HOW IT WORKS
To establish a Donor Advised Fund, you make
a minimum gift of $10,000+ to your fund at the
Cambridge Community Foundation for which
you receive an immediate income tax charitable
deduction. The most common assets used for gifts
are cash and appreciated securities that qualify
for long-term capital gains tax treatment.
DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
CCF is the local giving platform, supporting
our city’s shared prosperity, social equity,
and enduring cultural richness, with roots
that go a century deep.
Donors often take advantage of the tax benefits
of gifting long-term appreciated assets. The tax
on capital gains is avoided while you receive an
income tax charitable deduction. Other assets
may be used to establish a donor-advised fund,
including complex assets, which we will be happy
to discuss with you
HOW FUNDS ARE MANAGED
Donors select a Trustee bank for their DAF:
Cambridge Trust or US Trust/Bank of America.
DAFs are invested with the Foundation’s assets
for growth and impact. As a public charity,
administrative fees directly support the Cambridge
Community Foundation’s grantmaking and civic
leadership work. Investment fees are assessed
by the Trustee bank.
HOW YOUR GIFT HELPS
Establishing your Donor Advised Fund with the
Cambridge Community Foundation supports
Cambridge through the Foundation’s civic
leadership and grantmaking – as you support the
organizations you care about. Your DAF is an
investment for the future guided by your interests.
ACTING ON SHARED VALUES
For many donors, a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is
their preferred vehicle for giving. DAFs are highly
flexible, and you can use a Cambridge Community
Foundation DAF to fund organizations and causes
you care about in the greater Cambridge area,
nationally, and globally.
If you have experienced a financial event resulting
in increased tax liability, establishing a Donor
Advised Fund may help to reduce your tax liability
and provide a source for your charitable giving
that can be stretched over many years. A DAF
may be added to over time, and you can include
others in making recommendations from the fund.
Donor Advised Funds are a highly economical
alternative to a private foundation, offering the
advantages of a foundation without the cost.
Our Donor Advised Funds and our endowment
funds are part of the Cambridge Endowment –
an ongoing philanthropic resource dedicated to
nurturing organizations and communities. Private
foundations can work in conjunction with DAFs.
You can use your private foundation to establish
a Donor Advised Fund, or you can convert
your private foundation into a Donor Advised
Fund. The Cambridge Community Foundation’s
administrative capacity will reduce administrative
burden, so you can focus on grantmaking and
impact.
MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS
FROM YOUR FUND
Donors may make recommendations for grants
from their Donor Advised Fund to any qualified
501 (c)(3) organization.
Donors also choose a spending strategy for their
fund:
• Donor Advised Funds can be managed
under the Foundation’s spending policy which
preserves the long-term spending power of
the fund.
• Spending at the donor/advisors’
recommendation. In this case, the donor may
make recommendations of $250 or more for
funding. We work closely with donors who
want to put a long-term giving plan into place
using their donor advised fund, including
strategies for building funds and changing
grant timing.
• Grant recommendations may be attributed to
the Donor Advised Fund, to the donor, or may
be made anonymously.
Donors are welcome to join the Cambridge
Community Foundation in grantmaking and are
encouraged to participate in the Foundation’s
offerings: convenings, expert advice on nonprofits,
and confidential counsel on philanthropy.
We invite you to join us in providing tangible
support advancing the humanistic and social
values that build a brighter future in Cambridge
and around the world.
