Christmas Term
2019
This front cover was designed by V. Syavavko (Year 7)
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER, MR P E MCCULLAGH
During Advent, we have used this as a time for us to reflect on the true meaning of the sea-
son. It has been a time of expectant waiting, hopeful anticipation and joyful preparation for
Christmas – Christ entering our world. It is the season of joy and a season of hope.
Joy was something we witnessed our Year 11 and Year 13 students experience during the sum-
mer as they opened their results envelopes back in August. There was much to celebrate in
terms of exam success: 81% of students achieving a Grade 4 and above in both English and
Mathematics at GCSE and sustained success at Key Stage 5. One of the things I have really
enjoyed this term has been working with our subject leaders in school. Listening to the enthusiastic
way they talk about their particular subjects leaves me in no doubt as to why our re-
sults are so strong – we have a passionate team of staff, hardworking students and supportive
parents/carers which are the key ingredients for success.
At school this term, we have been reflecting on whether our curriculum meets the needs of
an ever-changing world. We want to continue to commit to providing our students with the
necessary skills to achieve academic and spiritual growth so that they may truly thrive, both
socially and emotionally.

As a Catholic school we provide our students with a moral compass based on Catholic
Social Teaching that supports their growth and development. It is essential that our students
are encouraged to have enquiring minds, ask questions and form their own opinions. We are
blessed with close links with our parishes which allows our students to experience prayer,
worship, charity and social events.
As a faith school, we believe there is more to the purpose of education than producing
strong academic outcomes. Pope Francis wrote that “the mission of schools is to develop
a sense of truth, of what is good and beautiful”; therefore, it is of vital importance that our
community of students are given opportunities to develop their physical, moral and intellectual
talents. I hope that this newsletter will give you a flavour of what we are able to offer
at The John Fisher School. If your son has not done so already, I would challenge him to try
something new in 2020. Trying new things and stepping outside of our comfort zone can
help improve our levels of resilience and self-confidence.
Our remembrance events in November helped us remember and pray for those whom we
have lost. Many in our school community have suffered the pain of loss this year, and we
hold them all in our hearts and prayers.
Approaching Christmas, we heard some wonderful choral singing at ours services of lessons
and carols. It always astonishes me how much effort out students and staff in the Music
department put into the various events. From the Bonanza concert and various services to
the numerous performances in the community, I would personally like to thank all of those
involved. The Christmas break will offer the opportunity for some well-earned rest for all
who have given so much during the month of December.
We have enjoyed a rewarding year and I would like to acknowledge the work of staff and
governors in the impressive developments taking place across our school. We still strive to
provide an education which enables our students to grow into well-rounded, reflective, caring
and thoughtful young men ready to take their place in society.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family peace and joy this Christmas
and all the best for the New Year.
With very best wishes.

‘Rowvember’ 2019 with
OYSTER PARTNERSHIP
This year, we invited former JFA student, Sasza Bandiera, and his staff at Oyster Partnership to take part in
‘Rowvember’. Having raised over £2,000 last year after rowing 120,000m, we decide to set ourselves an even
bigger challenge.
Having dropped off a rowing machine to Oysters offices in London, we decided to try and row 60,060m per
rowing machine. We had three...! Ever hour, 60 men commit suicide worldwide, and we decided we would
support Movember in raising money to help this crisis.
With many staff raising awarness with rather horrendous moustaches and beards, we also managed to raise
just under £2,000 again. Well done to all the staff (there were 36!!) who took part in this brilliant charity
fiundraiser and especially to the many staff at Oyster who helped them hit their 60,060m target.

Karl Nova visits JFS
Page-7
When Ms Mellor told us that we had the chance to spend the day to do poetry with the 2018 CLiPPA
winner (that’s the Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award) who had won it for his debut collection
called Rhythm and Poetry, we thought that this was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. Little did we know
that Karl Nova wasn’t just a winner of an award but also an entertaining, humble man!
The day started off with Karl telling us a bit about himself so that we could understand his background. His
father is a lecturer who has studied at some very prestigious universities in Britain and the United States
– so you can imagine his reaction when Karl told him that he was going to be a poet. He also gave us little
anecdotes that gave the background to some of his poems which helped us to appreciate why he had
written them and the meaning behind them. RAP means Rhythm and Poetry. So simple yet so compelling.
The theme for National Poetry Day on 3rd October was truth. Karl told us we would be writing our own
slam/rap poetry based on this theme. We split into pairs and chose a topic we would focus on. We
decided to focus on ‘cheating’. After completing the poem from one point of view, Karl suggested that we
wrote the reply from the other person’s viewpoint. The effect was quite astounding (Ms Mellor seemed
blown away by our creativity)!
Not only did we perform it in front of the other students involved in the session, we then showcased our
work to Year 7.
We really enjoyed our day with Karl Nova as it allowed us to see poetry in a new light. Suddenly poetry is
interesting and no longer something we will dread studying.
Thank you Karl (and Ms Mellor).

it’s beginning to sound like
christmas.
This term has been wonderfully busy with lots of Music making!
Epilogues
Our three epilogues this term have allowed quiet and reflection, with the Matin Responsary and Psalm 23
being particularly special. Parents, students and staff are more than welcome to attend on the last Thursday
of the month at 4pm (next one in January).
Recitals
Many students have taken part in our recitals this term, showing a wide range of musical instruments and
talents. Well done to all the boys who have performed.
Choir out and about
The choir have been entertaining audiences in time for Christmas. Finn Dolce (year 10) writes: “We have
performed at the Purley View Nursing Home, St Nicholas Centre and Whitgift centre where we sang a
variety of Christmas tunes. We collected for the St Raphael Hospice and Lilly Pad appeal. However, one of
the highlights was a performance at the St Giles school, where the enjoyment from their pupils was audible
and they treated us in return with Jingle Bells complete with signing.”
Special thanks has to go to all the Music staff, boys and parents.

Christmas Bonanza!
Page-11
Our annual Christmas Bonanza was held on 5th December and was full of Christmas jumpers and festive
fun. There were also some more unusual instruments, including Kazoos. Michael Bridge (year 11) explains:
“The Christmas Bonanza this year was brilliant! The amount of effort put in by all of the clubs made this
concert the best one so far. The choir started it with a fantastic arrangement of Mary Poppins. This was
followed by a wide variety of groups including Stomp! and guitars. The second half was just as good with
creative arrangements for the Wind Band and a relaxing concerto by the string ensemble. My favourite
group that played was percussion – “All I want for Christmas” was spectacular. Watching the teachers dress
up for the 12 days was also a real treat.”
Carol Service
We are looking forward to finishing the term on a
high with the candlelit carol service. The boys have
been practISING hard and it looks to be a special,
festive occasion. We look forward to seeing you.
“Thank you so much to The John Fisher School
for being part of our carol Singing Day at the St
Nicholas Centre.
We hugely appreciate your support and hope all
the children enjoyed it!
I am thrilled to say that with the help of your
gorgeous singing we raised a fantastic £806.05!!
It costs £75 to provide one hour of expert nursing
care of our In-Patient Unit. Our team are there to
help patients with pain management, symptom
control and tailored palliative care if they choose
to spend their last days on our ward. Your support
means we could provide over 10 hours of care for
someone who needs us.”

Senior maths challenge
Page-13
The month of November has been a busy time
for the Maths department with pupils being
involved in competitions and workshops led by
the UK Maths Trust.
The Senior Maths Challenge was undertaken
by 32 of our A-Level Mathematicians. The paper
aims to “encourage mathematical reasoning,
precision of thought, and fluency in using basic
mathematical techniques to solve interesting
problems.” and is highly prized by all institutions.
Only 60% of participants receive any award and
we are very proud The following results:
1 Gold
7 Silver
15 Bronze
A special mention should go to Ben Evans who not only
was the Best Student in the school but also managed
to qualify for the Senior Kangaroo challenge which is a
further competition for the most elite students in the
country.
On the 22nd November four A-level students attended the UKMT Senior Team Challenge. This is a
competition, mainly attended by Independent Schools, designed to develop team work and resilience in
problem solving.
The school was represented by myself, Shaun B (Yr 12), Piotr B (Yr 12) and Daniel F-B (Yr 12). We were at a
disadvantage from the start as our arrival had been delayed by a fire alarm at school. However, we showed
great character and perseverance after this in the first “Group Round”. With limited time we managed
to attempt 7 out of 10 questions on topics ranging from co-ordinate geometry to problem solving with
algebra.
The second round was a mathematical “cross number”. One of the difficulties with the task was that it is
structured in such a way that the results to some questions are used for the questions to others, this is
made more difficult by the fact that the pairs can not communicate directly with each other (please see
below if you fancy a go at the 2018 Senior Cross Number). This was the most enjoyable task and apart from
a few errors, we completed the task in the allotted time.
The final round was the “shuttle” round where our pairs were given two problems each. One pair was given
the first problem and the next pair could not fully answer their part until the first answer was given, this all
needed to be completed in a strict time limit of 8 minutes. This was by far the hardest task and the extra
time pressure meant that mistakes were made which made it difficult for us to progress.
Overall, we were placed 17th which, in a very popular region, was a superb achievement. Moreover, we
got to practise and develop wider skills such as communication, leadership and determination.
B. Evans (Year 13)

Year 7 Maths Workshop: Dragons
and Magic hosted by Trinity School
Ten Year 8 students attended the dragons and magic maths
workshop, to encourage mathematical thinking, have fun
and make discoveries whilst solving puzzles. Students were
shown a variety of magic tricks which had mathematical
content. A magic trick was demonstrated and then the
students were provided with materials so that they could
try the tricks for themselves. They then explored the Maths
behind the trick, being shown advanced formulae to explain
how the tricks work.
The magic ring falling into a chain, throwing a knot in a
rope, and building small motors were some of the students’
greatest achievements.
Students were then shuffled into teams of four with the
other schools to complete a Dragon Quiz. A Dragon Quiz
is a team-relay contest, where teams compete to answer as
many questions as possible, in order, in the time allowed.
Answering questions correctly gives extra pieces of the
dragon, and the team with the longest dragon wins! (Must
have a head, tail and 4 legs!)

MAURICE REANEY V.C:
A LASTING LEGACY
The 11th November also saw the first remembrance ceremony at our new War Memorial, which was
officially opened earlier in the year. The memorial, paid for by the generous donations of Maurice Reaney,
was designed by a team of current A-Level History students and staff at The John Fisher School. It is
located outside the front of the school and also contains a plaque with the names of those former
students who gave their lives between 1939 and 1945. At 11am there was a service conducted by Father
James next to the memorial which was attended by a selection of staff, students and former students.
Maurice was an ex-student of The John Fisher School who served during the Second World War. He
survived the conflict and returned to civilian life in the late 1940s. As an ex-student he became an
active member of the Old-Boys Association in his later life. He sadly passed away at the age of 71 and
his family have donated his WWII military memorabilia to the school so that it can be viewed by the
present and future generations. The display is in the entrance lobby of the Sir David Lane Building and
we would invite all parents to view it at the next Parents Evening. In it you can see one of Maurice’s own
exercise books, his war medals and many other arterfacts from the war. The unveiling proved to be a
very poignant day. It was excellent to see the current students maintaining our school’s strong tradition
of remembrance and commemoration, by being so respectful and reflective throughout. Thank you to all
those students involved in the preperation and delivery of the service.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR
VISIT: MARCEL LADENHEIM
Page-21
On Friday 29th November Marcel Ladenheim visited the John Fisher School to speak to 175 GCSE
& A-Level History students from Years 7-13. Marcel was born in Paris in 1939. He was born to
Austrian parents, who had fled to Paris in 1938 after the Anschluss, Nazi Germany’s annexation of
Austria. The German Army invaded France in May 1940 and entered Paris on the 14th June 1940.
In May 1941 Marcel’s father was arrested by the French police, leaving his mother alone whilst
heavily pregnant and with two year old Marcel. Realising the desperate situation, she decided to
go into hiding with the children. If they had not gone into hiding they would have been arrested
in 1942 and sent to Velodrome D’Hiver. Unfortunately, this stressful situation led to Marcel’s
mother being hospitalised. The family who had been hiding Marcel realised how dangerous it was
for them to harbour Jews and they arranged for Marcel to be hidden by two sisters, Olga and
Esther Masoli. Marcel was hidden by these women for the duration of the war. Being five years old
he was unaware of the dangers that faced him. In fact, Marcel recalls being happy with the sisters
and enjoying glorious Christmas days with toy soldiers and toy cars. Marcel and his brother had
been split up when Marcel went to live with the Masoli sisters. He was reunited with him at the
end of the war. Marcel’s father was killed in Auschwitz, but his mother survived. However, after a
short period together Marcel’s mother was unable to care for her boys and in 1948 Marcel and his
brother moved to Manchester to live with their aunt.
Before the session Marcel had requested that
a member of staff asked the first question, in
case students didn’t have any questions or felt
too shy to ask. In the end we had to end the
session with some questions still unanswered
due the impressive levels of engagement from
each boy in the room. Marcel did stay back at
the end to answer some more questions, and
commented how honoured he was to have
had so many students personally thank him
and shake his hand.
He finished the day with a small group of A-level historians in which he gave a brief speech about
the warnings of extreme political views and the dangers of prejudice in our society. On leaving the
school he commented on how impressed he was with each student he had encountered and said
it was exactly schools like the JFS, and more importantly it’s students, that drives him to continue
to give monthly talks despite turning eighty earlier this year.
It was an extremely powerful, educational and valuable day for all the staff and students involved.
Mr Jackson – History Dept.

Black History Month
This year there was a range of Black History Month events at The John Fisher School.
Ms Tyrell, along with Mr Dende-Raji, Mr Sakhabuth, Ms Anderson all felt that there
was an opportunity to use a nationally renowned month such as BHM to raise the
profile of black people (past and present), who have contributed to the development
of the society we live in. Especially, the parts of history that are not prominent in the
curriculum.
Every Wednesday after school (bar the first
and half term), in the month of October had
an enlightening event taking place. On the
9th October, we screened a very popular
documentary called ‘The Alt History’, which
consists of four short series, namely: Black
British History We’re Not Taught in Schools,
A British Lynching, White-washing and A
Forgotten Regiment. The short documentary
briefly explored critical moments in Black British
History that we’re not taught in schools.
On the 16th October, we held the Black History workshops. We had three workshops taking
place simultaneously . We had a musical workshop, which was led by Mr Dixon where he
explored with the student’s musical melody from various parts of the world. Ms Anderson
led a workshop on creative writing, which encouraged students to use the Black British
history they have learnt to create their own poem and spoken word. Mr Sylvester-Bruce led a
workshop showing ‘Fire in Babylon’, depicting the story of the West Indies cricket team tour of
the world, with special focus on their time in the UK as a teamof black players
For the 30th October Ms Tyrell had arranged
with an organisation called Eastside to run
a Black History Heroes workshop for 30
students in each year groups This workshop
allowed our students to learn a little about
their life story and achievements and deepen
their understanding of Olaudah Equiano, using
creative drama and improvisation skills.
Additionally, Year 8B tutored by Mr Dixon
did an assembly for the whole of year 8’s for
Black History Month. They focussed on an
extraordinary game of professional football
that took place in May 1979, when an all-white
team took on a side comprised solely of black
players

Old boy Will Bull, came in to work with groups of students in Years 8. His
company, ‘And Beyond’, allows the students to think about the wider and
larger issues facing society. Working in teams, they create a presentation
on how they would address this issue. All the groups worked brillianlty,
and Will said, “ It was a real pleasure to come back to The John Fisher
School. The school still feels like it did when I left, and its great to see the
quality of student engagement is still as high as ever.”

Remembrance Day 2019
On Monday 11th November all staff and students fell silent at 11am to pay their respects to those
who have given their lives in conflict since 1914. Although the remembrance assemblies are a
regular fixture at JFS and have been for some time, this year saw a number of new additions to the
services and commemorations.
The whole school marked the occasion with a
morning service in the Sports Hall. Years 7, 8, 12
and 13 went first during period 1, followed by 9,
10 and 11 during period 2. The services were led
by the History Department, Father James, the
Head-Teacher, the Head-Boy, Mr Ford and the
choir, House-Captains and a volunteer reader
from each year group.
With 2019 marking one hundred years since
the Versailles Peace Treaty, which formally
ended the Great War, the spiritual theme of
this year’s commemoration was ‘Revenge and
Reconciliation’. The remembrance services were
based upon the following reading from the Bible:
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honourable in the sight
of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never
avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is
mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning
coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:17-21
‘Aspiring for ‘Nurturing Academic, young Cultural Catholic and gentlemen Sporting Excellence’
Aspiring for Academic, Cultural and Sporting Excellence’
Students were asked to consider the conflict from the defeated enemy’s side, rather
than the perspective of the victorious allies. They were read three diary extracts
from a German soldier of the Great War. They expressed, first hand, his views on
the excitement he felt when signing up in 1914, the patriotic duty that drove him
through the years of conflict and personal injury between 1915 and 1917 and finally
the feelings of desperation, waste and betrayal he felt during 1918 upon hearing of the
surrender whilst in hospital following a gas attack. This soldier was Lance Corporal
Adolf Hitler.
Page-31
Audible gasps from students in both
services demonstrated the surprise many
of them felt at sympathising with such a
notoriously evil person. The services then
went on to show how the Second World
War was linked to the First. It was then
discussed how Germany was punished
by the victorious allies with no serious
attempts at reconciliation in 1919. It was
shown how the Allies heaped “burning
coals” on the heads of the defeated through
economic, territorial and financial sanctions.
Students soon began to understand how
the decision to seek revenge in 1919 rather
than reconciliation, led to a short-term
peace but a far more destructive and evil
conflict in the long-term.
Comparisons were then made to post 1945 and how the Western Allies took a more
reconciliatory approach to the defeated German and Japanese nations, and the lasting friendship
and peace that has endured between the former enemies. The services then ended with a laying
of wreathes by House Captains, alongside the calling out of the names of the fallen JFS students
who gave their lives during the Second World War. Student commemorations were then concluded
with a two minute silence during period 3 which was accompanied with a collection of images of
participants from over twenty nations (on both sides) that saw service in the Great War.

Snapshot of the term
Well done to G. Hayden (Year
13) for being selected for Surrey
Colts who beat Hampshire 15-
5. He has really developed as a
player since joining the school in
Year 12.
Our Year 12 economists undertake a ninety
minute election debate in which they
are all representing a different political
party. They had to put accross their main
election policies, debating their merits
and articulating their own concerns about
other parties. This was exceptional and the
students demonstrated a very high level of
understanding and debating skills.
Students continue to excel in Art with Year 7 designing this year’s
school Christmas card, Year 8 getting ready for a compeitition
sponsored by one of our new partners, City Tiles and Bathrooms,
and Years 11 and 13 undertaking their PPE’s.
Two former students, Laurence
Hamer and Jon Cernuschi, have
set up their own business on the
Purley Way. Please do support
them and mention John Fisher
for preferntial rates!
Our wonderful parent
association (JFA) raised
just under £2,000 from
Christmas tree sales on
Saturday 7th December.
Thank you to all those
involved in organising this
event, and to those who
bought their tree from
them.
Well done to Mr.
Gamage who won
an award from Bath
University. This was
awarded for ‘Excellence
in Maths Teaching’ after
former student, Luke
Roberts, nominated him
as having the biggest
impact on his studies.
An outstanding
achievement.

The John Fisher School continues it lomg and
proud tradition of former students being
ordained. On 14th December, former students
John Howard and Dermott O’Gorman were
part of the Solemn Mass of Ordination to the
Diaconate. This service was held by the Right
Reverend Richard Moth, Bishop of Arundel
and Brighton.
The school continues to support our local
charities and here are some of our students
presenting a cheque for £750 to Wendy
from the South-East Cancer Centre. The
charity work closely with families and
victims of cancer, and offer support and
guidance to some of the more well known
cancer charities. Wendy explained that this
money raised from part of our mufti day
will help run the centre for one day. A very
worthy cause.
Students in Year 9 have been studying the text; The Yellow
Wallpaper. Here is a snap of some of them creating their
own scene from the book.
Year 7 enjoying a Zumba session on a
Monday morning as a reward for all the hard
work fundraising for the Zepra charity..

The JFS Memorial Garden 2020
The John Fisher School is to start work on the
new Memorial garden in early 2020. Funded by
donations from old boys, the council, grants and
Jemca, Toyota Croydon, this garden will offer a large
space for students, staff and our local community to
use for quiet reflection.
The garden was designed by local ecology and
sustainable drainage specialists and brings together
smells, plants and design from around the world.
The garden will also have plenty of outdoor seating
and a space which can be used as a classroom.
With space often at a premium in schools, we are
delighted to be using some of our space for an
outdoorclassroom and look forward to it’s opening
mid-2020.

JFS ALUMNI UPDATE
Congratulations to both Alex Dombrandt and Kieran
Treadwell who are both having excellent seasons at
Harlequins and Ulster respectively.
Alex continues to hit the headlines for his superb
performances in the Premiership with his name being touted
as a potential success to Billy V in the England No. 8 position!
Kieran was desperatley unlucky not to be selected in the
recent Ireland training squad but continues to start for
Ulster. In the most recent match between the two clubs,
Kieran came out on top but both should be very proud of
their performance.
Please support old boy James Taylor with his new project- a
community Saffron Farm. He is using crowdfunding to grow
his project and any help is gratefully received.

Well I have found an obituary notice for an Old Boy who used to have a desk at my right-hand side,
Kenneth Hugh Fea - we both left for university education in 1952 - he chose to study Astronomy, and
soon took positions such as at the London Planetarium - I visited his family in June1969 in London (on my
way to Turkey for two months - it turned out he was in hospital at the time) - he decided to emigrate to
New Zealand, saying there were fewer astronomers based in the Southern Hemisphere - and from on-line
tracking I found he passed at George Manning Lifecare in Christchurch New Zealand on Thursday March
21st, 2019 at 85, husband of the late Joan Bowman Williams, companion of the late Elizabeth Purvis, and
father of Nadine, Brett, Dane, Craig, Roxanne, Nyree and Kirrily. This was easy to track on-line because of
his unusual name.

Well done to Marine Dominic Graham who has passed his
French test with very high scores, meaning he is now an
official Royal Marine interpreter. We wish him well as he
continues his studies towards officer training.

DEAR JOHN FISHER...
Page-37
Dear Mr. Street,
We had 12 schools attending with most of them
bringing a full team of 40 pupils from years 3-6,
so there were approximately 480 children taking
part on the morning. With such a large number
we would not be able to hold this event at any of
our primary schools so we really do appreciate
the support of The John Fisher School hosting this
event annually at their playing fields.
The John Fisher Boys were amazing as usual,
allowing the whole competition to run smoothly.
We had a few children who had difficulties getting
around the course but the boys dealt with these
incidents efficiently. They were very kind and
considerate to the younger children, polite and
courteous to the adults and genuinely make such
a difference to the smooth running of the event -
they are a credit to The John Fisher School.
Regards

From Dermot Mooney, Headteacher at Margaret Roper Primary

“I thought it was terrific on Thursday morning. John Fisher boys
(who were officiating and assisted with the running of the event)
were brilliant - very kind to the children. It’s good of JFS to have us
every year.”
