DREAM AWAY...
Page-21
On Wednesday 17th October we launched the
Toyota Dream Car Competition with our Year 8
students. This involved a whole year assembly
where past examples were exhibited and the rules
of the competition elucidated. This was followed by
a viewing, at the front of the school, of the Toyota
C-HR crossover hybrid and the flagship Lexus LC
coupe. Very generously these were provided by
our business partners Jemca Toyota Croydon. Our
students were enthusiastic in their response to
seeing these pristine models and had the chance to
explore the design features and to sit in the driver’s
seat.
Last year the Art Department authored a scheme of work based on the competition nationally. This
enabled our students to produce work in lessons where the focus was on the features of automotive
design and to consider the future of vehicle production given issues of sustainability. Toyota have an
ambitious plan for reducing environmental impact and as part of their initiative have committed,
To go beyond zero environmental impact and achieve a net positive impact, Toyota has set itself six
challenges. All these challenges, whether in climate change or resource and water recycling, are beset
with difficulties, however we are committed to continuing toward the year 2050 with steady initiatives
in order to realize sustainable development together with society.
This year we are focusing on ‘mobility and sustainability’ and introducing Year 8 to the rapid changes
in technology which will mean that travel may look significantly different in the future. Our students
have engaged enthusiastically and generated interesting ideas such as vehicles that charge via plates
under the road surface (apparently this is being tested as we go to press!). We have also given a
focus to the ‘narrative’ within their final compositions and these will have to be referenced in their
application forms.
Before being sent off to the national
competition all work will be judged
internally as part of our local Jemca
Toyota award and winners will be
selected for each of our school houses
and overall school first, second and
third. In the new year we will be
holding the exhibition of finalists and
winners and dates and times will be
announced nearer the time.
