Senior maths challengePage-13The month of November has been a busy timefor the Maths department with pupils beinginvolved in competitions and workshops led bythe UK Maths Trust.The Senior Maths Challenge was undertakenby 32 of our A-Level Mathematicians. The paperaims to “encourage mathematical reasoning,precision of thought, and fluency in using basicmathematical techniques to solve interestingproblems.” and is highly prized by all institutions.Only 60% of participants receive any award andwe are very proud The following results:1 Gold7 Silver15 BronzeA special mention should go to Ben Evans who not onlywas the Best Student in the school but also managedto qualify for the Senior Kangaroo challenge which is afurther competition for the most elite students in thecountry.On the 22nd November four A-level students attended the UKMT Senior Team Challenge. This is acompetition, mainly attended by Independent Schools, designed to develop team work and resilience inproblem solving.The school was represented by myself, Shaun B (Yr 12), Piotr B (Yr 12) and Daniel F-B (Yr 12). We were at adisadvantage from the start as our arrival had been delayed by a fire alarm at school. However, we showedgreat character and perseverance after this in the first “Group Round”. With limited time we managedto attempt 7 out of 10 questions on topics ranging from co-ordinate geometry to problem solving withalgebra.The second round was a mathematical “cross number”. One of the difficulties with the task was that it isstructured in such a way that the results to some questions are used for the questions to others, this ismade more difficult by the fact that the pairs can not communicate directly with each other (please seebelow if you fancy a go at the 2018 Senior Cross Number). This was the most enjoyable task and apart froma few errors, we completed the task in the allotted time.The final round was the “shuttle” round where our pairs were given two problems each. One pair was giventhe first problem and the next pair could not fully answer their part until the first answer was given, this allneeded to be completed in a strict time limit of 8 minutes. This was by far the hardest task and the extratime pressure meant that mistakes were made which made it difficult for us to progress.Overall, we were placed 17th which, in a very popular region, was a superb achievement. Moreover, wegot to practise and develop wider skills such as communication, leadership and determination.B.
