While online shopping has
made finding the right item at
the best price easier than ever,
the era of the flea market still
marches on, even right here in
Mokena.
From jewelry to collectables,
from makeup and
clothing to toys, there was
something for everyone at the
Indoor Flea Market Sunday,
Jan. 13. Hosted by The Mokena
Community Park District
at The Oaks Recreation Center,
the long-running event offered
local residents a chance
to find some hidden treasure in
a comfortable climate. More
than 50 vendors pre-registered
for the event, and an estimated
200 people were in attendance.
Rebecca Phetteplace, the
recreation supervisor of special
events, noted that while
this year’s event was smaller
than in years past, the checkin,
set-up and flow of the event
was much smoother.
“I don’t know if it was because
of more experienced
vendors who had been here in
years past, but everyone was
ready to go. It made things
easy,” Phetteplace said.
Six-year-old Jessica Severns
of Mokena was at the flea
market with her grandmother
for what was supposed to be a
quick browse. But that browsing
quickly turned into a shopping
spree for the excited girl.
Inside her new Minnie Mouse
stroller were just some of the
gems she had found, including
two Minnie Mouse dolls, Lalaloopsy
toys and even a back
scratcher for her mom.
“I’ve hit the jackpot,”
Severns said with a giant grin
on her face.
Being able to make connections
with the buyers at
flea markets is something that
many vendors enjoy most. For
Jessica Severns, 6, of Mokena, says she “hit the jackpot”
with her flea market finds, like this Minnie Mouse stroller,
during Mokena Community Park District’s Indoor Flea
Market at The Oaks Recreation Center Sunday, Jan. 13.
Ron Kosary, a vendor from
Oak Forest who sells mostly
online, flea markets offer an
opportunity to engage with
buyers to create a larger clientele.
Kosary is known for
selling jewelry and toys, but
his hot sellers on that day were
his games and vinyl records,
which he sold out of.
“I like to get out before the
big flea markets start opening
up. I come out to flea markets
to socialize and talk to people
who like the same thing. It’s
just a different type of atmosphere,”
Kosary said. “Plus,
I have a good opportunity to
get some good finds before the
market opens.”
Next to Kosary’s booth was
Bob Wunderlich, a Frankfort
resident who has been both
a buyer and seller for more
than five years. Wunderlich’s
booth featured a variety of
toys, including some boxed
Star Wars collectables. While
he admitted he does like the
outdoor flea market more than
being inside, Wunderlich is
just grateful to connect with
people who have similar interests,
and even those that don’t.
“I like dealing with and
talking to people. I enjoy mixing
with people,” said Wunderlich.
“I see a lot of people
who I know at these markets
that are all here to do the same
thing. They’re my friends and
neighbors … It just shows the
community we have.”
The Mokena Community
Park District will host its next
flea market during the Farm
and Barn Fest this summer.
