4 | January 24, 2019 | The winnetka Current NEWS winnetkacurrent.com Growing interest turns annual Carlson Event into open house Raises awareness for grants that fund new learning programs at D36 Libby Elliott Freelance Reporter When the Winnetka Public Schools Foundation’s current co-chairs, Kim Ronan and Megan Panje-Wilson, sat down last fall to plan the nonprofit organization’s annual Carlson Event, they realized they had a problem, albeit a good problem. The Carlson Event is an evening cocktail party — held roughly one month before the WPSF’s annual February Phone-A-Thon fundraising drive — that traditionally takes place in an elegant Winnetka home. But with attendance at the event steadily increasing over the years, the Carlson Event had become too large to contain in a private living room. “We needed a bigger space,” Ronan said. “We wanted to seize on the growing interest and make this more of a showcase than a traditional lecture or party.” Paid for with money bequeathed to the foundation by longstanding D36 educator, Charlotte Carlson, after her death in 2002, the Carlson Event exists to raise community awareness of the annual WPSFfunded teacher grants that bring D36 students the kind of new, cutting-edge learning programs that are typically beyond the reach of most tax-based, public school budgets. Last year, the WPSF dispersed more than $100,000 in locally-raised funds to pilot innovative, incubator-type grants tied to experiential teaching and learning, enabling D36 teachers to foster growth and creativity in the classroom. To accommodate a larger crowd, Ronan, Panje- Wilson and a dedicated 35-member team of WPSF parent volunteers, relocated their 2019 gathering to the Winnetka Community House, welcoming 150- plus attendees Thursday, Jan. 17, to a Carlson Event “reboot” and transforming what was once an understated cocktail party into a boisterous, multigenerational open house. In addition to a keynote presentation by worldrenowned educational design consultant, Trung Le, this year’s Carlson Event featured multiple interactive display stations, where members of the D36 community, including students, teachers and administrators, could see WPSF’s teacher grants in action. “I donate to WPSF every year, but it’s nice to finally see where the money goes,” said Winnetka resident Hilary Fedorinchik, as she tested Crow Island third-graders demonstrate their school’s new multi-use classroom furniture at the WPSF’s annual Carlson Event Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Winnetka Community House.
