Plus, she’s mastered several languages: Mandarin, Danish, Japanese, Spanish and Greek. But to make my job easy, she answered my question in English. Jeff Blackman: You’ve had quite a journey… Yvonne Wolf: My family and I came to the U.S./ Los Angeles from Taiwan when I was eight. First impression: everything was big. The airport, cars, even streets were larger/wider than Taipei. My cousin took my sister and me for our first Big Mac. It was a shock to taste a sour pickle on that first bite, but I fell in love with fries and shakes. Plus, transitioning from eating with chopsticks to bare hands was odd. In 2011, I relocated with my family to Glenview. JB: You’re immersed in educating others about Chinese culture. YW: Chinese culture can be intimidating. I help people feel comfortable with it. American culture has become more casual. Chinese culture has changed much slower. For the Chinese, using both hands to exchange business cards is still standard practice And when managers meet, they introduce themselves using their last names first, before deferring to first names. JB: In February, you’re speaking at the Glenview Park Center, on the “Art of Chinese Dining.” What’s the art? And is it true in China that how/where one holds chopsticks is a reflection of societal status? YW: Yes. Although, how one holds their chopsticks can show good upbringing and social status. Now, it’s less strictly perceived. Yet, there are several Chinese dining rules that may seem puzzling. Chinese don’t use chopsticks to point at people, stir tea, or skewer food. Chinese culture is more group-centered than individual-centered. Family-style lets people share food from a communal plate. Ordering dishes is about what the group likes, to invite variety and incorporate a balance of colors and flavors. This is one way Chinese show the harmony of yin and yang in meals. In the “Art of Chinese Dining,” I’ll also share nonverbal Chinese culture cues. JB: 2019 is the “year of the pig.” What’s the significance? YW: Each zodiac animal represents positive traits humans can incorporate into our behavior. The boar represents good nature, a joyous attitude and generosity. Upon each return of one’s zodiac animal, it’s a time for self-reflection and improvement. Some zodiac animals are so favored by the Chinese — like the dragon — during that year, birth rate, school enrollment and college admissions increase. JB: After visiting 20- plus countries and 25 U.S. states, what have you learned? YW: We’re always “reading” others. Misunderstandings happen when we misread them. In France, if two people exchange kisses on the cheek, we don’t assume they’re lovers. In a Chinese-speaking country, it would be more likely, they are. Americans tend to move, talk, eat and socialize quickly. I’d suggest when you visit other countries or even states, slow down, plan fewer things, enjoy waiting time. THE WINNETKA CURRENT Request to reconsider assisted living, memory care facility gets denied Last month, the Northfield Village Board unanimously rejected a 44-unit assisted living and memory care facility at 1622 Willow Road. But an attorney representing the project’s petitioner came to the board’s Tuesday, Jan. 15 meeting to request the matter be reconsidered. Ultimately, the board turned down the request. Bridget O’Keefe, an attorney at Daspin and Aument, requested the matter be reopened for two to three months and come before the board again after re-engaging with the community. “What we’d like to ask tonight is that the matter be reopened for further discussion with the neighbors, community and the board,” O’Keefe said. “We’d like to just open it up, not forever, but for a 60- to 90-day period to allow us to go back and have discussion with the neighbors to come to some consensus or make progress and come back to you and present what we can.” Village Attorney Buzz Hill explained the process for the request to reconsider the matter. Any matter the board votes on may be reconsidered by adopting a motion at the very next meeting to do so. In order to reopen this particular matter, the board would have had to vote to do so at its Tuesday, Jan. 15, meeting, which it did not ultimately do. The process requires a motion to reconsider, a second and an affirmative vote by the majority of the seven board members. Because only four of the seven board members were present, all four in attendance would have had to vote to reconsider. Ultimately, no motion was made to reconsider, so last month’s unanimous vote rejecting the assisted living and memory care facility stands. “It will take one of you to make a motion to reconsider, and it requires a second and it requires the affirmative vote of all four of the elected officials sitting here tonight,” Hill said. “It requires the affirmative vote of the majority of those holding office.” Reporting by Todd Marver, Freelance Reporter. Veteran yoga teacher Laura Merlo, of Glencoe, took ownership last month and is already putting her mark on the longstanding studio. Attendees and passersby may have noticed the updated logo and signage, and the newly branded merchandise in the window, reflective of the fresh, new energy Merlo is bringing to the downtown Glencoe yoga studio. While the appearance of Reach has been updated, Merlo is intent on leaving other aspects of the studio, such as the schedule and the teachers, just as they were. When former owner Dani Petrie was ready to sell, Merlo referred to her decision to take ownership as a “no-brainer.” “(It was) an offer I couldn’t refuse,” she said. “I knew I could do it.” Before teaching yoga, Merlo had owned a boutique that she had built from the ground up in Chicago, so running a business is not an entirely new endeavor for her. And though she never planned on becoming a yoga teacher — let alone the owner of a studio — Merlo felt that with her experience and the timing, and the fact that Petrie would be leaving her a smoothly running studio in good condition, it was something she had to give a try. As a Glencoe resident, Merlo is appreciative of the strong sense of community at Reach. “There’s a yoga class for everybody,” said Merlo, reminding that yoga is not just about the physical movements of the practice, but it also focuses on yogi philosophy and inwardlooking meditation.
