Australia’s newest cellar door and café at Lilyvale Should it be claimed that Australia’s newest restaurant is in Lilyvale near Meringandan West, it might be difficult to justify. Eating houses in the big cities open and close regularly. But it is more certain that Lilyvale has Australia’s newest cellar door and café. It is known as Rosalie House Cellar Door and Café, and it has been doing a roaring trade since it was opened on October 17. It was established by Doyle Thompson and his wife Vicki and family to complement a small vineyard they had planted some years ago. Mr Thompson said since opening day, staff have been run off their feet, serving up to 200 a day on weekends and 30 for lunch and 30 for dinner weekdays. They say there are already repeat customers. The Thompsons bought a five acre block on Lavenders Road in 1992, and since then he and Vicki have had stints running hotels, three years at the Farmers Arms at Cabarlah, a year at Pioneer Arms at Goombungee, and then some time at Rowena, west of Moree in NSW. Their land at Lilyvale included a farm home that had been named Rosalie House and that name has been used for their new business. The Thompsons moved an old railway workers cottage from Mort Street in Toowoomba onto the property. It was renovated, a wide verandah was added, a commercial kitchen built, and lawns established for outdoor dining. New Zealander Stacey Conner was appointed chef. She had worked for restaurateur Sean Connolly at the casino in Auckland and also Adelaide. Connolly also has Morrisons Restaurant in Sydney. After a year working in Dubai, Stacey moved to Highfields where her partner works, and his family EVERYDAY SCIENCE with JAMES McKAY Sea levels rise as planet warms According to the Australian Academy of Science average sea level has risen by over 20cm since 1880, and continues to rise at about 3mm a year. Over the past century sea rise has been measured by tidal gauges found in various locations around the world. It is important to look at the combined averages of all these gauges because sea level does not rise uniformly across the planet due to tides, ocean currents, influx of fresh water, and tectonic effects. Since 1993 we have used satellites to measure the height of the ocean surface. Satellite altimetry is combined with tidal gauges to give us a more accurate picture of global sea level rise. Geology also tells us information about sea level from last century, and also tells us what sea levels were during the ice ages and the warmer periods in between. According to NASA, the current sea level rise is caused by anthropogenic (human induced) global warming. As we add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels we enhance the earth’s natural greenhouse (known as the ‘greenhouse effect’) which makes the planet heat up. Water from melting ice sheets and glaciers flows into the ocean, and seawater expands when it warms. These combined factors result in sea level rise. 2018 was the third hottest year on record for Australia, according to the latest Bureau of Meteorology data. The BOM Annual Climate Statement confirms that mean temperature was the third highest on record (1.14°C above average) and mean maximum temperature was the second highest on record (1.55°C above average). Climate councillor and climate scientist, Professor Will Steffen said the latest data from BOM come as no surprise. This report estimates that sea level rise will directly cost the US economy $118 billion by 2100, and says that $1 trillion worth of coastal real estate in the USA is under threat from both sea level rise and increasing storm severity. If all the world’s glaciers and the polar ice caps melted, scientists estimate that sea level rise would be about 65m (213 feet). They were married on Saturday, November 8, 1958, at St Luke’s, Anglican Church, Toowoomba. The day before their wedding a huge hail storm struck the city, leaving flooding and a trail of damage.
