Lockport teen dies after
being shot in head
Max Lapthorne, Editor
An 18-year-old Lockport
resident died Friday, Jan. 18,
after sustaining a gunshot
wound the previous day.
Carlos F. Gasca was pronounced
dead at 2:49 p.m.
on Friday, Jan. 18, at Amita
Health Adventist Medical
Center Bolingbrook after
reportedly suffering a gunshot
wound to the head a day
earlier, according to a press
release issued by the Will
County Coroner’s Office.
The incident reportedly occurred
on the 400 block of
Weber Road in Romeoville.
Two people have been arrested
in connection with
the incident, according to a
representative from the Romeoville
Police Department
who declined to identify
himself by name.
A GoFundMe page was
set up to help pay for Gasca’s
funeral expenses. As
LTHS to host Vaping
Information Night for parents
Submitted by Lockport
Township High School D205
In response to an increase
in vaping among students,
the Lockport Area Superintendent
Consortium is to
host an information night
at 7 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the
LTHS East Campus Auditorium.
The evening is to feature
a presentation by Jennifer
Hahs, coordinator of the
Rosecrance Health Network,
on the associated health risks
of vaping. Attendees are to
also learn about the products
and devices used for vaping
Monday, Jan. 21
of press time, it had raised
$4,030 of its $20,000 goal.
The description on the page
says the incident was an accident,
not a “violent act.”
“We want the world to
know that we are not losing
his precious life because of
a violent act caused by hatred
or anyone wanting to
do harm to him,” the page
reads. “This was an accident
that could have been avoided,
and we want to urge the
world to remember guns are
dangerous and can change
lives in the blink of an eye.”
The Will County Coroner’s
Office had an autopsy
scheduled for Monday, Jan.
21.
The Will-Grundy Major
Lockport City Council
Big Run Golf Club owners plan to sell land to developer
Car dealership in
line to replace Target
in Lockport Square
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
The Lockport Committee
of the Whole heard plans for
two large developments and
the Lockport City Council
approved an updated timeline
for the construction of
the planned Ganesha Gayathri
temple at its Jan. 16
meeting.
The owners of Big Run
Golf Club, which occupies
220 acres of currently
unincorporated land, are
planning to sell the property
for development and
annex the property to Lockport.
The parcel in question
is located south of 135th
Street, West of Smith Road,
North of 143rd Street, and
East of New Avenue, and
is currently not claimed by
either Lockport or Romeoville.
While no developers are
attached to the project yet,
the property owners have
worked with a land planning
firm to create a potential
plan for the site which
would include conservation
areas as well as 515 homes
including senior housing,
single family homes and
townhomes.
As part of the annexation
to Lockport, the development
would be supplied with
water and sewer utilities
from the City, which are to
be installed once a developer
buys the property.
Until the property is sold
and all the construction permits
and paperwork are sorted
out with the City, Benson
said residents can expect the
golf course to continue operations
as normal.
“It’s going to be a while
before you see any changes,”
Benson said. “Big Run
will continue to function as
a golf course through at least
the rest of 2019 and likely
through most of 2020.”
Mayor Steve Streit also
noted as the committee discussed
the item that the impacted
school districts have
been consulted about taking
on the development and
have not objected.
Students living in the new
subdivision would be sent to
Will County School District
92 and Lockport Township
High School.
The second plan discussed
by the committee was a
change to the businesses
which are to occupy the
Lockport Square development.
As originally envisioned,
Marcus Theaters and Holiday
Inn express on the east
side of the development
would be joined on the west
side by a large anchor store
such as Target. However,
plans for Target to come to
the space fell through. Now
a car dealership is being considered
for the anchor spot at
the far end of the development.
A Jeep-Chrysler dealership
has been in talks with
Benson and the City for several
months about amending
the original layout plan for
the development to accommodate
its space needs.
The main dealership
would go in the space originally
envisioned for Target.
Additionally, one of the
small outer lots, originally
intended for another small
business would be occupied
as a sales office for the dealership.
The space intended
to be Target’s parking lot
would become the dealership’s
sales lot.
Benson said that while
this would be a somewhat
“unique” set up for a commercial
development, it is
not unheard of, as a development
is West Chicago has a
similar layout.
He also noted that Marcus
Theaters and Holiday Inn
were consulted before moving
forward with the plan,
and both business “actually
prefer this set up.”
“They said it would be a
good draw for traffic,” Benson
said.
Streit said he supports the
development and said the
change is “very interesting.”
“It’s like if you planned a
vacation to Italy but when
you got off the plane you
discovered you’d landed in
Amsterdam,” he said with a
laugh. “It’s not the trip you
envisioned, but it would be
really cool too.”
Both development projects
are slated for final discussion
and votes at the Feb.
6 City Council meeting.
If the car dealership is
approved, Benson said construction
will likely begin
in 2019 and the dealership
would be operational sometime
in 2020.
The Council held a new
public hearing for the temple
development located at
16059 W. 151st St., which
was approved last year. The
hearing did not change any
of the specifications of the
project, but set deadlines for
completion of the project’s
phases and extended the final
completion deadline for
the site.
Currently, the congregation
meets in a single-family
house on the subject property.
Originally, the City had
anticipated a completion
date of the project by 2024
or 2025 according to City
Administrator Ben Benson,
however the plan approved
Wednesday extends the final
completion date until June
30, 2029, with completion
of Phase I of construction set
for June 2020.
During the hearing, no
members of the public came
forward to speak, and the
board voted unanimously to
accept the amendments to
the annexation agreement.
YOUR
LAWYER
by T. Andrew Coyle
Attorney at Law
What if your parent, loved
one, friend, or other relative
passed away while owning
a life insurance policy that
you didn’t know about? It is
common for people to have
an interest in an old life
insurance policies but they’ve
lost the paperwork on it. If
you think that may be the
case, fortunately Illinois has
a Life Policy Locator Service,
available through the State’s
Department of Insurance.
Approximately 500 life
insurance companies are
a part of the service and, if
you submit an application
and death certificate, you
will receive a report within
60 days (although usually
much faster) of any records
those companies may have
regarding a policy where the
deceased person is named.
Nationwide, there is nearly
$10 Billion of unclaimed life
insurance proceeds, some of
which eventually will end up
going to state governments
if family members can’t
be located. If you need
The National Geographic Geography Bee
has been occurring for more than 30 years
around the United States and, for the past
10 years, Homer Jr. High School has been a
participant.
This year’s bee was held on Jan. 16 at the
school’s library where parents and teachers
were able to watch. The champion this year
was seventh-grader Jameson Clark, who
also won the bee when he was in fifth grade.
Clark said he felt “pretty good” about winning.
To qualify for the geography bee, 914 seventh-
and eighth-grade students at Homer Jr.
High answered a preliminary round of seven
questions. During the preliminary round, 85
students answered six to seven questions correctly
and moved onto a tie-breaker round to
qualify for the top 10 spots.
One of the Top 10 students at this year’s
bee was runner-up Declan Kelly. Kelly was
last year’s champion at Homer. Kelly said
Clark was good competition to have, and he
performed well.
Eighth grade social studies teacher Timothy
Oess is the coordinator of the school’s
geography bee and he was also the teacher
who decided to register the school into the
competition for the first time 10 years ago.
“I just heard about it and I thought it’d be
fun — a fun competition and to learn more
about the world,” Oess said.
During the competition of the top 10 students,
participants go through rounds of oral
and written questions, fighting through double
elimination. After seven rounds, Clark
and Kelly were the only students left who
hadn’t missed two questions.
For the championship round, both boys
answered a series of three questions and
Clark answered one question correctly, while
Kelly was not able to get any.
“Some of [the questions] were pretty
hard, but I knew most of them,” Clark said.
Oess said the questions get progressively
more difficult, starting with U.S. capitals and
moving on to questions about countries in
Africa and Europe.
“It seems like generally U.S. geography is
strong with a lot of them,” he said. “African
geography seems to trip kids up the most,
I’ve seen.”
Oess said students probably struggle with
questions pertaining to Africa the most because
it is such a large continent and it is not
covered very much in the school’s curriculum.
Seventh-grader Jameson Clark won this
year’s GeoBee after eight rounds of questions
Jan. 16 at Homer Jr. High School.
Homer Jr. High students (left to right) Jack
Moran, Mattheus Folty and Jameson Clark
focus on a written question.
Before the bee, students are offered resources
including books and websites from
teachers, and there is also a GeoBee Challenge
app that students can use to answer example
questions.
“I didn’t really prepare,” Clark said. “I
just looked at a few questions on the GeoBee
app, but that was about it.”
Kelly also said he did not prepare much
for the bee because geography comes easy
to him.
“I just think it’s really interesting to learn
about other cultures and other places [and]
see all of the natural beauty of it,” Kelly said.
Because Clark won, he will prepare to take
an online qualifying test to compete in the
state geography bee where the top 100 scorers
from across Illinois are eligible to participate.

Lockport dance club
swings into state museum
Show Your Heart
Some Love Feb. 9!
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
Their first date was at
Willowbrook ballroom. A
number of dances later, they
fell in love. And on Jan. 15,
Rick and Debbie Hansen of
Lockport came out again to
take part in Lockport Swing
Thing at the group’s after
hours event at the Illinois
State Museum Lockport
Gallery.
“We love dancing,” Debbie
said. “We also love this
style of dancing. Lockport
has such an ambiance that
leads into the style of dancing
we do.”
Lockport Swing Thing has
been providing free dance
lessons in Lockport for
more than three years. Most
nights, including the event at
the ISM Lockport Gallery,
there are dancers ranging
from 11 years old all the way
up to residents in their 80s.
“It’s never too late to
start,” Debbie said with a
laugh. “I was 60 years old
when I started dancing.”
When Rick asked Debbie
to be her dance partner
for the rest of her life, she
embraced the dance culture
with open arms. Every time
Lockport Swing Thing holds
a class, Rick and Debbie can
be found on the dance floor.
“We’re trying to get the
20- and 30-year-old residents
in here dancing,” Debbie
said.
Lockport residents Jessica
Endres and R.J. Woodworth
have been the dance instructors
who have brought the
love of dance to Lockport.
Both taught swing dance at
World War II days in 2015
and never left.
“We want people to
dance,” Woodworth said.
Noah Canchola and Ygnacia Berma show off their swing
dance moves Jan. 15 during the Lockport Swing Thing’s
after hours event at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery.
Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
“People ask us to teach them
how to dance, and that’s how
this got started. We wound
up doing this on a weekly
basis.”
Right now, Lockport
Swing Thing is looking for
a home to host their Tuesday
night classes. Most nights
are free, but when they host
bands, they ask for a donation.
“We want to keep the
dance classes going,” Woodworth
said.
The Illinois State Museum
Lockport Gallery opened
their doors twice for Lockport
Swing Thing to hold
their dance lessons.
“We hope to keep the
dancing once a month to
continue here,” Endres said.
Looking out on the museum
dance floor, residents of
all ages were having fun and
learning at different levels.
“Personalities of the
younger crowd are great,”
Woodworth said. “We had a
home school group come out
last year. When they began
learning how to dance they
were a little socially awkward
and connecting with
people. Today, they have
learned how dance etiquette
works and the how to ask
people to dance. It’s been
cool to see that.”
John Lustig, the Illinois
State Museum Lockport
Gallery director, was honored
to host Swing Thing for
the second time.
“For me, this is a very important
component in what
we do,” Lustig said. “Having
this local dance group come
in and using the space, it’s
a wonderful opportunity to
show off our artwork and for
them to express themselves
in dance.”
As the night wound down,
couples kept moving to the
final dance steps of the night.
For the newlywed couple,
their dance continues.
“He’ll always be my lead,
I’ll always follow him,”
Debbie Hansen said.
entries are to be published
in The Legend’s Feb.
will be picking one winner in
each age group from Lockport.
Overall wellness highlighted by 22nd Century Media’s Healthy Living Expo
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
A new year often produces
a renewed dedication to
health and wellness, but it
can be hard to know whereto
start.
What type of exercise is
best for reaching individual
goals? What are the pros
and cons to different diets?
How does one incorporate
preventative medicine into a
wellness regimen?
Answers to these questions
and more were found at
22nd Century Media’s annual
Healthy Living Expo, held
Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Tinley
Park Convention Center.
Along with having the
opportunity to chat with 68
health and wellness vendors
— up almost 20 from 2018
— expo-goers also enjoyed
speaker sessions, cooking
demos and workout sessions.
Heather Warthen, chief
events officer for 22nd Century
Media explained that
the expo offered wellness
tips and techniques for anyone
and everyone.
“We bring in a variety of
vendors, from travel and insurance
to mental wellness,”
she said. “We’ve got yoga
places. We’ve got fitness
places. There’s definitely
something here for everybody.
It’s painting a different
picture for people on what
health and wellness looks
like for all aspects of life.”
VitaLife, of New Lenox,
was on hand highlighting
how a healthy body and
mind go hand in hand.
“Our push is to be healthy
weight-wise, but we focus
on the person as a whole,”
explained health coach Esther
Estela. “Weight is just
one aspect. In turn, we also
help people change their
mindsets to have a healthy
lifestyle in every aspect of
their life.”
Fit4Mom franchise owners
Mandy Dunne, Michelle
Marinello and Camilla Emmerick
empowered expo-goers
to make fitness a family
affair.
“We start with stroller
strides,so mom brings the
kids, and they sit in the stroller
for a 60-minute class,”
Emmerick said. “The instructors
blow bubbles,sing
songs and read books, and
the kids get to see their
moms working out, which I
think is the best part.”
Another fun fitness opportunity
found at the 2019
Greenridge Farm Sales Director Bobby Ruhaak offers
samples to John Trickle, of Tinley Park, on Saturday, Jan.
19, during 22nd Century Media’s Healthy Living Expo. Laurie
Fanelli/22nd CenturyMedia
Healthy Living Expo was
with Tinley Park’s Heart
&Sole Dance. Monica
Smaniotto, operations manager,
explained how dance
benefits the body, mind and
spirit.
“Dance is great not only
physically, but mentally, as
well,” she said. “A lot of
our older clients will come
in and tell us it helps their
memory. From there, physically,
you don’t really realized
that you’re exercising.
So we have people who
come in for lessons, and
they’ll be dripping sweat
when they’re leaving.”
Those looking for an athletic
approach gravitated
toward fitness studio ChuloFit,
which offers personal
and group training, as well
as classes.
Owner Lamont Doyle
said, “ChuloFit is a fitness
studio where we make
people feel comfortable. We
come up with innovative
workouts while providing a
great community.”
Winter weather may have
deterred some people from
venturing out, but those who
attended were able to sample
from the fitness buffet at the
convention center. Kathy
Lawlor, of Oak Forest, and
her husband, Mike, were
especially interested in the
cooking demonstrations.
“It’s a new year — new
healthy living — so I’m getting
some ideas on how to
eat better and stay healthy,”
Kathy Lawlor said.
Along with the cooking
demos, healthy eating tips
could be found from expo
vendors, including Hacked
Snacks, Smoothie King and
Greenridge Farm, the last
of which is a small, familyowned
company based out
of Elk Grove.
Greenridge Farm Sales
Director Bobby Ruhaak explained
how the company
went back to basics to offer
its customers a natural line
of deli goods.
“We take pride in our products,”
Ruhaak said. “We do
everything all naturally, so
we use whole muscle meat,
tumble it in natural spices,
and roast it or smoke it. Everything
is done the way it
used to be done before all the
chemicals were introduced,
and we don’t add any nitrates,
nitrites or binders.”
As many people look to
the new year as a time to
strive for new goals, so does
the fitness industry. Danni
Allen — Planet Fitness director
of health, wellness
and member engagement in
Cook County — said there
is a lot more in store in the
coming months.
“There’s a lot of things to
be excited about in 2019, especially
with Planet Fitness,”
Allen said. “We’ve brought
out a lot of new equipment,
like the PF360, which has
kettlebells, battle ropes and
more fun, functional fitness
types of things. At the same
time, we’re doing everything
we can to go beyond the four
doors of Planet Fitness, giving
back,donating and working
with the Boys & Girls
Clubs of America, so it’s a
really fun year ahead of us.”
UChicago Medicine,
Trouvaille Med Spa,Chiro
One Wellness Centers and
many more vendors also offered
attendees a wide variety
of healthy living advice
to carry into the new year
and beyond.
“This expo is going to help
me jumpstart my health routine
for the year,” said Christy
Avery, of Oak Forest.
parking approval process
Each vehicle to be
of overnight parking
per month
Submitted by the Lockport
Police Department
The Lockport Police
Department has partnered
with Frontline Public Safety
Solutions to modernize
its overnight parking approval
process.
Residents will continue
to go to www.lockportpo
lice.info to request parking
approvals electronically,
but they will be redirected
to Frontline’s Lockport
PD Public Portal. Once on
the public portal, residents
should click the “Submit
Now” button under “Over
Night Parking” and complete
the form that pops up.
Overnight parking will no
longer be limited by address.
Each vehicle is allowed two
nights of overnight parking
per month. The system will
not allow residents to receive
approval for more than
the allowed number of days,
which is meant to reduce the
number of incorrect entries.
Anyone with questions
about the new system should
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Metra crossing again scene
of incident, gate obliterated
For the second time since
November, a Metra crossing
gate at 191st Street in
Mokena drew a police response.
A semitruck reportedly
went through the Metra
crossing on Jan. 14, which
resulted in damage to the
gate arm and a train, according
to a Metra spokesperson.
The incident occurred at
7:03 a.m., as a truck crossed
the tracks at 191st Street.
The gate arm was knocked
off the pole and was left
hanging over the tracks,
before being hit by a Metra
Rock Island No. 410 train.
This caused delays Metra
line, as the gate arm and
damage to the train was addressed
on the scene.
The incident was reported
to Mokena police, who were
dispatched to the area. The
incident was later handed
over to Metra police.
It was reported that the
semitruck did not stop after
the incident. Metra officials
reviewed footage from the
train, but its spokesperson
said it is still unclear whether
the gate came down as
the truck was crossing, or
if the truck struck the gate
when it was down; however,
Metra spokesperson
Meg Thomas-Reile wrote in
a subsequent email to The
Messenger that “the lights
at the crossing can be seen
[in the video], and then you
see a truck going through
the crossing. The train arrives
at the crossing and the
gate arm is down, clearly
damaged and lying on the
track. It was then struck by
the train.”
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Gym teacher’s idea for
game gets published in
international magazine
Richard Schereck has
been a local physical education
teacher for 10 years,
but he has always wanted to
do more than just that.
And, after almost two
years of development, the
Tinley Park native can finally
say he has contributed
to his field in a way he has
always hoped.
As of the last week of
December, a game he created,
called BalanceBuster
has been published for sale
through Gopher, which is a
physical education, athletics,
and fitness equipment
company that develops and
sells games and other tools
for teachers and coaches.
“It was awesome to see
something that went from
my mind onto the page of a
catalog in a magazine that’s
shipped all over the world,”
he said.
Schereck has been a
teacher in Summit Hill
School District 161 for his
entire career.
In early 2017, Schereck
came up with an idea for a
game that involves balancing,
team building and spacial
awareness. While developing,
Schereck said his
main criteria for the game
was safety and being able to
get every student involved.
“Unfortunately, in physical
education, with space
limitations and the class
sizes, a lot of times teachers
settle with just dividing
the group of students in half
and then having them throw
at something,” Schereck
said, “So I wanted to create
something that is different
than just dividing and
throwing.”
Community fundraiser helps
Frankfort VFW post pay bills
From Taco Tuesdays to
Friday Fish Fries and every
day in between, Frankfort
VFW Post 1493 is known
as a gathering place for veterans
and the community
to enjoy good food, good
times and great company.
The post, located at 22057
Pfeiffer Road, provides veterans
with a community
bonded through the shared
experience of serving in foreign
wars, as well as countless
resources to assist with
their needs.
On Jan. 16, Frankfort
VFW leaders hosted a fundraiser
at CD&ME to help
the organization work toward
financial security and
continue supporting local
veterans for years to come.
Every dollar raised during
the fundraiser, from
event tickets to pizza sales,
will assist the organization
in paying its mortgage and
other bills. A successful
GoFundMe campaign allowed
the post to pay overdue
bills, which Cmdr. Stan
Tylinski discovered when
he first took over the organization,
and the group
is now seeking support for
ongoing expenses that include
monthly mortgage
bills, taxes, insurance and
licenses.
The fundraiser was met
with an outpouring of community
support, and many
groups and individuals
— among them Frankfort
Mayor Jim Holland and
his wife, Stacy, Budweiser,
CD&ME and Dancing Marlin
— sponsored the festivities.
Community groups
such as the Kiwanis Club,
Frankfort Lions Club and
other VFW chapters; elected
officials; local business
leaders; members of the
public; and veterans themselves
packed the venue,
eager to help in any way
they could.
Lockport Swing Thing
is a dance group that has
recently been swinging
through various locations
in town, with their latest
The world isn’t missing
But if you’re like me and
Step-Up Days offer glimpse of LTHS music programs
Area eighth-graders
experience high
school band, choir
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Eighth-graders Michael Erickson (left), from Kelvin Grove, and Dylan Bozen, from Oak
Prairie, warm up during the choir’s Step-Up Day.
A combination of eighth-graders from Kelvin Grove, Richland and Oak Prairie schools sing
together.
Music is a powerful form
of expression.
Not only does it allow artists
to share thoughts, emotions
and melodies, it also
has the power to create a
whole greater than the sum
of its parts.
On Jan. 16, the Lockport
Township High School choir
program welcomed eighthgrade
singers from Kelvin
Grove, Richland and Oak
Prairie Junior High schools
to the East Campus auditorium
to get to know current
students and staff at its annual
Step-Up Days event.
The program — which also
provided an event for band
students on Jan. 10 — is designed
to alleviate any stress
associated with starting the
high school music program
through helpful tips and a
whole lot of fun.
Chad Goetz, director of
choirs at LTHS, and Nathaniel
Hendrix, assistant choir
director, began the day by introducing
themselves to visiting
eighth-graders before
welcoming them on stage for
an ice-breaking game to set
the tone for a day of harmony.
The exercise also forced
students to switch seats with
choir members from other
schools so everyone had the
opportunity to mix it up and
make new friends.
“This day is a chance for
us to get the eighth-grade students
involved with our choir
program,” Hendrix said.
“They get to know me and
Mr. Goetz, get familiar with
the way we work and the way
we interact with our students.
They also get a chance to interact
with some of our high
school students and become
familiar with the way the program
will work.”
The LTHS choir program’s
warmup techniques,
rote songs, harmonies and
teaching methods were
shared during the choir’s
Step-Up Days program. Visiting
eighth-graders even
had the chance to learn one
of the most popular songs in
the LTHS choir’s repertoire,
“Noel,” the closing piece to
every holiday concert.
Goetz noted that his favorite
part of Step-Up Days
is watching the confidence
of all of the eighth-grade
students grow as they come
together as a group to sing
songs that are part of the
high school curriculum.
Mixed Choir member and
LTHS junior Emily Baio explained
that getting to know
high school choir members
when she attended Step-Up
Days as an Oak Prairie student
was inspiring and motivating.
“I liked interacting with
and learning from all the experiences
of the older choir
kids, because when we’re
younger, we look up to good
role models,” Baio said.
“And seeing how expressive
they were and how passionate
they were with the music
really triggered me. Being in
Oak Prairie Junior High eighth-grader Mallory Bianchi
shares a fun fact about herself with fellow singers at the
Step-Up Days event held Jan. 16 at LTHS’s East Campus
auditorium. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
choir since third grade, I’ve
always had a love for it.”
Senior LTHS choir student
Grace Miller added that the
music program is comprised
of an encouraging community
built on camaraderie
and friendship, while junior
Tyler Dooley, a member of
the Men’s Ensemble and
Mixed Choir, explained that
participating in a variety of
curricular choir groups only
adds to the experience.
“It helps you explore different
aspects of music,
helps you make friends,”
Dooley said. “It’s a family
that you get to be a part of,
and it’s just great.”
Oak Prairie Choir Director
Nicole Tolentino enjoys
watching her students have
fun and make friends through
a shared love of music during
Step-Up Days each year.
“They have a lot of fun,
and I feel like they can really
be themselves in this class,”
Tolentino said. “I hope that
they find their passion, and
they experience music as an
outlet and as a way to make
friends.”
Kelvin Grove Music,
Technology and Choir Director
Sarah Randolph added
that she enjoys helping
her students build their skills
to continue their passion and
love of music throughout
high school and beyond.
“Music does last a lifetime,”
Randolph said. “And
it’s not just about an organization
that they’re with now
— and making friends here
— but music can connect
people all around the world.
Music is the universal language.
This is such a wonderful
opportunity for the
students to be able to realize
that their voices will be with
them all of their life.”
When Lockport resident
Robert Kruczak and his
brother Richard first opened
Rustic Knead on July 1,
2015, they came into the
community of Lemont with
their business to test their
product and concept there.
They rebuilt and refurbished
the existing space,
which previously housed
The Great American Bagel,
into what is now both a café
and bakery that has its bakers
in plain sight behind a
glass window at the back of
the business.
Nearly four-and-a-half
years into operation, they
have long since carved their
niche in town, with regulars
enjoying the quality of the
food and atmosphere, which
has a rustic, wooded look
with the interior.
“The rustic angle I think is
back to the basics – back to
the way it used to be,” Richard
said. “The décor and
environment is warm and
homely, comfortable.”
For Richard and Robert,
the chance to do breakfast
and lunch seven days a week
and also extend catering
to families and companies
in the community and surrounding
area has been rewarding.
The name Rustic
Knead features both of their
initials, with the RK logo incorporated
on the wall by a
cushioned seating area near
the front entrance.
The next business development
for the brothers is
to partner with Lia P Gluten
Bakery. The new glutenfree
bakery is to open several
doors down from Rustic
Knead within approximately
the next month or so, Richard
said.
“The selection [at Lia P]
will be a lot deeper and go
The interior of Rustic Knead is intentionally designed to be
a warm and homely concept inviting to customers, according
to owners Robert, of Lockport, and Richard Kruczak.
Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
into details of things we
don’t here like cupcakes,
coffee cakes,” Richard said.
Meanwhile, the Kruczak
brothers will maintain
Rustic Knead, which serves
the breakfast portion of its
menu until 10:30 a.m. on
weekdays and 11:30 a.m. on
weekends.
The Kruczaks, who each
of years of experience in the
restaurant and hospitality
industries, wanted to have
healthy and creative menu
options, ones they refined by
working with different ingredients
on the sandwiches.
As for the baked goods
Rustic Knead offers, Robert
said preferences range
across the board, and the
dark chocolate Nutella, blueberry
Danish and almond
paste are some of the top flavors
of choice for the individual
croissants they bake.
As owners, Robert and
Richard are hands-on with
their business, crediting
their wives for helping with
their children and supporting
Rustic Knead, as well as the
help from other family and
friends.
while also doing some
wholesale baking to supply
its sibling owners stay busy
They hire staff with a baking
very well,” Richard said in
summary.

The Dish
Ever-evolving menu keeps EggCetera Cafe fresh
Mokena breakfast, lunch
spot thrives on customer
service
Thomas Czaja, Contributing Editor
EggCetera Cafe opened its doors
to the Mokena community at its first
location downtown in 2003 before
adding its second spot in 2010.
Since then, the business has become
known for its breakfast and
lunch selections, offering fresh
ingredients in comforting meals
at two cozy spots where friends
and family can gather. To reward
its loyal nucleus of patrons, Egg-
Cetera introduced a rewards program
early last summer.
“It’s fantastic,” owner Dino Bastas,
a Mokena resident for nearly
22 years, said of the program,
which allows diners to rack up
points for every dollar spent to get
various discounts, deals and freebies.
“We have some customers
coming in here every day. Why not
reward them?”
Those interested can search Egg-
Cetera Cafe in the Apple App Store
or Google Play Store to download
an app to sign-up for the program,
or do so at the restaurant and receive
a rewards card.
But a bigger part of what makes
EggCetera a continued success
may be the customer service. Customers
who frequent the business
might find that their usual server or
servers come to know their order,
and a sense of familiarity established,
Bastas explained.
“These regular folks come in;
their order is already in there,”
Bastas said. “Sometimes, the cooks
will peek through and start something
[for regulars].”
Those who have been to Egg-
Cetera on numerous occasions
know it has a diverse menu that is
occasionally tweaked. A rotating
specials menu also is available.
For breakfast, one of the more
recent menu entries is the triple
berry stuffed French toast ($9.49),
which Bastas said has strawberry
cream cheese in the middle, with
blueberries, raspberries and strawberries
piled on top.
Regardless of the breakfast or
lunch selection, the owner looks to
make sure to use fresh ingredients,
while still making a quick product.
“It’s real vegetables, nothing out
of a can,” Bastas said. “That’s the
biggest thing. As much fresh vegetables
and fresh ingredients as
possible that have been processed
the least.
“That’s the key: trying to get
people a healthier option.”
For those looking for something
filling, the biscuits and sausage
gravy ($8.69) are a big hit for the
breakfast folks, with buttermilk
biscuits cut in half and smothered
in a thick, homemade pork sausage
gravy, topped with two eggs.
In addition to the triple egg skillets,
egg-ceptional omelettes, pancakes,
crepes, French toast, waffles
and scramblers, the business offers
a variety of melts, wraps, a homemade
soup of the day, 100 percent
certified Angus beef burgers, salads
and a sandwich grill for the
lunch crowd.
Under lunch, the chicken Philly
($9.49) — containing a grilled
chicken breast, topped with sauteed
onion, pepper and mushroom,
smothered with mozzarella cheese,
on French bread — is a big draw.
“A couple of my cooks play
around, and we talk,” Bastas said
The red velvet pancakes ($8.99 on their own) are a seasonal special available through Valentine’s Day that
are topped with a homemade cream cheese icing and can have raspberries and chocolate chips added for $2.
Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
“You can get food anywhere. There’s more eateries now than ever
before. What differentiates us from all other eateries is the staff,
the customer service. Good food tastes great with good service.”
Dino Bastas — EggCetera Cafe owner
of how they tweak the menu. “I’ll
look to put something new on, and
we’ll work together.”
Of course, the specials always
include some seasonal tweaks. The
current specials are slated to run
through Valentine’s Day, according
to Bastas. Those include the hearty
and heartfelt red velvet pancake
breakfast — $10.99 as part of a
meal that has two eggs, two strips
of bacon or sausage links, hash
browns and a short stack of Egg-
Cetera’s red velvet pancakes.
In the fall, pumpkin pancakes
continue as a special through the
holiday season. After Thanksgiving
and through the holidays, gingerbread
pancakes also find a place
among the special. After the red
velvets complete their run, carrot
cake pancakes grace the specials
through Easter.
“People just want something different,”
Bastas said.
Corporate catering also helps
the business, especially during the
winter months. And Bastas said approximately
95 percent of their catering
is to businesses in town and
other surrounding communities.
And with a resurgent economy and
businesses steadily popping up in
the area, Bastas expects that catering
part of EggCetera to grow.
“We are here to stay,” Bastas
said. “I tell people all the time: You
can get food anywhere. There’s
more eateries now than ever before.
What differentiates us from
all other eateries is the staff, the
customer service.
“Good food tastes great with
good service. That’s what we are
working on.”

Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Jackie Maka
Jackie Maka is a senior at
Lockport Township and a
guard on the girls basketball
team.
What are your impressions
of the Porters
basketball season thus
far?
I think we came into this
season knowing we had a
lot of talent and could be
good, but we’ve played a lot
of new people and in some
of the games, the chemistry
was crazy. But in other
games, we’ve come out with
the talent we’ve had since
the start. Now we want to
get where our potential can
take us.
How long have you
been playing basketball?
I started playing in the
third grade. I thought it
would be cool to join the
D92 team, so I did and I just
enjoyed it.
Do you play any other
sports?
I did, but not anymore. I
played volleyball in sixth
grade and that went until
freshman year. I played softball
for a couple of years
when I was young and even
did cheer for a year. But
since my sophomore year, I
only play basketball.
What is it about the
game of basketball that
makes it the sport for
you?
I love being aggressive
on the court. It’s fun to dive
for balls and get in people’s
faces on defense. It just lets
me be aggressive.
What type of car do you
drive?
A 2015 Honda Civic. It’s
the best car ever. She’s made
it through a lot, is reliable
and I named her Isabella.
That’s because the car is cute
and the name is cute.
Do you do anything to
pump yourself up before
a game?
I listen to my pump-up
music. That ranges from
rap, to country, to 80s pop. I
also get a lot of sugar in my
system. I know people say
that’s bad, but it helps me.
What have you learned
from Lockport girls basketball
coach Dan Kelly?
I’ve learned to never quit,
no matter how tired you are.
He tells me that hustle makes
Randy Whalen/22nd Century Media
up for everything.
What is your spirit
animal?
A panda. Because they
love to eat and sleep and, on
the weekends that’s what I
do. I’ve earned it.
Do you plan on playing
basketball in college?
Nope. I’m going for academic
scholarships. I haven’t
made up my mind where I’m
going yet, but my top choice
now is the University of
Texas in Austin. That is the
top accounting school in the
country.
What is the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
The pride that I have to be
on the team here. Everyone
knows Lockport Township
High School. It makes me
excited and happy to be a
part of that.
KG cheer team finishes first at state
Submitted by Kelvin Grove
The Kelvin Grove cheerleaders
began practicing
skills back in May to prepare
for the 2019 IESA State
Cheerleading Competition
that was held on Jan. 12 at
the Peoria Civic Center, and
it paid off as the Hornets
took home first place.
The girls worked hard to
gain new skills and improve
their routine performance.
They faced and overcame
many challenges during the
season. They were supposed
to be competing against 37
other teams in the Small
Routine Division at State,
but due to a severe snow
storm on Jan. 12, several
teams dropped out of the
competition. The Hornets
ended up competing against
22 other teams. They gave a
near flawless performance at
State and brought home the
first-place trophy.
The title gives the KG
Cheer program eight IESA
State Cheerleading titles to
date. The Hornets have performed
at all 18 IESA Cheer
Competitions, receiving a
Top 10 finish all 18 years.
The program has three second-place
finishes and two
third-place finishes.
The team’s competitions
this season included: Wilmington
Spiritline Competition,
fourth place; Reed-
Custer Comet Invitational,
second place; Northpole Invitational
at Lincoln-Way
East, first place; Joliet West
Cheerfest, second place.
The Hornets are coached
by Karli Morrone. Volunteer
coaches are Rachel Maida,
Lynn Krumlinde and Adri
Sosa. Jenny Krumlinde is
the team choreographer.
Competition at the Peoria Civic Center. Photo submitted

Boys Basketball
Gardner’s career night leads Porters past Eagles
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
In 1979, “Video Killed the
Radio Star” was released.
In 2019, video helped
make Quinn Gardner the star.
Gardner came off the
bench to score a career-high
19 points and help the Lockport
Township boys basketball
team to a 65-55 victory
over Sandburg in a South-
West Suburban Conference
Blue Division battle on Friday,
Jan. 18, in Orland Park.
It was the fourth win in
five games for the Porters
(11-5, 2-1). On the flip side,
it was only the second time
that Sandburg (10-9, 1-3)
had played since finishing
the York Holiday Tournament
on Dec. 31 by winning
its fourth straight game.
“Sandburg has some pieces
and plays well,” Lockport
coach Brett Hespell said.
“To come here and withstand
them making shots
on their home court is very
good. But this year’s group
of seniors is special.”
One of those eight seniors
is Gardner. A dependable
guard in the rotation, he’s
had nice moments in the
past. In fact, it was a video
of his game against Sandburg
last season that helped
prepare him for this year’s
game.
“Coach Hespell talked
to me before the game and
told me to watch the tape of
the game here at Sandburg
last year when I scored 13
points,” said Gardner of the
Porters 48-45 overtime loss
on Feb. 16 last year at Sandburg.
“That helped me prepare,
and I was ready to play.
“We’ve got a mature
group of guys that know how
to compete and win games.
When we’re prepared the
right way and focused, we
can be a monster.”
Gardner’s previous career
high was 17 points, including
the game-winning
3-pointer, in a 58-53 victory
on Jan. 16 of last year over
visiting Joliet West.
“Quinn is awesome,” Hespell
said. “He’s been in a little
funk, so I challenged him
to watch that tape and he did.
He’s a mature senior making
mature decisions about his
team and knows what we are
capable of.”
A trio of seniors helped
support Gardner. Center
Tommy Halatek had 12
points and seven rebounds
while guards Jake Karli (6
assists) and Matt Hatzopoulos
added 11 points apiece.
Sandburg only has three
seniors. Two of them, forward
Marvin Agwomoh
(11 points, 9 rebounds) and
guard Ian Sanders (8 points)
were among the leading
scorers for the Eagles, who
were paced by 18 points
from junior guard Atharva
Atreya.
The Eagles never led but
tied the game three times.
Two of those were in the
third quarter as they rallied
from a 41-32 deficit to tie the
game at 42-42 on a 3-pointer
by Atreya with two minutes
left in the period. Gardner
scored on a short jumper, but
Agwomoh answered with a
short jumper of his own for
one last tie at 44-44 with
1:24 to play in the quarter.
A 3-pointer by senior
guard Blake Sartin (7 points)
put the Porters ahead for
good and Karli canned a
runner in the lane just before
the buzzer for a 49-44 lead
after three. Atreya hit a free
throw in the opening moments
of the fourth quarter
to draw the Eagles within
four points. Lockport, however,
went on an 11-0 run in
just over three minutes for
a 60-45 lead with 4:23 to
play in the game. Halatek
had six points in the stretch
and Gardner, who was 4-of-
6 from beyond the arc in the
game, nailed a 3-pointer during
the spurt.
Despite the Porters missing
6-of-8 free throws at
one point down the stretch,
Sandburg never got closer
than 61-52. After the poor
stretch, Gardner capped off
the win by making three
After an exchange of
3-pointers to open the game,
Lockport went on a 10-0 run
over a 2-minute span. Hatzopoulos
capped that off with
a pair of 3-pointers. Another
12-2 burst helped the Porters
take a 25-12 lead before junior
guard Zach Kusper (6
points) nailed a 3-pointer at
the buzzer to close the Eagles
within 25-15 after the
opening quarter.
Trailing 32-21, a 10-0
Sandburg spurt made it a
one-point game with 1:52
to play in the half. But the
Porters scored the last seven
points of the half, including
Gardner banking in a long
3-pointer at the buzzer for a
39-31 halftime lead.
“That [shot] at the end
of the half hurt,” Sandburg
coach Todd Allen said. “We
obviously weren’t real sharp
to start [8 turnovers in the
first quarter]. We struggled
early, but Lockport helped
take us out of it. Listen, that’s
a good team Brett [Hespell]
has there. Lockport has seniors
and guys that can hit
shots from long distance.
Plus you have to account for
their big guy [Halatek] in the
middle.
“But give our kids a lot of
credit to battle back. We just
came up short. We’ve got a
lot of games coming up [4 in
6 days from Jan. 21-26] and
that’s good. We’ve had some
time off.”
Time off is something the
Porters won’t get down the
stretch. They play 10 games
in the final 27 days of the
regular season as they look to
finish with their first winning
campaign in seven years.
“It’s a huge win,” Halatek
said of beating Sandburg.
“We went on a big run and
sealed it. We’re just playing
winning basketball.”
Earlier in the week, on
Jan. 15, Lockport traveled to
face a long-time rival, Joliet
West and emerged with a 57-
48 victory.
The Porters took an early
lead and held it the whole
way. Karli (15 points, 6 rebounds,
4 assists), Halatek
(13 points, 7 rebounds),
Hatzopoulos (13 points) and
Sartin (11 points) led the
way. Hespell said that senior
guard Aaron Grcevic was
“the defensive player of the
game.”
Lockport is back in action
on Friday, Jan. 25, for a special
Veteran’s Night game as
Stagg comes to town for another
SWSC Blue clash.

Girls Basketball
Strong week gets Lockport back on track
Dominant win, near
upset mark a turning
point for Porters
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
That winning feeling.
That’s what the Lockport
Township girls basketball
team had been lacking this
season.
But the Porters rediscovered
it last week. In fact,
they nearly pulled a big upset
and experienced it twice.
But first, to open the week
they halted a six-game losing
streak. That came Jan. 14 in
a 71-26 victory over Plainfield
North in a nonconference
matchup at Lockport.
Ten players scored for
Lockport in the blowout victory
and looked to have fun
doing it. A half dozen of those
scored seven points or more.
Junior forward Jenna Cotter
(13 points, 10 rebounds, 5
blocked shots) led the way.
Senior guard Jackie Maka
(11 points, 5 rebounds), junior
guard Sawyer Hollatz (8
points), freshman guard Elizabeth
Sochacki (8 points),
sophomore forward Elena
Knebel (7 points), and junior
guard Abby Pappagoerge (7
points) all joined in the scoring
action.
“It was fun,” Cotter said.
“We’ve been working hard
at practice and it’s showing.
It’s our turnovers that
have hurt us this season. We
haven’t had the consistency
as a team. But we’ve gotten
a lot better and are taking
care of the ball.”
Lockport had 14 turnovers
in the game while forcing
22. The Porters forced 10 of
those turnovers in the first
quarter, which helped them
explode to a huge lead of
26-4 after the first eight minutes.
Included in that was
a 15-0 run for a 20-2 lead,
during which Maka scored
seven points.
“We’ve been working really
hard in practice to find
that chemistry,” Maka said.
“I feel that we’re getting our
grove and getting everyone
the ball.”
Plainfield North (5-18) was
led by sophomore guard Lexie
Hernandez (11 points) and
junior guard Katelyn Sparlin
(7 points). The Tigers best
player and only senior, 5-foot-
11 forward Olivia Cantu who
is averaging a double-double,
missed the game with a high
ankle sprain.
Ahead 29-6, Cotter scored
five straight points in an 11-0
run. The Porters led 43-11 at
halftime, and another 11-0
run in the third quarter made
it 56-13. Lockport led 60-17
after three.
“I thought the girls had
a lot of energy,” Lockport
coach Dan Kelly said.
“We’ve had some good practices
and we needed a win.”
Senior guard Payton
Grcevic, who had six points
in the game, echoed her
coach’s thoughts.
“Obviously after a few
losses, it was good to get
a win,” Grcevic said. “It’s
been frustrating but not
[against Plainfield North].
We had a lot of energy on the
court and on the bench. We
just have to keep going and
keep executing.”
Hollatz said she believed
the win would boost the Porters
the rest of the season.
“I think this will turn our
season around,” Hollatz said.
“We needed a good win, and
I think this will change our
conference play. I feel that
this will have a domino effect
with other games.”
Hollatz might have been
onto something, because
the Porters nearly pulled
an upset two nights later.
That happened when Stagg
came to town on Jan. 16
for a SouthWest Suburban
Conference Blue Division
game. There, the Chargers,
who are battling for first
place in the conference,
barely pulled out a 59-55
victory over the Porters.
Lockport (8-17, 0-5)
trailed by 11 late in the
third quarter, but Maka (12
points) hit a 3-pointer at the
end of the period to draw the
Porters within 46-38. They
chipped away from there
and eventually tied the game
at 55-55 on a layup by Cotter
(12 points) with 20 seconds
to play.
But the Chargers (17-4,
4-1), who moved into a tie
for first in the SWSC Blue
when Lincoln-Way East defeated
Bolingbrook 74-57
the next day, recaptured the
lead when freshman guard
Laila Barakat (8 points)
scored in the lane with 9.8
seconds to play. She missed
the ensuing free throw and
Lockport had an opportunity
to tie or win but turned the
ball over with two seconds
to play and senior forward
Sydney Downs (12 points)
clinched the win with a pair
of free throws with seventenths
of a second to play.
The Porters led 14-6 early
on and 16-12 after the
first quarter. Trailing 22-18,
Stagg went on an 11-0 run
before settling on a 29-24
halftime lead. Forward Nicole
Vacha (17 points) and
fellow senior Kelsey Kelley
(15 points), who plays
guard, were the leading scorers
for the Chargers.
“Our girls played hard,”
Kelly said after the Stagg
game. “Early in the season,
we would have folded, but
we can hold our heads high
that the girls gave great effort.
We’re going to keep
working.”
The schedule doesn’t
get any easier for the Porters
as they have all SWSC
Blue games from here on
out. Included in that was a
home game against defending
conference champion
Bolingbrook on Tuesday,
Jan. 22, and a 6:30 p.m. one
on Thursday, Jan. 24, against
a talented Lincoln-Way East
team.
Porters, Warriors finish deadlocked at SWSC dual meet
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
The SouthWest Suburban
Conference swimming
meets are just over a week
away.
Lincoln-Way West and
Lockport Township are in
different divisions of the
conference, so the two teams
won’t go head-to-head in
the meet. That’s unfortunate
because when they did
last week, something unique
happened: they tied.
On the varsity level, each
team won six events and finished
with 92 points in an
SWSC dual meet on Jan. 15
at Lockport.
“I don’t recall ever having
a tie,” said Lockport coach
Jason Ozbolt, who is in his
sixth season as coach of the
Porters. “It was a fun way to
finish the meet with a tie.”
While the two teams
won’t be in the same division
of the conference meet,
they saw each other again
last weekend at the Lockport
Invite.
In last week’s dual meet,
they both used people in different
events.
“We mixed some things
up and had some people in
off events,” Ozbolt said. “To
get some of these times is a
nice confidence boost.”
In the dual meet, the Porters
won two of the relays.
They kicked it off with a
win in the 200-yard medley
relay as the foursome
of sophomores Kevin Moe
and Tommy Abramite, along
with junior Augusto Ureta
and senior Simon Harmata
came in with a winning time
of 1 minute: 48.58 seconds.
Lockport later pulled out the
400-yard freestyle relay to
cap the meet and pull into
the tie. That was a time of
3:39.91 behind sophomore
Caesar Plaszewski, Harmata,
senior Michael Bates and
Ureta.
Winning individual
events for the Porters was
Plaszewski (1:06.76) in the
100-yard butterfly, Ureta
(5:27.05) in the 500-yard
freestyle and senior Josh
Martinez (1:08.23) in the
100-yard backstroke.
“We’ve been pushing,”
Simon Harmata said. “There
are moments that we’ve
struggled this season but
also times we’ve shinned.”
Lockport had one other
winner. That was senior sensation
Wrigley Fields. He
won with a six-dive total
score of 322.05. The next
day, on Thursday, Jan. 17,
Fields set a pool record at
Stagg with a six-dive score
of 329.3. He followed that
up the next day by breaking
the school and pool diving
records at the Lockport Invite
with a 12-dive score of
536.25.
Fields will not be diving
at the conference meet, because
he is also a member
of the Porters co-ed cheerleading
team, and that is the
weekend of the State Finals.
Fields also wants to medal
(Top 12) at state in diving.
After starting slowly in last
weeks dual meet, he was satisfied
with how he did.
“As long as I score over
300 I’m happy,” Fields said.
“It will be nice to be in our
home pool for the sectional.”

Porters dominate, win third straight conference title
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
It was a Porter 3-peat.
Led by an entire team of
All-Conference players, the
Lockport Township girls
bowling team used its home
lanes to its advantage. The
result was another South-
West Suburban Conference
championship at the conference
meet on Saturday, Jan.
19, at Strike N’ Spare II in
Lockport.
It was domination from
start to finish as Lockport
nearly bowled a record game
to open the day and finished
with a 6,112 total to defeat
runner-up Lincoln-Way West
by 605 pins. It’s the third
straight conference championship
for the Porters and
their 10th overall since the
league formed for the 2005-
2006 season. The only school
that comes close to that is
Andrew, which won six
straight SWSC Red Division
titles between the 2009-2010
and 2014-2015 seasons.
From the 2009-2010 season
through the 2015-2016
season, there were two divisions
in the SWSC for girls
bowling, but now with only
nine schools participating
in girls bowling, it’s back to
one big conference meet.
“It never gets old,” Lockport
coach Art Cwudzinski
said. “It’s always a team goal
to win the conference. You
never get tired of winning.”
Lockport didn’t quite capture
first in everything, however.
That’s because West junior
Kenzie Ullian took the
individual champion honor,
winning her fourth tournament
of the year, with a
1,312 six-game series. That
included a high of 247 in the
third game.
“Yes, it definitely was
nice,” said Ullian, who was
second at the conference
meet last season. “Honestly
I’ve just been focusing more,
making spares and working
well. [With the postseason
coming up] we just have to
make sure we stay on our
own game and not worry
about other teams.”
The Top 11 bowlers made
All-Conference. All five
of the Lockport bowlers
achieved that honor. Sophomore
Chloe Siezega (1,294,
2nd, high of 248 in game
No. 2) led the way and was
only 18 pins out of first.
“It was close,” Cwudzinski
said of the individual
battle. “Kenzie just bowled a
little better in the last game
(227-201) and earned it. But
it added a little excitement
to it.”
Siezega’s six-game total
and was a career high, and so
was her opening three-game
series of 674.
“It was just picking up
spares and believing that my
teammates had my back,”
Siezega said. “[In the postseason]
I expect us to work
better as a team like we did
[at the SWSC Tournament].
We had a little talk as a team
[a couple of weeks ago] and
that helped a lot.”
The rest of the Porters All-
Conference bowlers were junior
Samantha Traina (1,285,
3rd, high of 247 in game No.
2), junior Jessica Ramirez
(1,196, 5th, high of 265 in
game 2), senior Erin Kleffman
(1,187, 7th, high of 216
in game No. 3), and junior
Emilie Pleshar (1,150, 8th,
high of 216 in game. No. 2).
They all helped the Porters
to the first-place total of
6,112. West (5,507) was second,
followed by Lincoln-
Way Central (5,404) and
Lincoln-Way East (5,326)
was fourth. Senior fourthplace
finisher Alyssa Novak
(1,220, high of 247 in game
4) led fifth-place Sandburg
(5,243). Senior and 11thplace
finisher Noelle Doody
(1,131, high of 211 in game
No. 2) led Andrew (4,878) to
sixth place. Stagg (4,180),
Thornridge (4,129) and
Bolingbrook (4,100) rounded
out the nine teams.
“The girls bowled very
well, the best they had all
year,” Cwudzinski said.
“We bowled a 1,187 in our
first game of the day. That
was the fourth-best total in
school history. Our highest
was a 1,213 in 2016. We actually
had a couple of opens
in the 10th frame, or we
would have broken that.”
On the JV level, Lockport
dominated with a total of
5,695. That was 1,265 pins
ahead of runner-up West
(4,430). Sophomore Payton
Vandenburg (1,231, high of
226 in games 1 and 3) was
the individual champion as
the Porters placed all five
bowlers in the Top 5.
They’re back.
After qualifying for
state a year ago, both the
Lincoln-Way Central and
Lincoln-Way West boys
bowling teams are back this
season. In fact, West is there
for the third-straight season.
Plus, after missing out last
year, Lockport Township
will return for the sixth time
in the past seven seasons
and 11th time since the state
tournament started for the
2002-2003 season.
That’s because the trio of
local teams survived the Andrew
Sectional, which was
the toughest sectional in the
state, on Saturday, Jan. 19,
at Orland Bowl, and were
among the Top 6 advancing
be held this Friday, Jan. 25
and Saturday, Jan. 26, at St.
Minooka (6,630 pin-fall
LaBonte (1,499), Richards
“We pulled together to get where we are at. It’s the hardest
sectional in the state, and with that, we did very well.”
Lockport (6,277) placed
fifth and Joliet West (6,262)
squeezed out the last spot
when Sandburg (7th, 6,244)
faltered with an 871 in the
final game.
Plainfield South (6,232)
was eighth, followed by
Oak Forest (6,189), Brother
Rice (6,095), Plainfield
Central (5,944), Plainfield
North (5,915), T.F. North
(5,895), Thornridge (5,822),
Evergreen Park (5,747) and
Morgan Park (5,640) rounding
out the 16-team field.
To compare how tough this
was, every team in the Andrew
Sectional except for
Morgan Park scored high
enough to advance out of
the Hinsdale South Sectional.
In third place at the break
(3,342) the Porters had a
935 in the fourth game. That
dropped them out of the Top
6 at that time and got coach
Ron Davis fired up to do an
old-fashioned pep talk.
“I went off,” Davis said.
“I told the team, ‘Do you
want to bowl or do you
want to go home?’ Even in
the last game, I asked them,
‘Are you going to bowl or
are you done?’”
The Porters came back
with a 1,061 in the fifth
game and then survived
a 939 in the sixth game
to finish 33 pins ahead of
seventh-place Sandburg.
Part of that was because of
a great day by Evan Pleshar
(1,450, 4th overall, high of
278 in Game 2), who was
Tune In
the only Lockport bowler to
be in all six games. Fellow
senior Jake Grau (1,055,
248 in Game 3) bowled the
final five games for the Porters.
“Honestly, it was a rollercoaster,”
Grau said. “But as
a team, we pulled together
to get where we are at. It’s
the hardest sectional in the
state, and with that, we did
very well. Coach Davis just
wanted us to do the best we
could.
“I wasn’t even on the
team last year. So to go to
state my senior year is just
surreal. It’s great.”
Everyone in the Lockport
lineup bowled at least
two games. Sophomore
Jimmy Kontos (838, high
of 258 in Game 1) and junior
Ray Bufka (833, high
of 256 in Game 3) each
bowled the first four games,
while senior Jimmy Rozhon
(727, high of 195 in Game
5) bowled a total of four
games. Caleb Derrig (604,
high of 215 in Game 1) was
in the first three games, fellow
senior Andrew Bean
(408, high of 223 in Game
5) and junior Tim Hoak
(362, high of 197 in Game
5) bowled the last two
games for the Porters.
“In the postseason, you
play to live another day,”
Davis said. “But this sectional
is so tough. Our seventh-place
team could come
in third in most any other
sectional. We hadn’t placed
in an invite all year, so to get
fifth in the sectional is great.
For most of these guys, they
haven’t been to state. So, it
will be a new experience.”
Individually, Providence
senior Adam Kowalik will
also be going to state. The
Homer Glen resident, who
will bowl at St. Ambrose
next season, finished in
ninth place overall with a
total of 1,383. That included
a high of 240 in the second
game.
“I just missed making it
by about 10 pins last year,”
Kowalik said of making it
to state. “I was determined
to make it this year. I was
just going in prepared really
well. My high school
coach, Kevin Kullman, really
helped me prepare.
“I was one of the original
nine guys on the first bowling
team at Providence [in
the 2015-2016 season]. I
came into [the sectional]
with a lot of confidence.
Still, it’s kind of surreal. After
four years, it’s a dream
come true.”
“We took fourth in the
[SouthWest Suburban] conference
meet, third at the
[Minooka] Regional, and
now second at the sectional,”
Central coach Coley
O’Connell said. “Yes, the
kids are saying that means
first [next week at state].
But we just had a good
morning (3,385) series and
kind of rode that wave the
rest of the day.”
No one rode it better than
Alex Nolan. The junior veteran
rolled a 300 in the fifth
game.
“Every ball I had was
right there,” Nolan said of
the 300. “I was very happy
to do it at the sectional. It’s
really rewarding.”
That wasn’t the only 300
of the day. Brother Rice
sophomore Tony Lundy had
one in the third game, and
that helped him to a total of
1,483 and a second-place
finish. As for Nolan, he finished
with a 1,416 series,
which was good for seventh
place overall, including
starting the day with a 249.
“Going into the regional
and beyond, we’ve just
worked as a team,” Nolan
said. “It’s going to get better
and better. I just know
we have to focus at state.
It’s a grind there with six
games on Friday and hopefully
six games on Saturday.
You have to be sharp mentally
and get spares.”
Nolan, who helped the
Knights take third in the
state last season, had to be
mentally tough on his 300.
Before the 10th frame, there
was an equipment malfunction
on the lane, and he had
to wait it out to complete
the perfecto.
“He’s only a junior, but
he’s our veteran,” O’Connell
said of Nolan. “We had only
two seniors today, and they
weren’t in the starting lineup.
But they stayed upbeat.
We used all our guys, and
they all stepped up when we
needed them to.”
