Artistic Vigilante came across the talented Salem
Mcbunny and we were in total awe of his
self-portraits. At first we didn’t realize they were
self portraits because each photo looked different
and more magnificent than the previous. We have
been able to get Salem for an interview to talk
more about his art.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE – What is your full name
and how long have you been shooting for?
SALEM -My name is Salem McBunny and I have
been taking photographs since I was about 12
years old, however I have 5 years specializing in
the type of photography I do now and I like to
make conceptual photography.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE – We noticed that a lot of
your photography work has yourself as the muse;
mostly self portraits, can you explain why that is?
SALEM – Since I started with photography I used
to take pictures of myself, I think one of the main
factors was to show my style and the simple pleasure
of doing it. Time passed and I realized that doing
self-portrait became a therapeutic way to work
my emotions and personal self-knowledge, it also
helped me to improve my self-esteem and find the
love of my life in photography
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE – Your editing technique
is very unique and we notice you have a signature
highlighter effect on most of your portraits, can
you explain why and work us through the technicalities,
plugins and work flow of your process for
photographers who look up to you and want to
edit like you? Use this picture as an example.
SALEM – The editing process is one of the things
I enjoy doing the most when I’m working on a
photograph. Sometimes I have them in my mind
as of how the final result should be and other
times I love to explore in the editing. I particularly
like to change the lights that I put in the photographs
I feel that they became important to me
because I love things that shine and I realized that
when putting the illuminations into the photo, it
took a more pictorial touch and that is very fascinating.
finish with particular details, this is in general.
Sometimes I leave the photo a few days and then I
start editing it again, this is when I’m not satisfied
with the result.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE – What is it like being
a photographer in Mexico? Is it Lucrative? And
what are your challenges as a photographer in
Mexico?
SALEM – I think that personally I have come
across a little of everything, however I want to
highlight the most positive. I have met with the
support of many people who have been part of
my growth as a photographer and as a person
believe that many things depend on yourself and
the effort and dedication make us achieve what we
want.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE -What is the future of
photography for you?
SALEM – I do not know what my future is exactly,
but what I want to continue doing for the rest of
the year is to continue giving workshops on conceptual
photography and photography workshops
as emotional therapy, that is currently one of the
most fulfilling things to do in my life.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE – Can you end this interview
with something no one knows about you?
And Advise for photographers in mexico following
in your footsteps.
SALEM – I do not know if all the people know it
but all the time I am learning new things and not
only in relation to photography, I have also taken
some makeup courses, hairstyle classes, and even
learned how to do massages and it is curious but I
love learning everything I can. Effort and dedication
helps us get to the place where we want to be.
Whenever I start a photograph, the first steps are
usually some general corrections, from this I usually
work the skin, illuminations, eyes, colors, and
