Welcome From The Editor...
It gives me great pleassure to welcome you all to the first edition of
the new look Dunedin Chapter newsletter, in what is our Chapter's
25th Anniversary year. The aim of this quarterly publication is to
keep our members up to date with what is going on within the
Chapter, from who's who on the new commitee, to providing
information on upcoming Chapter events and ride-outs, and this
year, there is certainly plenty organised for the whole riding season.
Photos of events and rides that members have attended will also be
shared, so please email me your pictures, and let me know where
you have been racking up your H.O.G. miles!
This is a very special year for Dunedin Chapter - 25 years of riding as a family is something
celebrate! The Chapter is evolving and growing all the time and we want to continue to
move forward together, to grow our chapter pressence at H.O.G.® events and to ride as
one. We do that this year, in part, by increasing our Ladies of Harley events and
recognising our pillions more as part of our riding community.
The Chapter also has a fully functional media team who will be bringing you all the latest
Chapter news through various media channels. Our goal is to make all Chapter event and
ride-out information as easily accessible as possible to all our members. You will meet the
team within this issue who will highlight all the lines of Chapter communication that are now
available to you.
We will also bring you the latest news on 2019's Thunder In The Glens, all the latest,
including the Manager's Specials, from our sponsoring dealership Edinburgh Harley-
Davidson, and in this issue, a very special piece written by Greg Russell, with the help of
our Chapter Historian Stuart Caplan, on the 25 year history of our beloved Chapter and
how we have grown to be one of the largest in the country. I certainly hope you all enjoy
the read.
Ride safe!
Director's Welcome

From Our
Assistant Directors...
As we look forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Dunedin Chapter, we also find ourselves
reflect back on the previous 24 years. There have been lots of highs and a low’s in the Chapter, we were
very different ‘back in the day’ and we are lucky there are still a few founder members actively
participating in Chapter events to capture this history, before it’s all lost. But, we have to now look
forward, be adaptable and embrace change as we step into the future and the next 25 years!
We cannot afford to pause or dwell on the past, time catches us all and sometimes we forget that, but still
we talk about “what we used to do when I was a lad!” The world is a different, continuously changing
place, we have moved away from sending paper monthly newsletters/minutes, to sending emails using
email, internet or social media sites and all this is done on a smart phone or other small electronic device.
In fact, some would rather send a text message, than use the phone to make a call these days.
The bikes, our Harley-Davidson® V-twins we all love to ride are also brought up to date with subtle
changes: no keys required, led lights, bluetooth, even water-cooling! We will see the introduction of an
Electric H-D® and non-cruiser styles, all to encourage a broader profile of rider, encouraging ladies and
younger riders with these different types of motorcycle into the Harley-Davidson® family and in turn, our
Chapter.
It’s an exciting time to be part of the Dunedin Chapter! We all have the opportunity to take Dunedin
forward, to be the biggest best Chapter in the UK, so join us, get involved in whatever way you can, as
together we write the next 25 years history for Dunedin Chapter Scotland.
Watch this space...!
dunedin chapter scotland hog #9083

Ladies Of
Harley
What Does L.O.H. Mean...?
I’m sure if we studied the official HOG documentation, we’d get a clear and
concise explanation. However, to me, it is what we as a Chapter make it.
Personally, I don’t believe it means ‘Ladies Only’. I think it means Ladies
Inspired, Encouraged, Welcomed and Supported, Ladies Planned,
Organised, Executed and Delivered... It gives ladies a voice in what is still a
male dominated, and sometimes intimidating, envirionment.
But ladies in the biking world have come a very long way, and we’re very
fortunate in Dunedin Chapter in that, although our menfolk look scary, and
sometimes grumpy, that are in reality welcoming, encouraging and
supportive (I suppose they have been trained well by their ladies).
Being fairly new to the Chapter, I haven’t experienced the good works of
previous LOH Officers. Knowing Irene, Fiona, Lorraine and Linda, I’m
confident that they did many marvellous things. However, I have been
fortunate enough to meet the lovely National LOH Officers, Elaine
Shephard, Lorraine Seedhouse and Jo Green, and their commitment,
enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge and experience is inspiring.
These ladies and the LOH Officers for the other Chapters, who I met at the
training weekend in early November at HOG HQ, were full of enough ideas
and inspiring stories to help a newbie, like myself, to start to formulise ideas
for 2019.
Included in the year ahead for LOH is a fashion show, an International
Female Ride Day, another Sparkle Tour and a Twinkle Tour amongst many
other events which I hope you will enjoy as much as I have enjoyed LOH
events in the past.
