THERE’S MORE TO US THAN MEETS THE EYE At the heart of the community Learning hub continues to grow The Lindisfarne Adult Learning Centre at Alnwick continues to blossom with a range of new courses, new services and established groups - all sharing a space at the heart of the community. Citizens Advice Northumberland is now based on the ground floor of the building and welcomes residents who want free, confidential and impartial advice on any issues affecting people’s lives, for example the team will also work with the Learning and Skills Service to support residents around the launch of Universal Credit in Northumberland. Michael Holliday, centre manager and education lead for young people and SEND said: “The goal is to help everyone find a way forward whatever problem they may face. “We are home to lots of groups here at Lindisfarne: Alnwick Playhouse, Community Choir, (20,000 voices); My Life Productions; Highland Dancing for kids; Pinpoint League; Boogie Bounce; Alnwick Harriers Running Group and Slimming World. “We can offer courses to match everyone’s needs. Our teams are ready to help. A rich ecology for explorers A group of enthusiastic learners have been gathering research for a national database as part of their Ecology of Northumberland course. “THIS COURSE IS FOR NATURE LOVERS AND ENTHUSIASTS WHO REALLY WANT TO ENGAGE WITH THE NATURAL WORLD AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.” The seven week programme began in the classroom moving on to a series of field trips to Kielder Wildwood, Cresswell on the coast and Ford Moss - exploring a different habitat each week. Learners get hands-on practical experience as they explore the environment, learning how to identify and record species. The data is then uploaded onto the Biological Records System based at the Hancock Museum in Newcastle. John Hartstone, biology lecturer said: “I wanted to introduce the learners to the amazing habitats of Northumberland. The course is a practical one and each student has collated research to be used to inform nature conservation.” The group has really embraced the first course and they are looking forward to progressing to a more detailed study of key habitats in the springtime. We’ll be exploring everything from rocky shores and dunes to mires and meadows. If you’re interested in Ecology courses or other hands on Science courses such as ‘Fast and Furious Physiology’, When things go wrong’ and ‘What makes plants tick’ please contact our Alnwick or Prudhoe Learning centre or enrol on 0345 600 6400 FEELING THE LEARNER LOVE IN BEDLINGTON Informative learner feedback is helping create a rich and varied timetable at the Adult Learning Centre on Jubilee Terrace, Bedlington. The centre, next to the library, is home to a dedicated Arts and Wellbeing space. Each Tuesday it transforms into a dressmaking studio, where students reclaim and upcycle fabrics, breathing new life into vintage clothing and finding new and exciting uses for fabric. On Wednesdays local artist Joanne McGarry enthuses and challenges her creative cohort to produce watercolours, oil paintings, charcoal sketches and pastels in her level 2 mixed media arts class. New to the studio on Thursdays, we’re enrolling now for a beginners pottery class which will offer the opportunity to produce hand-crafted pinch pots, tiles and bowls and learn techniques such as coiling, press moulding, slipcasting and glazing. The new classes sit along the well established languages programme which this year include: Introduction to French and Italian, Japanese and Spanish Culture and Conversation and for those pushed for time - a basic day intensive in French, Spanish and German. For those wanting to get back into the workforce Skills for Work Courses available in the spring and summer at Bedlington include: Health Care Assistant - Paediatric Support Level 3, Introduction to Childcare, Introduction to Customer Service and Retail; Food Hygiene - Award in Food Safety Level 2 and Functional Maths and English.
