PARENTAL WEEKLY UPDATE – 25th January 2019
(available on our website)
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to all year 9 parents who attended the Options Evening presentations
last night, I hope you found it informative. Please be reminded of the
deadlines for handing back your child’s choices and also that all the information,
including the slides from the presentation in the hall, can be found on
the school website.
Congratulations to all the year 11 students who successfully completed their
mock exams recently. Teachers will be feeding back to the students over the
next week or so. I would like to inform you that there are 59 school days until
the year 11 students start their GCSE exams. It is vital that attendance is as
good as it can be during that time.
I do hope that you are able to support the school production of ‘The Government
Inspector’ next week. The students have been working since September
on the production and it promises to be excellent. The performances run
from Tuesday – Friday in the school hall and it starts at 7.00pm, with the
doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from reception or via the box
office website (dramaboxoffice@ktemplar.herts.sch.uk).
I was alarmed this week to see some of our students risking serious injury. I saw a number
of them jumping out of cars on Weston Way and Letchworth Road as the traffic was
queuing. They then stood in the middle of the road whilst cars moved either side of them
and ran across the road when they saw a gap. This is incredibly dangerous! If you do drive
your child to school please can I ask you to drop your child off in a suitable place. A few
minutes walking from up the road is much safer than the risks I have witnessed this week.
Kind regards,
Tim Litchfield
Headteacher

The Government Inspector
It is not too late to get tickets for this year’s production – The Government Inspector. Originally written by Nikolai
Gogol and adapted by David Harrower, the play is a satire set in Russia in the 1830’s.
The narrative unfolds in a small provincial town called Svistunov. The town is poorly governed by the Mayor and his
troop of bungling senior town officials. When the Mayor hears that a Government Inspector is rumoured to visit the
town, he and his band of merry men descend into panic. Fearful that the extent of their dishonesty and incompetence
be exposed, they clutch at all straws to save their reputations…… A simple case of mistaken identity exposes
the hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the town.
The students involved in the production auditioned in July last year and have been rehearsing regularly since September.
It has been wonderful to see them explore the fun of the text and develop comic characters. As always, the
actors have been supported by an enthusiastic production and technical team who have been working to develop
the look of the piece.
Tickets are £8 and £5 concession.
Tickets can be reserved by emailing dramaboxoffice@ktemplar.herts.sch.uk
Tickets can also be purchased from the canteen at break and lunch times.
We do hope you can join us at 7.00pm one evening next week for a trip to Svistunov……

To tie in with the current film poster analysis Year 10 are working on in
This was a brilliant opportunity for students to practise their ever
to a brief for a client as many media companies do. Both Miss Spurling and I
were very impressed with some of the work produced which will be used
around the school on the run up to the show. Well done all.

Geography News
Yr12 Italy Trip
On Friday 11 th January, we departed from school early to catch our flight to Naples. During our first day in Naples,
we met our tour guide and had a brief visit of the touristy area of the city, which included a visit to the catacombs
under the old part of the city. This was then followed by a slightly chaotic journey out of town with our ‘acrobatic’
bus driver as we headed for Sorrento and our hotel.
The second day started early as we were going on a panoramic drive along the Amalfi Coastline. We stopped at
view points along the way for pictures and to take in the breath-taking coastal views. After arriving in Amalfi, we
boarded a boat for a tour of the coast, but this time from the perspective of the water. This involved seeing parts
of the coast to the north and south of Amalfi before we returned to land. After this, we were allowed free time to
explore the town of Amalfi for ourselves. This was then followed by driving back along the coast road back to
Sorrento. During the afternoon, we visit the Agrifarm Galatea where we tasted some of the farms produce such as
mozzarella and salami. After this, we were shown how to make pizza by the chef and then proceeded to make our
own. They were then cooked in minutes in a traditional pizza oven. After eating our pizza, we went on a tour of
the farm and then returned to our hotel. The pizza was some of the best we’d ever tasted!
On the Sunday morning, we had a guided tour of Sorrento with our guide, Vanessa, during which we saw some of
the historic sites of the city. This was also a great opportunity for pictures out over the bay towards Naples and
Vesuvius. Following this tour, we departed for the Roman settlement of Pompeii. Once there, we were able to see
some of the plaster casts of some of the people who lost their lives as a result of the eruption that buried the
city. It was amazing to see how well the ancient settlement had been preserved since the 79 AD eruption of Mount
Vesuvius! This was then followed by a tour of the ruins during which we visited some of the most famous and important
areas of the city.
On the final day of the trip, we left the hotel and headed back to Naples. After we arrived, we walked back to the
old part of the city and had some free time to visit the historic streets in the area. This was then followed by a visit
to the Naples Archaeological Museum for a guided tour. During this tour, we were able to see some of the artefacts
that had been recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum which were buried after the eruption of Vesuvius in
79 AD. This included statues, mosaics and paintings.
The trip was jam-packed and it was great to see ‘Geography in action’ out in the field.
