Caravel Autism Health opens clinic in Orland Park A new opportunity for children with autism to lead independent, happy lives and connect with the world is now available in Chicago’s south suburbs. Caravel Autism Health has opened its new clinic, located at 15255 94th Ave., Suite 400, in Orland Park. Melanie Rickert is the clinic director for the Orland Park Clinic. The new clinic location is to offer diagnostic evaluations and autism treatment for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Most of Caravel Autism Health’s individualized treatment takes place in the home in the child’s natural environment. Families interested in learning more about treatment can reach Client Intake Coordinator Sarah Kerbel at (847) 423-0880. Caravel Autism Health uses a team of experienced clinicians to implement each child’s customized treatment plan. The treatment plan is individualized for the child and family’s needs, but typically includes communication, language, socialization, play and daily living skills goals. Most major health insurance plans will cover this evidence-based treatment. Rickert has years of experience in the autism field, working as a director with another provider, a boardcertified behavior analyst, and as a director of programs. Melanie earned her master’s degree in clinical psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, her bachelor’s degree in communication disorders from Saint Xavier University, and her BCBA credential in 2011. Diagnostic evaluations will be provided by Mike Mihajlovic, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist with a specialization in child and adolescent psychology. “Dr. Mike,” as he is known to his clients across the Chicago area, has devoted his training and clinical practice to the assessment and treatment of ASD. His natural ability to put children and families at ease creates a welcoming environment for the diagnostic evaluation, which generally takes approximately two hours. Darvin announces winners of anniversary contest While Lisa Kmak, of Orland Park, was shopping with her mother at Darvin Furniture, 15400 La Grange Road in Orland Park, she says she saw the entry forms for the 98th Anniversary Furniture Giveaway and took a minute to fill one out and place it into the drop box. That decision paid off, when she recently got the call that she had won a $2,079 Fairmont Designs sofa, part of more than $189,000 in furniture prizes Darvin allocated for its annual anniversary celebration. The prizes for the contest included entertainment sets, dining sets, bedroom sets, sofas, china cabinets, mattresses and more. opprairie.com NEWS the orland park prairie | January 24, 2019 | 7 Homeowner is hospitalized following residential fire on 84th Avenue Bill Jones, Editor A residential fire in Orland Park reportedly left the homeowner in critical condition, as two other members of his family also were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. Firefighters were called around 4:50 p.m. Jan. 15 to a two-story, From Jan. 15 split-level home in the 14200 block of 84th Avenue, according to a press release issued the same day by Orland Fire Protection District spokesperson Ray Hanania. They arrived to find “heavy smoke,” he wrote. One resident, the family’s son, was outside the home when firefighters arrived and directed them to his mother and father, both in their 90s, still inside the home, Hanania wrote. Firefighters reportedly used a landline, entered the home and rescued both people from inside the building. All three were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, but the father was in critical condition and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for continued treatment, according to Hanania. According to Kate Eller, director of public affairs and marketing operations for the hospital, the man was in fair condition as of Monday, Jan. 21. A full still alarm was called for the fire, and Orland received assistance from eight local fire departments and districts. From Jan. 18 Woman from Orland Park sustains lifethreatening injuries in I-294 crash Bill Jones, Editor A 30-year-old woman from Orland Park reportedly was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following a crash with a semitruck on Interstate 294 near Glenview. The woman was driving a Toyota SUV southbound on I-294 near Willow Road at 2:58 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the rear of a Volvo tractor and Hyundai trailer that was stopped with its emergency lights activated in the striped gore area, according to a press release issued the same day by Illinois State Police. Flight for Life was called to transport the woman to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge because of her “life-threatening injuries,” police said. The woman was in stable condition as of Sunday, Jan. 20, according to Jaimie Oh, regional manager of public affairs for the hospital. The driver of the semitruck — a 41-yearold man from Plainfield — reportedly was not injured. The driver of the SUV was cited for improper lane usage, according to Illinois State Trooper Duane Chappell. “It was determined that that was the contributing factor to the crash,” Chappell wrote in an email to The Orland Park Prairie. Township warming center opens as temperatures drop Submitted by Cook County Cook County is bracing for the season’s coldest temperatures. Municipalities around Cook County have opened warming centers for area residents to safely cope with the winter weather. Among them is Orland Township, 14807 Ravinia Ave. in Orland Park. Burgers, fries and a trail of lies: Police find counterfeit cash Daniel L. Bradley, 26, of 2120 Gladys Ave. in Chicago, was charged Dec. 27 with forgery and two counts of resisting arrest after he allegedly tried to use a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase two hamburgers, an order of fries and a milkshake at a restaurant in the 15800 block of LaGrange Road. An employee verified that the bill — presented for the $28 order — was fake, and Bradley fled the store, police said. An officer happened to be outside the store, and when Bradley exited and saw him, he fled on foot, into another nearby store, ignoring orders to stop, and tried to close a door to prevent an officer from capturing him, according to the report. Inside that store, staff reportedly found seven additional $100 bills later determined to be counterfeit. Dec. 26 • Larnell Fulwiley, 45, of 215 150th St. in Harvey, and Levenia E. Williams, 49, of 16565 Hermitage Ave. in Markham, each were charged with one count apiece of retail theft, possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia after they allegedly took merchandise from a drug store in the 7900 block of 159th Street. A police officer reportedly saw the two exit the story and get into a 2000 Mercedes ML55, Williams in the driver’s seat and Fulwiley the passenger’s side. The officer saw two leather bags in the backseat filled with an energy drink. There were 36 loose cans of the energy drink in a purse Williams carried, and three four-packs of the energy drink and five canisters of a baby formula were in another spot in the vehicle, according the report. They were seen on video inside the store with a flat bag on the way in, stopping by aisles with the aforementioned products and leaving the story with a bag that appeared difficult to carry, police said. Police said Williams’ purse had merchandise totalling $166.96, and there were loose energy drinks valued at $72. Police also reportedly found seven glass pipes with charred scouring pads inside cigarette packs in the driver’s door pocket, as well as another in Fulwiley’s pants pocket.
