The Highland Park Community Foundation is proud to have provided over $2,000,000 in grant funding since 1992 to locally-operating nonprofit organizations to help address unmet needs in our community. We are committed to improving people’s lives and contributing to Highland Park’s vibrancy now and in perpetuity! Give Where You Live to help… NURTURE CHILDREN STRENGTHEN FAMILIES DEVELOP SKILLS IN TEENS ASSIST OLDER ADULTS Our community has so much to celebrate this year as Highland Park marks its sesquicentennial – our milestone 150th Anniversary. Starting in January with dozens of events and celebrations, we are excited to be kicking off HP150. This year-long commemoration provides us with an opportunity to come together to reflect on our rich history, our passionate present, and our exciting future. As the year progresses, many events and programs have been planned with more to come. For a full list, visit www. cityhpil.com/HP150. There will be something for everyone, thanks to the collaborative efforts of so many who work to make our community a diverse and exciting place to live and visit. Our City staff, public officials, library, schools, park district, service organizations, not-for-profits, clergy, business leaders and an incredible array of volunteers have worked tirelessly to make Highland Park the place to be in 2019. Highlights include the Big Bash (in conjunction with Fourth Fest) on July 4th, the installation of an HP150 public sculpture, the unveiling of a quilt, an architecture tour, the publication of a commemorative book, the opening of a time capsule, over 150 service projects, related school curricula, and a pioneer celebration that is happening in the fall. A huge thank you to our sponsors and steering committee. I invite you to join with friends, neighbors and family from far and wide to participate, reflect and learn about this great city of ours! From the days of the Potawatomi encamped on our shores, to the homesteaders and the pioneers, the summer visitors, Ft. Sheridan, our farmers, the origination of the hospital, the railroad riders to Ravinia Festival and the introduction of the expressway, doubling our population, to our proud legacy as an arts incubator, home to excellent schools, incredible architecture, our beautiful lakefront and parks, a wonderful library and vibrant downtown. We are... progress! There is so much to learn about this city! Where was the military academy located? When was the cholera epidemic? What was Highland Park’s role in the Civil War? Where did MacArthur stay when he visited? Where was Steppenwolf founded? Who is our resident Muppet? As we think about our city, what it means to us as individuals and collectively as a community, I ask that we take lessons from the past, harness our passions in the present, and plan for a future of strength, curiosity, compassion and leadership. We are the heart of the North Shore. As we stand on the shoulders of those who had vision and a pioneering spirit, whether in 1869, 1969 or 2019, I encourage each of us to commit to continuing our legacy of growth with purpose, pursuit of excellence, and love of this great community we all call home. HP150 is not only about looking back at our evolution to the present, but also about looking forward to an exciting future filled with possibilities and achievement.
