Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Maddie Michiels
The New Trier senior is a
captain on the cheerleading
squad
When did you start
cheering and why?
I started cheerleading
the summer going into
freshman year. Cheerleading
always had a special
place in my heart because
I enjoy sharing my spirit
for the school, I love doing
stunts, and performing
the dances. I studied
classical ballet at Ruth
Page and after I suffered
an injury, this was a way
I could still dance and be
athletic. Also, my mom
was a cheerleader and I
always wanted to be a
cheerleader.
What’s your favorite
part about cheering?
My favorite part about
cheering is that moment,
right after you hit the stunt
perfectly, it gives you this
rush of adrenaline and you
have this instant team moment
of ‘We did it!’
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
That I’m shy.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would it
be and why?
Italy. It looks beautiful,
and my mom’s family is
from there. And the food.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier?
Performing at the Pep
rally for homecoming and
receiving wonderful praise
from my teachers and the
students. Going to the
dances with my friends
and having a wonderful
time.
Do you have any pet
peeves?
I cannot stand hearing
someone eat in a quiet
room. It doesn’t matter if
their mouth is closed I can
still hear it.
What’s the best advice
you’ve ever gotten
and who was it from?
Whenever I feel like giving
up or something isn’t
going as planned, I remind
myself to “suck it up, and
you got it.” My mom says
that because sometimes I
may feel like we didn’t do
something as well as we
could have or I’m feeling
overwhelmed and need a
boost.
What’s your favorite
restaurant and what
do you get there?
My favorite restaurant is
Topo Gigio. I get the same
dish every single time I go,
it’s called the Spaghetti
con le Polpette. It’s Spaghetti
with a Bolognese
sauce with meatballs. It’s
the most amazing food.
What’s your guilty
pleasure?
Photo submitted
Goat cheese with cranberry
or Brie. Love these.
If you could have
dinner with three
people who would
they be and why?
If I could have dinner
with three people it would
be Ariana Grande - she is
so talented, Carmela Turano
(my grandmother who
died from ovarian cancer
before I was born) and my
mom (Andreana Turano).
I think that we would have
a great time laughing and
telling stories. I would
love to meet my grandmother
she sounds wonderful
and everyone says
I remind them of her, and
my mom because I know
she’d like to have another
dinner with her mom too.
