members and singers and dancers
from the show across the decade will
celebrate this amazing West End
milestone.
Shortly afterwards, on 9 April, at the
4,625th West End performance, Thriller
Live will overtake Miss Saigon to
become the 13th longest running
musical of all time. Thriller Live is unlike
other West End musicals. There is no
script or story, it is instead a eyepopping
celebration of Michael
Jackson’s music and dance legacy,
bringing to life on stage his distinctive
high-energy dancing and the pulsating
sound of many of pop’s greatest hits.
The show changes each year with
new numbers added, and features
specially created video footage and
effects and dazzling choreography by the
show’s award-winning director, Gary
Lloyd. Thriller Live first Moonwalked
into the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury
Avenue in 2009 and it holds the record
as the longest ever run of a show since
the theatre started entertaining the
capital in December 1888.
The show has now been seen by over
5 million people in 33 countries and
played over 6,500 performances
worldwide, never failing to get a standing
ovation! Thriller Live was originally
conceived and created by Adrian Grant, a
long time associate of Michael Jackson.
There are extra performances over the
Christmas and New Year period. For
tickets, telephone the Lyric Theatre Box
office on 0330 333 4812.
MUSIC AND COMEDY ON NEW
YEAR’S EVE WITH RAINER HERSCH
If you are visiting the UK over the
holidays and wondering how to celebrate
New Year’s Eve, there are few better ways
than with Rainer Hersch and his brilliant
Orkestra in the beautiful Cadogan Hall,
just off Sloane Square. The performance
will begin at 19.00 and finishes at
approximately 21.15.
Cadogan Hall is one of London’s finest,
with not a bad seat in the house but they
rarely see anything like this. Yes, it’s a
concert, but not as you know it. This is a
laugh-out-loud extravaganza of great
music, hilarious arrangements and hi jinx
for orchestra and audience. Over the last
three years, it has become the not-to-bemissed
start to the New Year.
Rainer Hersch (half German, half
English, which means he’d like to take
over the world but is too polite’) is a
conductor who has been delighting
audiences with his unique take on music
for over twenty years. He is a regular on
the BBC and appears as a guest
conductor with orchestras throughout the
world. But don’t expect him to wander on
and just wave his hands about because
Rainer is also a accomplished stand-up
comedian. In fact, that is what he used to
do before he concentrated on music,
headlining the Comedy Store and many
other clubs, not an orchestra in sight.
Since then, more than 30 million fans
around the world have viewed his clips on
YouTube and more than a few of them
make a the trip to Cadogan Hall to see
him in in the flesh.
With Rainer’s stand-up comedy there
will be everything from Tchaikovsky 1812
with audience cannons to music from the
movies – and guests. For 2018, those will
be recorder wiz, Piers Adams (virtuoso
baroque ensemble ‘Red Priest’) and star
Baritone, James Oldfield. It all adds up to
‘a guaranteed laugh every four bars’
(Scotsman) and ‘The funniest concert
you’ll ever see’ (Time Out). Well the
funniest, that is, until this time in 2019.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Andy Nyman (Tevye).
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Menier Chocolate Factory
One of the great experiences of my
theatre-going life was seeing Zero
Mostel as Tevye on Broadway in the
original 1964 production of Fiddler on
the Roof. He was unforgettable. But that
wasn’t always a given. Mostel had a
reputation for being unpredictable and
undisciplined. When the mood struck,
he would veer from Joseph Stein’s
brilliant book (based on stories by
Sholom Aleichem) preferring to indulge
in eccentric on-stage antics that did the
show no favours. Clearly, I’d got him on
a good night.
Three years later, I was at the opening
of Fiddler at Her Majesty’s Theatre in
London watching the great Israeli actor,
Chaim Topol commit grand larceny by
usurping the role of the struggling milk
man and, miracle of miracles, making it
his own. So much so that he was chosen
to repeat his performance on film.
Over time I have seen several Tevye’s
and though each possessed qualities
unique to themselves, none had the
gravitas, swagger and poignancy of its
two extraordinary career-defining
originals.
The latest exponent of this coveted
role is Andy Nyman who, although a tad
too young-looking and without the
necessary physical stature or gravitas of
his two famous predecessors, grows into
the part as the evening progresses – as,
indeed does Trevor Nunn’s intimate
revival, the first fifteen minutes of which,
on the opening night at any rate, began
tentatively. The jokes didn’t land and
neither did the show’s two best-known
songs, Tradition and If I Were A Rich
Man, the latter losing the assorted
poultry squawks associated with it (but
not actually in the text) and with the
‘daidle, deedle, daidle’ riff now
accentuating the sciatic pain Tevye
Judy Kuhn at Golde.
Photos: Johan Persson.
experiences hauling his cart, Mother
Courage-like, around the little village of
Anatevka, in which the story is set.
Fortunately, as the act progresses, so
does the central performance, abetted no
doubt, by Nunn’s inventive direction and
by the almost fool-proof brilliance of the
piece itself. What, after its shaky start,
I particularly admired in Nyman’s
performance was its lack of histrionics.
He plays it as an ensemble piece rather
than as a star vehicle, integrating
seamlessly with Judy Kuhn as Tevye’s
stoic wife Golde, Joshua Gannon as the
humble tailor Motel Kamzoil, Stuart
Clarke as Perchek the scholar, Dermot
Canavan as the butcher Lazar Wolf and
Molly Osborne as Tevye’s oldest
daughter Tzeitel.
The show’s original director/
choreographer was Jerome Robbins,
many of whose ideas and dance routines
have been reworked by Matt Cole for the
more modest space provided by the
Menier, and it works beautifully,
especially the difficult bottle dance
energetically performed by a group of
Anatefkan Russian youths who, soon, on
orders from the czar, will turn on
Anatevka’s Jews and force them out of
their homes and out of the country.
Nunn’s handling of the final moments
of this superbly crafted musical, with its
hauntingly beautiful score by Jerry Bock
speaks volumes about the dispossession
of Russian Jewry at the turn of the 19th
century, culminating for many, in the
holocaust.
Though it boasts a cast of just under
thirty, this is very much a chamber
production of an iconic Broadway
musical conceived both for a large stage
and a large theatre. The intimacy of
Nunn’s modest staging pays dividends
in the way it involves the audience in
Sholom Aleichem’s enduring characters,
their lives, their loves and their
struggles. It uplifts you but also breaks
your heart.
A TUDOR CHRISTMAS AT
SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL
The Tudor period was one of great
change and uncertainty but it produced
some of the finest British music ever
heard. The celebrated Dutch viol consort
L'Armonia Sonora has joined forces with
the world renowned Trinity Boys Choir to
produce a beautiful and atmospheric
programme of music for Advent and
Christmas from the 16th century. Works
by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Thomas
Weelkes and Orlando Gibbons for
voices, viols and organ are imaginatively
presented to create a Christmas concert
full of joy and wonder but unlikely to be
like any other in London this year.
Trinity Boys Choir travels extensively
and in 2018 has performed in China,
France, Germany, Holland, Italy and
Spain. The boys are well known for their
operatic appearances at Glyndebourne,
the Royal Opera House and English
National Opera, as well as abroad at the
Aix-en-Provence Festival and at
La Scala, Milan. In the world of Early
Music the choir has collaborated with
Sir John Eliot Gardiner on tours to
Germany, Italy and Spain and with Paul
McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort.
They are also in demand for studio work
and have appeared on the soundtracks
of numerous films including Fantastic
Beasts 1 and 2, The Nutcracker and the
Four Realms, and Mockingjay 1 and 2.
Trinity Boys Choir EIGHT made its
debut at the Utrecht Early Music Festival
in 2016 with L’Armonia Sonora to critical
acclaim. The eight boys include the
most experienced trebles and promising
young tenors and basses. They sing one
or two to a part and present their
programmes entirely from memory. This
December the choir is touring A Tudor
Christmas in Holland and the UK with
performances in the Tudor Chapel at
Ightham Mote and Southwark Cathedral.
The concert will be on Wednesday
19 December at 13.15. Admission is free
with a collection for Health Poverty
Action. Southwark Cathedral is a short
walk from London Bridge station.
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR AT
THE NATIONAL GALLERY
One of the world's best-known animal
paintings, Edwin Landseer's 'The
Monarch of the Glen', has returned to
the National Gallery for the first time
since 1851. The iconic work is displayed
alongside other paintings and drawings
by Landseer of Highland scenes,
showing how he developed his
distinctive approach to the
representation of the stag as hero.
A representation of the painting made
in 1966 by former Associate Artist
Sir Peter Blake also provides a living
artist’s response, highlighting 'The
Monarch of the Glen’s' enduring appeal.
Coinciding with Landseer’s The
Monarch of the Glen is a display of
Scottish artist Rachel Maclean’s 2012
film ‘The Lion and The Unicorn’ which
shines an irreverent light on Scottish-
English relationships. One of the most
sharply satirical artists in Britain today,
Maclean’s caustic and darkly comical
films look at how we shape collective
and individual identities. Her distinctive
Edwin Landseer's 'The Monarch of the Glen'.
style combines gaudy masks, grotesque
prostheses and elaborate scenography.
Also on display this Christmas and
New Year, in the Sainsbury Wing until
27 January, ‘Mantegna and Bellini’ tells
a tale of two artists and brothers-in-law,
a story of art, family, rivalry, and
personality. Andrea Mantegna’s brilliant
compositional innovation and Giovanni
Bellini’s atmospheric, natural landscapes
were groundbreaking – no one had seen
anything like it before.
Following their respective careers in
Padua and Venice, and Mantegna’s fame
as court painter to the powerful Gonzaga
family in nearby Mantua, ‘Mantegna and
Bellini’ is the first-ever exhibition to
explore the creative links between these
artists, an opportunity to see rare loans of
paintings and drawings from around the
world by two of the most influential artists
of the Renaissance.
Visitors can still enjoy highlights from
The Courtauld Gallery, including famous
works by Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec,
Renoir, Manet and Seurat alongside a
selection of Impressionist paintings from
the National Gallery’s own holdings. On
view until 20 January, Courtauld
Impressionists: From Manet to Cézanne
traces the development of Impressionist
and Post-Impressionist paintings through
a selection of over forty masterpieces.
These exhibitions will be closely
followed this spring by Sorolla: Spanish
Master of Light, the first UK exhibition of
Spain's Impressionist, Sorolla, in over a
century. Known as the 'master of light'
for his iridescent canvases, this is a rare
opportunity to see the most complete
exhibition of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida's
(1863–1923) paintings outside Spain.
From the vivid seascapes, garden
views, and bather scenes for which he is
most renowned, to portraits, landscapes
and genre scenes of Spanish life, the
exhibition features more than 60 works
spanning Sorolla's career – many of
which are travelling from private
collections and from afar.
SNOW WHITE AT THE LONDON
PALLADIUM
Qdos Entertainment’s production of
Snow White at the London Palladium
has opened a five week strictly limited
run which continues until 13 January.
Dawn French is Queen Dragonella with
Julian Clary as The Man in The Mirror,
Paul Zerdin as Muddles, Nigel Havers as
The Understudy, Gary Wilmot as Mrs
Nora Crumble, Vincent and Flavia as The
King and The Queen, Charlie Stemp as
Prince Harry of Hampstead and Danielle
Hope as Snow White.
Produced by the Olivier Award-winning
team behind last year’s Dick Whittington,
Snow White at the London Palladium is
directed by Michael Harrison, with
Gary Wilmot as Mrs Nora Crumble.
choreography by Karen Bruce, scenery
designed by Ian Westbrook, costumes
designed by Hugh Durrant and original
music by Gary Hind.
Two years ago, Qdos re-established
the tradition of large-scale, spectacular,
star-led pantomime at the London
Palladium with Cinderella, which played
to packed houses and critical acclaim.
Last year they followed that success with
Dick Whittington in which Elaine Paige,
Julian Clary and a host of other
household names sent themselves up
superbly (and hilariously) following in
the footsteps of the pantomime greats,
winning the first Oliver Award ever for a
pantomime production.
TRUE WEST
Vaudeville
Kit Harington jettisons his Jon Snow
persona from Game of Thrones and dons
seriously unflattering specs – and even
worse shorts – to play respectable
screen writer Austin in the late Sam
Shepard’s 1980 comedy drama set in
southern California where he’s
housesitting for his mother whilst she
holidays in Alaska. Married, Ivy League
educated, he is, apparently, the opposite
of his estranged older brother Lee
(Johnny Flynn) who turns up after an
extended period living in the desert and
thinks nothing of helping himself to the
contents of other people’s houses.
Yet each wants what the other seems to
have and as, over a game of golf, Lee
craftily persuades visiting Hollywood
producer Saul to option his own
improbable plot – and ditch Austin’s as a
result – the tables are turned.
Matthew Dunster’s otherwise enjoyable
production suffer slightly from awkward,
all too visible scene changes which not
only break the tension but also diminish
the effect of what should be (sight lines
permitting) one of the funniest moments
in this mildly satirical exposé of
Hollywood and the American dream.
But Harington and Flynn spar
convincingly as they irritate each other
past the point of physical violence, with
Flynn capturing the manipulative
unpredictability of drunken drifter Lee,
and Harington’s Austen losing control in
a manic spree involving too much booze
and a batch of pilfered toasters.
And when their mother (Madeleine
Potter) returns to find her plant-filled
home trashed by the brothers, the bright
fluorescent lights of the desert (in Jon
Bausor design) which beckon them look
as welcoming – and destructive – as fly
zappers in this study of sibling rivalry.
