Barre Elks Lodge Presents a Check to Michael Zemanek Memorial Foundation Barre Elks Lodge #1535 recently presented a check for $200 to the Michael Zemanek Memorial Foundation. The funds were awarded to Barre Lodge through the Elks National Foundation Anniversary Grant. The Foundation provides financial support to widows/ers and half-orphaned children of sworn Vermont Law Enforcement officers who have died. It provides financial support to sworn Vermont Law Enforcement Officers who are faced with catastrophic situations, the nature Hunger Free Vermont Receives $25,505.83 Hunger Is Grant from Shaw’s and Star Market Foundation Hunger Free Vermont is excited to receive a $25,505.83 grant from Shaw’s and Star Market Foundation from their Hunger Is initiative to eradicate childhood hunger. The funds will be used to help schools and communities across the state to understand and make the best use of the federal nutrition programs that provide opportunities for children from low-income and food-insecure families to gain access to healthy breakfasts in schools, summer meals programs and early childhood care. “We’re excited that Shaw’s and Star Market Foundation are supporting the work we do each day to help local kids start their day with a good, nutritious meal,” said Anore Horton, Executive Director of Hunger Free Vermont. “We know that Shaw’s and Star Market Foundation sets a high standard for its Hunger Is grant recipients because the grants go only to organizations that have the greatest impact on fighting childhood hunger. Hunger Free Vermont also serves as Vermont’s primary source of education and public awareness on the issues of hunger and food insecurity in Vermont, bringing together local community engagement groups called Hunger Councils to learn how to best help their hungry neighbors, and advocating for the long term economic and societal changes required to truly end hunger once and for all. Hunger Is, a charitable program of the Shaw’s and Star Market Foundation, is designed to build awareness and raise funds in an effort to eradicate childhood hunger in America. Funds raised through Hunger Is focus on adding breakfasts in and out of school through federal nutrition programs and other means to combat childhood hunger and improving other health-related outcomes. Each Shaw’s location selects a local organization or food bank to receive the donations. Financial Coaching Program Receives Grant Support from Vermont Mutual, Ben & Jerry’s Foundation Green Mountain United Way was recently the recipient of two competitive grants to support their innovative K.E.E.P. Financial Coaching Program. The Ben & Jerry’s foundation supported the program under their Economic Justice Grant and the Vermont Mutual Charitable Foundation’s supported their annual grant funding to local organizations. K.E.E.P. Financial Coaching is a program of Green Mountain United Way where nonprofit, client-facing staff are training in the emerging practice of Financial Coaching. This work helps clients learn to set and achieve their financial goals. Through the program, both coaches and their nonprofit organizations receive ongoing support from United Way Master Coach Pam Bailey, peerto-peer support from the 40 current financial coaches in Vermont, and ongoing education opportunities provided by experienced community partners, in addition to the initial financial literacy and coaching training they took to become certified. Financial coaching has broad reaching impacts for clients served by a wide variety of nonprofits, including Capstone Community Action, county restorative justice centers, and a broad variety of organizations addressing food insecurity, housing, addiction services, mental health, adult education, and many more. “Now I can support my clients in a whole new way. Before, I could only tell them to get their financial lives in order. Now I can support them while they learn how to do it for themselves. It’s like giving them a life vest while they learn to swim,” offered Chris Wellhoff, Volunteer Financial Coach at The Orleans County Restorative Justice Center. Funding will support implementation and support of 40 current financial coaches throughout the state, and 20 new coaches to be trained in the next introductory training to be held over three days at Northern Counties Health Care on March 26-28, 2019. “The response to this program has been extremely positive from our nonprofit partners. These funds will allow us to continue our growth and to implement tools to support our existing coaches as they bring this unique program into their own nonprofit organization and as they work with clients throughout the year. We are grateful to both the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation and the Vermont Mutual Community Foundation for their support of this innovative new program,” said Pam Bailey who directs the program for Green Mountain United Way.
