set up in 2010 under Dr. Kutty’s
Healthcare, Matria Hospital offers
every feature that ensures women
have a truly pleasant experience. The
idea is to make pregnant mothers
feel at home. They can request for
a particular doctor. What is more,
spouses and family members are
encouraged to stay with the mothers-to-be
all through and be present
in the labour rooms so they can be
actively involved in the birthing
process. Moms-to-be are allowed to
choose their own birthing position.
“We make this possible because,
first, it offers great mental support
and relief to the person who is in
labour. These are labour suites with
utmost privacy unlike the spaces
separated by curtains that one may

Matria Hospital has deluxe and
premium suites with soothing décor,
recliners, a rocking chair, a private
shower and more. As per practices
followed in the hospital, expectant
mothers are not shifted to labour
rooms at the first sign of labour. Two
labour suites are kept ready for taking
in expectant mothers at any time and
are equipped with imported ‘Hill
Rom Affinity 4 Birthing Bed’ from
the USA, which allows mothers to lie
down comfortably in a particular position
they like in the labour rooms.
Should there be a requirement
from other pregnancy case when
both suites are engaged, the hospital
is equipped to handle such a situation
too. “We monitor the initial
stages of labour in the individual’s
room so that expectant mothers do
not come under pressure for having
spent a prolonged time in labour.
They can spend that time with their
kin. Carrying mothers are shifted to
labour suites only when they enter
active phase of labour,” she adds.
Moms-to-be can opt for labour
analgesia or epidural analgesia to
undergo painless labour. “Matria
has the honour of having carried out
the maximum number of epidural
analgesia procedures successfully in
Kerala. Close to 85 per cent moms
have chosen analgesia,” she says.
Before discharge, a team of hospital
staff visit the mom and child and
give them a surprise celebration with
a small cake cutting and capturing
photographs of the moment. Following
discharge, a nurse will see off the
mother and child till the vehicle.
Matria Hospital recommends that
expectant mothers start periodic
check-ups following a positive Urine
Pregnancy Test (UPT). The hospital
is equipped with physicians, radiologists,
anaesthetists, neonatologists
and paediatricians to deal with any
complications during the gestation
and postnatal periods. It has
a well-appointed operation theatre
for gynaecological, laparoscopic and
operative surgeries with sophisticated
equipment. It also has facility to conduct
hysterectomy using laparoscopy.
The facility has an Obstetrical
Ultrasound Unit (OUU) to analyse
foetal development. The hospital
also has an NICU with a dedicated
team of neonatologists and trained
nurses on call to handle premature
deliveries and other emergencies.
