Year 7 Maths Workshop: Dragons

and Magic hosted by Trinity School

Ten Year 8 students attended the dragons and magic maths

workshop, to encourage mathematical thinking, have fun

and make discoveries whilst solving puzzles. Students were

shown a variety of magic tricks which had mathematical

content. A magic trick was demonstrated and then the

students were provided with materials so that they could

try the tricks for themselves. They then explored the Maths

behind the trick, being shown advanced formulae to explain

how the tricks work.

The magic ring falling into a chain, throwing a knot in a

rope, and building small motors were some of the students’

greatest achievements.

Students were then shuffled into teams of four with the

other schools to complete a Dragon Quiz. A Dragon Quiz

is a team-relay contest, where teams compete to answer as

many questions as possible, in order, in the time allowed.

Answering questions correctly gives extra pieces of the

dragon, and the team with the longest dragon wins! (Must

have a head, tail and 4 legs!)
