There is perhaps no place in the United States
of the same population as Walsenburg where
so much and such a diversity of foreign speech
is heard as in this small town. Many who
speak English principally speak a tainted
idiom. The Italian is perhaps more generally
heard on our streets than any other foreign
tongue, and Slavonian is frequently heard during
the last few years.
The Scenic Highway
of Legends
The heart of Spanish Peaks Country,
is, of course, the twin mountains rising
up out of the plains. They have been
known by many names, from the Wahatollas
(Native American for ‘Breasts of
the Earth’) to Los Cumbres Españolas,
to today’s Spanish Peaks.
Circling around and through the
peaks is the Scenic Highway of Legends,
a Colorado Byway.
This gorgeous drive affords stunning
views of the mountains as you pass
through pine and aspen forests, open
meadows, tight gaps through natural
stone walls, high mountain lakes, quaint
villages and finally out to the sweeping
vistas of the eastern plains.
The drive looks remarkably different
depending whether you start from the
north or south end, so try driving it both
ways!
Don’t forget the extra leg going over
Cordova Pass to Aguilar. Be sure to
allow at least two hours of drive time,
but you’ll probably be tempted to linger
longer.

Bob Kennemer, director
director@franciscofort.org
“This is paradise enough for me!”
according to Col. John M. Francisco
upon arrival in the upper Cuchara Valley
in Huerfano County in 1862. He and
Henry Daigre built a fortified adobe fort
with central plaza, and the town of La
Veta grew up next to it. The eleven room
structure, and associated historic
buildings such as the old Ritter
Schoolhouse, a saloon, and blacksmith
shop, now house the collection of the
