›Nothing is as constant 

as change.‹ 

The 2500-year-old wisdom of the 

philosopher Heraclitus is more relevant 

than ever. Structural change has 

profoundly changed the printing 

industry in recent years. 

Today, we find ourselves in a dynamic 

and extremely exciting environment, 

that continuously challanges printers 

and suppliers alike. Increasing costs, 

rising paper prices, intense competition 

and digitalization are just some of them. 

In this environment, every print shop 

develops its own strategies to optimize 

its production processes and to remain 

competitive. 

In addition to modern post press 

machines, digital applications are 

becoming more and more important 

for plant productivity. Automation technology 

and networked systems are 

often summarized under the term 

Industry 4.0 – which many companies 

in the printing industry have already 

implemented. 15 years ago, the first 

fully automatic post press system went 

into operation for an Austrian customer, 

equipped with numerous software 

modules. Since then, extensive interfaces, 

central order management, format 

adjustment, job tickets, data 

evaluation and service via remote 

maintenance are no longer a vision for 

our customers, but enhance productivity 

behind the largest and fastest presses 

in the world day by day. 

Flexibility and innovation are also represented 

in the projects that we present to 

you in this issue. Be it the realization of 

highly automated complete systems for 

one-man operation or the production 

of pre-glued books in digital printing.

Gotha Druck invests in 

RIMA-SYSTEM automation 

The family owned company with 380 employees led by the two brothers Jörg and 

Ralf Creutzburg has recently signed the order for a 96p GOSS Sunday 5000 press. 

With the press the offset printer increases the flexibility and production 

volume at its site in Günthersleben- Wechmar (Germany) significantly. 

Gotha Druck, looking for a post press 

solution to master the increased 

flexibility and volume, again decided 

on RIMA-SYSTEM. Especially the low 

maintenance costs as well as easy 

operation and ergonomics of the 

machines were crucial for the decision. 

From two folders with four deliveries 

each, the products are transported to 

a space-saving RS 840 trimming line. 

The trimmed products are then turned 

into stable stacks by two completely 

servo-controlled RS 36S lift stackers. 

Finally the stacks can be strapped 

before running into the pick-up-stations 

of two RS 400 high-speed palletizing 

robots which put the bundles safely and 

smoothly on pallets. 

Gotha Druck is a one of our longest 

standing partners being a satisfied 

customer for more than 25 years. 

A 48-page press and a second 32-page 

press are also equipped with trimmers, 

stackers and palletizing robots 

guaranteeing high productivity. The new 

system will be installed in late 2018.

press and post press automation 

The Press of Ohio was founded in 1985 

in Brimfield, OH, and was well known 

for high-caliber work in healthcare, 

education, biotech, and industrial 

vertical markets. In 2006, Wellspring 

Capital Management, bought D.B. Hess 

and The Press of Ohio creating Hess 

Print Solutions (HPS). In 2013, Hess 

Print Solutions was acquired by Bang 

Printing, a prominent Minnesota based 

provider of hardcover and softcover 

books. HPS and Bang Printing, along 

with numerous other acquisitions are 

held under the CJK Group, Inc. family of 

companies who deliver a broad spectrum 

of print communication products and 

related solutions to a diverse portfolio 

of global clients.

True to its founding principles, Hess Print Solutions remains a client-centric, 

solutions-focused and results-driven print communications partner to more than 

1,000 active customers. It’s all about ›Getting it done right, on time and on budget‹. 

Following this strategy, HPS invested in a high performance press and post press 

solution which, according to Chris Kurtzman, President / Owner of CJK Group, Inc, 

results in an even higher level of productivity. The new solution replaces older press 

and post press technology. On the press side, a highly automated Lithoman with 

75 inches web width was installed. The press delivers 64p products at 50.000 

copies/h, 32p products at 100.000 copies/h and 16p signatures at 200.000 cph. 

The RS 610 HS can apply a 

single strap or a double strap. 

The delivery table is motor 

driven and offers a buffer 

position. It has a dedicated 

pick-up position where the log 

is once again aligned before it 

is picked up by the robot.

Two-up, light paper and a 

central perforation – a truly 

challenging product for a log 

stacker. However, the versatile 

RS 610HS handles this task 

with the same log quality as if it 

was a standard magazine size. 

Automation for the 

whole system 

On the back of the press, a completely 

automated post press handles the huge 

amount of signatures. Depending on the 

job, the press output will be transformed 

either into logs or stacks. Optionally, 

the products can be head/foot trimmed. 

When running the closed head fold 

(4 x 16p) delivered on the tab delivery, 

the head/foot trim gives an output of up 

to 200.000 16p magazine size products. 

The complete product handling through 

conveying, trimming and stacking is 

in-line and automatic. At the end of the 

stacking lines two robots handle the 

palletizing process. They identify the 

type of production, automatically 

choose the right gripper (log or stack 

gripper) and automate the whole 

palletizing process, including empty and 

full pallet processing. The ergonomic 

post press layout offers an optimized 

workflow with fast access to the main 

stackers and the easy interaction of 

press and post press operators. Press 

and Post Press communicate through 

an intelligent interface which gives a 

consistent automation level for the 

whole system, including automatic 

speed synchronization, waste control, 

good copy count and order status. The 

high degree of proven automation and 

the real-time communication between 

the Lithoman and the Post Press are 

two key advantages of this solution. 

They guarantee best performance and 

productivity and support the most 

efficient operation of press and post 

press.

Bonifatius is a media company based in Paderborn (Germany), which was founded 

in 1869. It consists of a printhouse, a bookstore, a book editor and publisher of 

catholic oriented magazines. Sole shareholder is the Franz-von-Sales foundation in 

Paderborn. The name Bonifatius stands for value-oriented products and services, 

for high-quality designs and intelligent solutions, always supported by a high claim 

for sustainability. ›Just do good‹ is the company’s mission statement.

results in best accessibilty of the

operator.

Flexibility and quality 

The fully automatic palletizing 

system produces strapped logs 

for further processing in the 

bindery. To enhance the quality 

and durabilitly of the pallets, 

each layer is automatically 

equipped with carton slip sheets. 

To be in accordance with this statement 

Bonifatius has invested in new printing 

technology. The highly automated 

system consists of a 16p Rotoman 

press and a complete Post Press 

solution from RIMA-SYSTEM. The 

flexibility of the system reflects the 

diversity of products which are offered 

to the customers. Whether these are 

stacks of 3-side trimmed products, 

stacks of untrimmed products or 

strapped logs for finishing in the bindery 

– the configuration of the Post Press 

perfectly supports all these productions. 

A demanding challenge was the design 

of an accessible and ergonomic layout 

in the limited space available. The result 

is a layout setup alongside the machine 

which is only 4 m wide and perfectly 

accessible thanks to two overhead 

conveying systems. 

The Post Press is configured as follows: 

A3 and A4 delivery are merged before 

running to the central waste ejection 

system. A stream aligner and a squeeze 

roller guarantee a flat, perfectly aligned 

shingle stream which is transported by 

an overhead conveying system to the 

trimming line. A divert gate allows products 

to bypass the trimming line and 

continue directly to the compensating 

or log stacker. Set up in a straight line 

behind the trimming line the RS 610 log 

stacker is equipped with an automatic 

log palletizer and a pallet conveying 

system. Thanks to the two sections 

of overhead conveying connecting the 

folder delivery with the trimming line 

and to the log stacking area all relevant 

floor areas are freely accessible – an 

important factor for one-man operation. 

To further support minimum manning, 

the whole system has been equipped 

with the electric size adjustment on all 

machines. 

In case of needed support the 

RIMA-SYSTEM remote maintenance 

allows Bonifatius to have the 

equipment economically and quickly 

checked by RIMA-SYSTEM technicians, 

even after the warranty period.

Flexible automation

two indexing servo-driven forks, turn the 

shingled streams into perfect stacks. 

Bundles are further stabilized by directly 

coupled blocking and cross-strapping 

units before they are safely transported

Bluestar invests in Post Press 

Automation for their new 

Rotoman and existing presses. 

In addition to the complete post press 

system (pictured here), the leading Australian 

printer is also updating the log 

stacking and palletizing capacity behind 

two of their existing presses. 

With different log stackers already on 

site they could perfectly evaluate what 

would work best for them. Unique log 

quality, ease of operation and great 

reliability have been the main reasons 

to standardize all log stacking with the 

RIMA-SYSTEM RS 610 HS platform. In 

total, Bluestar will then be operating five 

fully automatic RS 610 HS log stackers 

behind their M600, M850 and three 

Rotoman presses. 

To further optimize the post press

Perfect quality for the bindery 

The ST 4000 DGT is a new generation 

of digital log collators. With the 

integrated code-reader it identifies print 

sequences (e.g. the signatures of a 

complete book) and initiates the 

separation process of each log 

according to the last signature of the 

last book in a log. This allows a predefined 

number of complete books to 

be collected in a log. With the integrated 

gluing unit these can even be pre-glued

Strong partnership 



The installation is continuing a successful partnership which has started already 

in 2007 with the delivery of a Post Press system behind a Zirkon 8p press. In the 

following years Baumann installed complete solutions from RIMA-SYSTEM behind 

a Lithoman IIIS with 40p (2008) and a Lithoman IV with 64p (2011). In addition the 

existing post press line of a different supplier was optimized behind an 8p-Octoman 

press (2012). In the finishing department Baumann decided to cooperate for a 

crane palletizing solution with the Post Press supplier from Düsseldorf.
