Dual Enrollment (DE) at Southside Virginia Community College is dedicated to the belief that all citizens should be given an opportunity to acquire an
educational foundation that develops and extends their skills and knowledge. The college’s goal is to provide diverse instructional programs ranging
from developmental studies to associate degree curricula in academic, technical / vocational, lifelong education, and workforce development. Through
various activities, to include distance learning, students will also have the opportunity to develop their roles and responsibilities as participants in a
changing society.Our mission is deeply rooted in the belief that educational access should be available to all who seek it.
One such example of access for high school students is Dual
Enrollment. This VCCS program is designed to give high
school students a head start on their future by experiencing
college-level work and earning college credit before graduating
from high school. Using qualified instructors and a rigorous
curriculum, students leave high school with a college experience and the skills
and knowledge necessary to be competitive in today’s workforce.
In 2018 alone, high school students across our 4,200 square mile service
region earned a total of 287 Associates Degrees in Arts & Sciences, 120
General Studies Certificates, and 300 Career Studies Certificates in fields
such as Welding, Automotive Diagnostics and Tune-Up, Nurse Aide, and High
Performance Technology.
What is Dual Enrollment?
It is a unique opportunity for high school juniors and seniors (freshman and
sophomores may be considered) to start their collegiate and professional
careers by earning college credit while they are still in high school.
• DE credit earned in academic courses will transfer to most 4-year
Virginia colleges and universities.
• DE credit earned in CTE courses will transfer to SVCC and
institutions that have articulation agreements with the college.
• Classes are offered to students in traditional academic disciplines,
as well as in Career and Technical Education fields.
• Most DE classes are held at a student’s home high school or technical
center but many are held at one of our SVCC sites.

Dual Enrollment?
1. Makes access to a college degree more affordable because in
most cases tuition is paid by the school divisions.
2. Provides valuable experience towards possible career fields of
interest.
3. Prepares students for college or a career.
4. Provides the knowledge and skills necessary to be competitive in
today’s workforce.
