Holliston Students Take Aim at Cutting Prom Costs
Used Prom Dress Sale to take Place at
Holliston High January 12th
By J.D. O’Gara
Holliston’s 2019 Prom at the
State Room in Boston might
not take place until May 17th,
but you can be sure students
are beginning to shop for those
high-end dresses – which can be
expensive, especially on top of
the cost of tickets.
Holliston High School’s Student
Council, including Lauren
Salley, president, Aidan Krantz,
vice-president, Abha Athawale,
treasurer, and Emily Howland,
secretary, who are advised by
Mr. Donald Quindley, is hosting
an event on January 12th, from
12-4 p.m. at Holliston High
School, where anyone can buy/
sell prom dresses at a more affordable
price! In December, the
group accepted donated dresses
that will be given away for free at
the event, as well as dresses students
want to sell. Although the
group has already held the two
dress collection events, they’re
willing to take donations and
consignments until a week before
the event, about January 5th, so
that they have time to organize.
The young women thought
of the idea last spring, says Mr.
Quindley.
“We were just thinking, prom
can be so expensive,” says Lauren
Salley. “We were thinking
how awesome it would be if we
could get dresses (less expensively).
We emailed and texted
with other people and thought (a
prom dress sale) would be nice in
the community.”
“I’ve been to two proms,”
says Lauren. “ I went my sophomore
and my junior. For the
sophomore, I borrowed a dress,
but junior year I bought a dress,
had a hair and makeup appointment.
You could spend up to
$1,000!” Abha adds corsages
raise the price even further.
Aidan Krantz has attended
even more of the black-tie
events, having been to Holliston
events and out of town proms.
“For two, I borrowed a dress,”
she says. “If I had had an opportunity
to see the dresses laid
out, I would have had a better
time borrowing a dress, because
I didn’t want to spend money.”
For dresses on consignment,
prices will vary, says the students,
but they are putting a cap on
the price of $100 maximum.
Donated dresses will be free,
however there is a $5 cost of admission
to the event, which will
enter each attendee into raffles
for gift cards to local hair salons,
nail salons and other prom purveyors.
Prom affords the opportunity to deck out in glamourous gowns, but those dresses can be costly! Holliston
High School’s Student Council will hold a used prom dress sale on January 12th. Students can buy a gently
worn prom dress at a more affordable price, or they can recoup a few bucks from last year’s dress.
“Hopefully, the idea is, once
we have this, then we can keep
the event cycling year after year,”
says Lauren.
“We’re not trying to make
money off this. We’re trying to
help the girls in our community
not spend money and mostly to
make prom less expensive for everyone.”
The snow date for the event is
January 26th.
