Green Surrounds
Upgrading of the green surrounds throughout the course.
On my first visit to the course what struck me was the very basic shape, poor quality of turf
and height of cut on the green surrounds. This is a major factor in A) the perceived quality of
the golf course. B) the aesthe6cs of the green site and C) the playability of the hole ,
especially shot making around the greensite.
The surrounds are very dated and of very poor quality and an upgrade (modernisa6on) of
the surrounds would be the single most drama6c way to improve the golfing experience of
playing the Killeen course..
Currently, a shot missing the green is held up in long, mostly indigenous, coarse , weedy
quality grasses .. this is very much limi6ng the choice of recovery shot to the green surface.
I would propose that the green surrounds are reshaped throughout the course, this will also
involve installing drains into the base of the swales. Several surrounds sit very wet during
inclement weather and the introduc6on of shape and grade will also help to control water
movement , keeping surfaces dry and playable for longer.
Introducing shape and contour to the surrounds , coupled with dryer condi6ons and shorter
height of cut, leads to very interes6ng and varied shot making and recovery op6ons. At
present , a shot missing the green will be held up on a slope off the green, normally in semirough
height cut and laying poorly. Shot making op6ons are limited to chipping the ball up in
the air to carry over the damp and rough surrounds, onto the pujng surface. a difficult shot
for many a golfer to play.
