Jarrett Krosoczka Visits Bennett-
Hemenway Elementary School
By Jacqui Morton
The students at Bennett Hemmenway Elementary
School will tell you that the Cafetorium
is where some of the school’s coolest events happen.
Indeed, on Wednesday, January 9, third and
fourth graders were treated to a visit from author
and illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka.
Jarrett
Krosoczka
and Bennett-
Hemenway’s
own “lunch lady”
Michell Parkhurst
The Voice of Your Community
Krosoczka, who has published nearly 40
books including the popular Lunch Lady series,
additions to the Jedi Academy series, and
most recently a graphic memoir, Hey, Kiddo,
delighted this audience before he even took the
microphone. As the students filed in and took
their seats, a visual presentation featuring Krosoczka
at work sketching and drawing filled a
large screen as an upbeat tune swept through
the room, leaving us all with head-bobbing excitement.
Francesca Tramboulakis, who organized
the event on behalf of the Bennett-Hemenway
PTO’s Cultural Arts Committee, introduced
Jarrett Kroscoczka to a warm welcome from
the students, who then listened and watched,
completely enrapt. Kroscoczka, who grew up in
Worcester, first shared how he feels lucky to be
able to do the job of both author and illustrator
for the books he publishes. Then he told the students
a bit about his background and the journey
that brought him to the front of the Cafetorium.
Dignity Matters
Addresses a
Hidden Need
By Amy Mevorach
Discovering that tens of thousands
of women in the U.S.A.
do not have access to feminine
hygiene products, Kate Sanetra-Butler
of Wayland founded
Dignity Matters, an organization
whose mission is to provide underwear,
pads, tampons, and bras
to women and girls who cannot
otherwise afford them, in a manner
that restores dignity.
“Women and girls we assist
are commonly single mothers,
low-income or homeless
women or women and teens who
escaped domestic violence and
cannot safely return home,” said
Sanetra-Butler.
Feminine hygiene products
are not covered by SNAP or
WIC, but “simply allowing sanitary
napkins or tampons to be
purchased with food stamps
without increasing the value
Postal Customer
Local
Liz Henderson and Ivylee
Martinez of the Natick Chapter
of food stamps would not be a
sufficient solution,” said Sanetra-Butler.
“Women would need
to continue choosing between
purchasing food and purchasing
feminine hygiene items as food
stamps are not enough to support
women in need.”
JARRETT KROSOCZKA
continued from page 1
“It all started when I was a
kid,” he told them. “I loved to
draw.” And he loved books, his
favorite being “The Mouse and
The Motorcycle” by Beverly
Cleary, of which he still has his
childhood copy. He read everything
he could, including the
comic strips in the newspaper
and treasuries of favorites such as
Garfield, Calvin & Hobbes, and
Snoopy. He loved Batman.
“Being a young reader you
can find a format you are excited
about and a character you are
obsessed over, but sometimes you
will be asked to read something
else,” he shared. This is how he
came to read Anne of Green Gables
and realized he loved it and
wanted to read everything written
by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Meanwhile Krosoczka fueled
his love of drawing, spending as
much of his free time as possible
using his imagination, learning
how to draw by copying characters
in the books he read and
super heroes in comic books. In
third grade, he created his first
book, The Owl Who Thought He
Was the Best Flyer. The last sentence
of the “About the Author”
page read, “He liked making this
book.” And it’s true, he told the
kids, “I loved using my imagination.
Writing is using your imagination
on paper. ”
In high school, Krosoczka was
hired by the high school newspaper
to be a cartoonist and a particularly
thoughtful art teacher
brought in some books to inspire
him, which they did. He knew he
loved telling stories with words
and pictures, and he went to art
school for college, where things
got real, with foundation classes
in color, drawing, and painting.
“I was also learning through observation,”
Krosoczka told the
attentive young crowd, undoubtedly
inspired by this Wednesday
morning talk.
Though he continued to make
his own comics and study art,
Kroscoczka had not neglected
his love of writing. In a college
course, he wrote a book titled
“Hello Said the Slug,” which he
decided to send to a publisher.
“Maybe they would like it and
make a bunch of copies,” he
thought. “Did they like it,” he
asked the kids?
“No,” he answered his own
question. But in the true message
of perseverance, the young
author/illustrator sent his book
to a second potential publisher,
then a third, fourth, fifth and so
on. While the answers were not
“yes,” he kept writing and he
wrote another book. This book,
Josh Had A Bad Haircut, he too
sent out to publishers. They too
said no.
He told the kids this brought
him to a new idea. “Maybe I
could get a job as an illustrator,
the person who draws pictures for
books.” So he made 80 postcards
featuring a character and sent
them out to picture book publishers.
No jobs as an illustrator came
his way. He mailed 80 more postcards
and then 80 more, and after
two years of the story going like
this, the image on the screen behind
him settles on a pile of rejection
letters. But what did he do?
He kept writing of course and it
was then that he created Good
Night Monkey.
With his next round of 80
postcards, he got one reply, from
an editor at Random House Picture
Books. She liked his work
and said to let him know if he
were ever in New York City.
“Well, do you think I just happened
to be in New York City
the next week,” he asked the students.
“Yes!” He of course was
in New York City the next week,
and he met with that editor. She
liked Goodnight Monkey, and in
2001 it was published and they
sent copies everywhere, just like
he always dreamed would happen
for one of his books. “And
I am still writing, and the books
that I write that my publisher
likes, they publish.”
Then he told the kids how he
makes the books. Sometimes he
works at a drafting table or desk,
or in a comfy chair. Sometimes
he is working while travelling on
a book tour, a plane or in a coffee
shop. It was on a book visit to
his old elementary school where
he ran into the lunch lady that
inspired his now famous Lunch
Lady series. He soon realized he
needed to find a new format to
tell this story, which would feature
a lunch lady and her sidekick
Betty, and their spy tools
that would disguise as regular
kitchen items. In the process,
Krosoczka returned to his love
of comics, and thus Lunch Lady
was born as a graphic novel.
His presentation continued
with glimpses of everything from
how pencil and ink and brushes
come together to create drawings
to how he was invited to write
stories for the Star Wars Academy
series. Bennett-Hemenway third
and fourth graders were the recipients
of so much wisdom and
creative encouragement that
morning, it’s hard to capture it all
here.
As he generously signed books
for the classes after his presentation,
I had a chance to thank
Jarrett for coming and for creating
his books. I especially noted
his recent graphic memoir, Hey
Kiddo, which tells his story of
growing up in addiction and
finding his survival through his
imagination. I asked him about
his message for kids impacted by
addiction. “It’s the same as my
message to all kids, really,” he
said. “Find your passion. Whatever
it is – drawing or writing,
sports or using your interpersonal
skills. Find that thing and do it as
much as you can. Know that your
childhood realities do not have to
perpetuate themselves into adulthood.”
DIGNITY MATTERS
continued from page 1
As the need is so ubiquitous,
Sinetra-Butler has created a
network with local chapters in
many towns, and a five-pronged
approach. Through “Dignity at
Schools,” “Dignity at Medical
Clinics,” “Dignity at Shelters,”
and “Dignity in the Community,”
the organization supplies pads,
tampons, sports bras and underwear
to middle schools and high
schools, clinics, shelters, and food
pantries in Boston and eastern
Massachusetts.
In schools, products collected
and purchased by Dignity Matters
are distributed directly to girls
in need though Catie’s Closet,
which provides clothing, shoes
and now feminine hygiene products
to the poorest public schools
in the state.
Through the fifth program,
“Dignity Beneath the Blouse,”
they provide personal fittings for
underwear and bras “to ensure
best fit, freedom of choice and a
dignified experience,” said Sanetra-Butler.
“We fit up to 150
women with three to four bras at
the time.”
The mission of Dignity
Matters involves more than a
simple delivery of products. Sanetra-Butler
believes that “women
around the world are the most
powerful, yet largely untapped,
resource in the fight to break
the cycle of poverty that entraps
families and communities from
generation to generation.” The
ability to take care of their bodily
needs is necessary to “stay healthy,
regain self-confidence and dignity
and be able to step up.”
In Natick, Dignity Matters
provides products to Metrowest
Family Promise, Natick Service
Council and A Place to Turn.
The Natick Chapter of Dignity
Matters is comprised of
Ivylee Martinez and Kelsey
Hampton, co-leaders, and Liz
Henderson and Dawn Sullivan.
Martinez, after meeting Sanetra-Butler
through a mutual
friend, felt compelled to volunteer
with the organization. “I never
knew that women and teens were
going without underwear and
bras, as well as feminine products.
It was something I always took for
granted.”
Martinez is the mother of
Newly Opened Taproom Supports
Marathon Fundraiser
By Amy Mevorach
Barleycorn’s Craft Brew, at
21 Summer Street in Natick, has
changed its name and business
model to The Kells Beer Company
and Eliot Taproom. Tom
Wilber and Fred Kelly acquired
Barleycorn’s in June 2017 after
its closing in March 2017. After
remodeling, updating equipment
and applying for and receiving a
Massachusetts Farmer-Brewery
license and pour license from the
town of Natick, the business reopened
in January 2019.
Founded in 1998, Barleycorn’s
operated as a brew-on-premise
business. Brewers experienced
the brewing process using recipes,
equipment, and instruction
provided by staff and visiting
professional brewers. The Kells
will continue to offer brewing
facilities and will also open a taproom
on Wednesdays and Thursdays
3-8pm, Fridays 1-8pm,
Saturdays 11am-5pm, and Sundays
12-5pm.
“We want to offer the Natick
area a craft brewery to call their
own,” said Wilber, “a place
shaped by customer activity and
community input.” Wilber and
Kelly, whose interest in beer
brewing was sparked by Kelly’s
father, have developed about fifteen
recipes for a variety of beers
such as a Pilsner with American
hops, a double IPA, honey lager,
and chocolate milk stout. Four
beers at a time will be served on
tap.
On February 23, from 4-8pm,
the taproom will host one of
their first community events, a
fundraiser for Boston Marathon
runner Katie Ring, who is a photographer
and Natick resident.
Ring will be raising money for
Kids Connect, a local tutoring
program for youth in grades
1-12. The fundraiser will include
raffles and a silent auction. A
portion of cider and beer sales
will support Kids Connect.
What appeals to Ring most
about Kids Connect is the sliding
scale. “Natick has a reputation for
being affluent, but not everybody
is wealthy,” she said. “People are
struggling financially. I don’t like
that our children’s success is tied
to financial wealth. With Kids
Connect, all kids in the community
are given access to tutoring.”
Having run the Boston Marathon
himself, Wilber empathizes
with the commitment Ring has
made and “the daunting task of
raising funds.” The Boston Athletic
Association requires a commitment
of $6,000 raised for the
chosen charity. “It does make the
miles go a little easier when you
know you are helping a group in
need,” Wilber said.
Ring has previously run the
Boston Athletic Association half
marathon, and the 11K Falmouth
Road Race three times.
This is her first full marathon.
Debra Sayre, Director of
Kids Connect, appreciates the
support. “Because of wonderful
people like our runners,” she
said, “we have been able to serve
students regardless of their ability
to contribute to the cost. The
tremendous strength it takes to
run a marathon is reflected in
their also raising funds to help
dozens of Natick youth.”
Prescription Drugs…Are They Necessary for Acne?
By Lisa Massimiano,
Licensed Esthetician,
Certified Acne Specialist,
Owner Skin Smart Salon
Going to a dermatologist and
getting prescription drugs is often
the first choice for many acne sufferers.
Patients are usually given
antibiotics and/ or a prescription
retinoid to use. When this
approach fails, the dermatologist
will often prescribe a new antibiotic
to try.
Achieve Clear Skin
Antibiotics for Acne
There is a growing concern
that overuse and inappropriate
use of antibiotics is causing an increase
in drug resistant bacteria.
Using antibiotics to treat acne
is an example of this problem.
While antibiotics may suppress
inflammation, a common symptom
of acne, they don’t treat the
root cause of acne. When acne
sufferers stop the antibiotics the
acne often returns. So, they go
back on the drug, creating a constant
cycle of antibiotic use.
Retin-A
There are no reported dangerous
side effects from using
prescription topical retinoid. However,
there are problems with using
it for acne. The cream form of Retin-A
contains isopropyl myristate,
a pore clogging ingredient which
makes acne worse. Even if the patient
is prescribed an appropriate
retinoid, the retinoid often makes
their skin so sensitive and irritated
that they stop using it before it becomes
effective.
Isotretinoin
Accutane is often prescribed
for acne. This powerful drug
is linked with many severe side
effects including depression,
Crohn’s disease and birth defects.
Treating acne
without drugs
The true cause of acne is retention
hyperkeratosis, an inherited
tendency of the pores to shed
skin cells more quickly than normal
pores. So, when acne prone
individuals use products that keep
their pores free from excessive cell
buildup, their skin will clear.
Using the correct products is
vital, but just as important, is how
the products are used. I start my
acne clients off slowly and gradually
increase product strength
and frequency of use as the skin
adapts. I find that most people
achieve clear skin in about four to
six months.
Get Fit with METfit!
A One-of-a-Kind Strength Training
and Conditioning Gym
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
Whether you are looking to
lose weight, get fit or build an effective
bodybuilding or powerlifting
program, the folks at METfit
are ready to help you reach your
fitness goals.
Conveniently located at 245
W. Central St., METfit is a bestin-class
strength training and
conditioning facility offering
more than 10,500 square feet of
open gym space. It is equipped
with professional-grade Rogue
fitness equipment, including
15,000 pounds of weights, seven
power racks, five competition
benches, cardio equipment,
strength training machines, sleds,
balls, bands, tires, ropes, 100 feet
of turf and much more.
You’ll find a strong community
feeling among the members
at METfit, along with a common
desire to put in the work
necessary and take fitness goals
seriously.
“No matter what age, shape,
size or interest,” Founder and
co-owner Bob Popp said, “you’ll
find that men and women are
committed to their fitness goals
and that builds an awesome sense
of camaraderie and motivates
each person to push themselves
a little farther.”
Newcomers are encouraged
to take a tour of the gym and
meet with a staff member to
discuss the gym and their fitness
goals.
“We will help you figure out
how to make this gym work for
you and your fitness goals,” Popp
added.
Individualized personal training
is available as are occasional
group classes in boxing and
metabolic conditioning. All at
affordable rates, with discounts
for veterans, firefighters, students
and police officers.
“If you work with our personal
training coaches, you’ll
reach your fitness goals safely and
effectively,” Popp added. “We’ve
got a first-rate weight room here,
and my business partner, Ron
Drago, and I are always onsite to
help you understand how to use
the equipment or take your program
to the next level.”
“One-on-one training makes
you accountable to yourself and
a coach,” Co-owner Ron Drago
added. “Purposeful training is a
core tenant of the METfit philosophy.
We’ll tailor a safe and
effective program to meet your
goals and ensure you use proper
mechanics during exercises.”
From time to time, a series of
specialized workshops are offered
in areas of interest to our members
such as powerlifting, how to
build a training program or use
the accessory equipment, such as
bands and chains, to supplement
an exercise regime.
Those members focused on
weight training and powerlifting
use what they learn at METfit
to successfully compete at fitness
shows, powerlifting meets and
Popp, himself, competes professionally
at some of the Revolution
Powerlifting Syndicate (RPS)
meets held across the country,
and last year, RPS invited METfit
to host the 22 nd annual Powerlifting
Challenge in the fall.
“It was a great meet,” Popp
beamed. “We had nearly 200
lifters and 500 spectators, a full
house. We expect this to become
an annual event held right here
in Natick, every October.”
METfit also runs annual
Membership Appreciation and
Open House events with vendors
offering free merchandise and incentives
for all attendees. During
summer months, METfit hosts a
successful youth fitness program.
Investing in the community is
important to Popp, and METfit
proudly sponsors Natick Football
and Framingham Youth Hockey
and runs several drives each year
to support the Natick Service
Council, helping families in need.
Middle School Team Big Plus For NHS Wrestling Program
By Ken Hamwey
Staff Sports Writer
Twelve Sectional championships
and two State titles put
Natick High’s wrestling program
in an elite category. It’s about to
get even better.
Two coaches — Joe Guidice
and Nick DiAntonio — are directing
the Redhawks’ Middle
School wrestling team, and because
of their leadership and direction,
a dynamic feeder system
is in place and its participants are
not only prepared, but also wellversed
in the sport’s basics by the
time they reach the jayvee and
varsity levels at the high school.
“The goals of the Middle
School program are to teach the
fundamentals of wrestling and to
develop a passion for the sport,’’
Guidice and DiAntonio said.
“We want to help the boys be
proficient in technique so they’ll
be ready to compete as freshmen.
Winning matches is important
but before that happens, it’s a
must for our kids to develop a love
for the sport.’’
Middle School wrestling is for
boys in Grades 6-8. Competitors
from the Kennedy and Wilson
schools practice at the high school
and also battle their scheduled
opponents at NHS. Natick’s Middle
School team competes in the
Bay State Conference (about 10
meets) and it also vies for post-season
honors at Sectional, State and
New England tournaments.
Wrestling for boys in Grades
6-8 previously existed as part of
Natick’s Recreation Department
program for youths. But, as Guidice
says: “Recruiting wrestlers
isn’t easy, but with help from Bob
Anniballi (varsity coach) and Tim
Collins (Natick’s athletic director),
we were able to start a formal
Middle School program.’’
Guidice has been coaching
at the Middle School level for
six years and DiAntonio is in his
fifth season with the program.
Last year was a classic example of
how it’s progressed. The Middle
School squad won the Sectional
Tournament, finishing first in a
30-team field. At the State playoffs,
Natick managed a third-place
finish from a pool that included
60 schools. So far, the program
has won two BSC championships
in its five-year history.
“I firmly believe that Bob’s
varsity and jayvee squads are just
starting to reap the benefits of the
Middle School program,’’ Guidice
emphasized. “There are five
boys who went through our program
and now are competing as
freshmen at the high school.’’ The
five are Jake Adellman, Sammy
Pappadopoulus, Alex Giberson,
Colin Daly and David Seiche.
Guidice and DiAntonio are
no strangers to wrestling. Both
wrestled in high school and both
were on all-star teams. DiAntonio,
who wrestled at Milford
High, was a State champion at
171 pounds and still holds the
Scarlet Hawks’ record for most
wins in a career (142).
While DiAntonio gives Guidice
the bulk of the credit for providing
high-quality instruction,
Guidice is quick to laud DiAntonio’s
work on the administrative
end.
“Nick is so organized and
meticulous in managing the program,’’
Guidice said. “He handles
the scheduling, the ordering of
equipment and uniforms and does
all the necessary communication
with parents. He’s also terrific in
helping the kids to correctly learn
the sport’s techniques.’’
Both coaches adhere to a nocut
policy — anyone who reports
is eligible for a roster spot. Currently,
the team has 50 competitors.
Fifteen boys are on what’s
called “the competition team’’
and the other 35 are on the equivalent
of a jayvee team.
“The 15 compete in matches
in the different weight classes and
the other 35 wrestle in scrimmage
matches,’’ the coaches said. “But,
at any time, a boy can displace
someone who’s in the group of
15 by competing in a wrestle-off.
Whoever wins will get to wrestle
against our next opponent.’’
Both Guidice and DiAntonio
concur about the attributes
they admire in wrestlers when
they’re assembling a lineup or
adding to their roster. “We want
hard-working kids who are mentally
tough and resilient,’’ they
noted. “Being quick and agile is
important, too, and they must be
coachable.’’
Anniballi works closely with
the two coaches, giving them the
freedom they need. But, they, in
turn, reinforce and promote the
system and the high percentage
moves he prefers. “Wrestling is a
sport that demands lots of hard
work and being focused on basics,’’
Guidice and DiAntonio
emphasized. “It produces the
highest of the highs and the lowest
of the lows. If you win, it’s all
about your effort. But if you lose,
there’s no one else to blame. It’s
all on one competitor.’’
Anniballi is very pleased with
the way both coaches deal with
middle-school youths and how
dedicated they are to the program.
“Nick and Joe are not only
terrific coaches, but they’re also
both outstanding teachers and
role models for our middle-school
wrestlers,’’ he emphasized.
The coaches listed a half
dozen eighth-graders who have
surfaced as top-notch competitors
on the team. They include
Tucker Vician, Matteo Mariano,
Louis Linton, Michael Anniballi,
Brendan MacDonnell and Shaun
McLaughlin. “They’re athletic,
know technique and work hard in
the off-season,’’ Guidice and Di-
Antonio noted. “Their work ethic
is strong and they emulate what
Natick High’s system is all about.’’
Both coaches agree that the
Middle School team has a chance
to win a Bay State Conference
title and a Sectional crown. At
Local Town Pages deadline, the
squad was 6-1 and was successful
in a pair of tournaments. It
placed third in the Newtown,
Conn., Tournament and was
second at the Natick Redhawk
Middle School Junior Duals.
The sectionals are set for Feb. 3.
“Our goals are realistic and, if
we win the Sectional, then we’ll
work hard at the State tourney,’’
they said.
Guidice and DiAntonio are
acutely aware that coaching boys
in the 10-13 year-old category is
a bit different than coaching at
the varsity level. They fully understand
their mission. “If boys
are on the competition team,
then we coach them to win,’’
they noted. “If our overall coaching
approach is done correctly,
then the boys will improve daily
and they’ll enjoy the experience
of being part of the team.’’
Joe Guidice and Nick DiAntonio,
who both teach at Natick
High, are young fathers with
young children. At some point
they’ll likely be involved with
helping their children gain confidence
in whatever they’re facing.
Both coaches emphasize
that their greatest enjoyment in
coaching at the Middle School
level is seeing youths develop
confidence.
“It’s a pleasure to see kids with
little confidence grow in that
area,’’ they said. “To see kids gain
confidence and self-esteem, then
progress to high school wrestling
is what’s most enjoyable.’’
Joe Guidice and Nick DiAntonio
are at the right place at the
right time and the life lessons
they’re emphasizing can only
be a major plus for the youths
they’re influencing.

Versatile Burnes A Major Plus
For NHS Girls Ice Hockey Squad
By Ken Hamwey
Staff Sports Writer
Molly Burnes is Natick High’s
all-time scoring leader in ice
hockey but she’s more than just
a skater who compiles goals and
assists.
Much more.
The Rehawks’ senior center,
whose career statistics at Local
Town Pages deadline were 55
goals and 51 assists, is a co-captain
whose ability and leadership
skills rate very high with head
coach Bruce Ihloff. The veteran
mentor ranks Burnes as the best
captain he’s ever had.
“Molly is a natural athlete
whose hockey IQ is her top asset,’’
he said. “She makes everyone
around her better because she’s
so instinctive. She reads the plays,
gets into position and involves her
teammates. Molly is a leader on
and off the ice and she works extremely
hard on defense, on penalty
killing and on the power play.’’
A three-sport athlete, the
18-year-old Burnes started as an
outside midfielder last fall on the
soccer team that won the South
Sectional and was runner-up in
the State tourney. She also has
started all three seasons as a midfielder
in lacrosse, sparking the
Redhawks to three straight tournament
appearances.
It’s the ice, however, where
Burnes now is focused and she’s
intent on leading Natick to a playoff
run. Last year, the Redhawks
downed Pembroke, then were
eliminated by Archbishop Williams
in the quarterfinals.
“Getting to the quarterfinals
last year was the farthest a girls
hockey team has gone in the program’s
history,’’ Burnes said. “My
goal is for us to qualify again and
advance farther than last year.’’
So far, Naitck is 3-3-2 and in
the mix for a playoff berth.
“Going far in the tourney is
realistic because we’ve got the
talent, we’re focused and our
team defense is effective,’’ Burnes
emphasized. “Also, our team
chemistry is solid and the team’s
attitude is good.’’
Ihloff concurs, noting that:
“Although we faced challenging
teams in the early part of the
schedule, our defense is a big key
and we’ll be disappointed if we
don’t qualify.’’
Playing on the first line, Burnes
is quick to credit Natick’s other
senior captain (second-line center
Nicole Maxwell) and juniors Nicole
Schnair and Jacqui Poulack,
a pair of wings on the first line.
“Nicole (Schnair) and Jacqui have
excellent stick skills and they pass
well,’’ Burnes said. “We complement
one another well. Nicole
(Maxwell) and I have played
hockey together since the second
grade. She’s fast, aggressive and is
a hard-working leader.’’
Burnes also credits Ihloff for
guiding the Redhawks to a pair
of tourney appearances in the
last three seasons. “Coach Ihloff
wants what’s best for the team,’’
she said. “He’s a terrific motivator
whose pre-game pep talks are
inspiring. He’s also an excellent
strategist.’’
The 5-foot-4 Burnes, a fouryear
starter who’s been a Bay
State Conference all-star since her
sophomore season, rates the best
game of her career a 2-2 tie this
year against powerful Shrewsbury.
“We were losing, 2-1,’’ she said,
“and we were on a penalty-kill
with less than two minutes left in
the game. I scored a short-handed
goal with about a minute to go
and we finished in a tie.’’
As far as top thrills go, Burnes
lists two events — the quarterfinal
game in last year’s tourney and
her assist that gave her the 100 th
point of her career.
Helping the team get to the
quarterfinals against Archbishop
Williams was memorable,’’ she
said. “That’s the farthest a Natick
girls hockey team has gone in
tourney play. Assisting on a goal
against Notre Dame of Hingham
earlier this year gave me my 100 th
point. That was an awesome feeling.
It was a testament to all the
work in practice. It’s also a tribute
to my teammates. Without them,
it doesn’t happen. My assist tied
the game at 4-4 but unfortunately
we lost, 5-4.’’
An aggressive center who puts
defense and passing ahead of
scoring, Burnes has a plethora of
assets that have made her a league
all-star. She’s got speed, she can
back-check, her awareness on the
ice is dynamic, her shot is hard
and she’s effective on face-offs.
Burnes also is effective in the
classroom. A two-time National
Honor Society student, she’ll be
attending Northeastern University
next fall where she’ll major
in either psychology or communications.
“I’ll likely play either
club hockey or lacrosse there,’’
she noted.
Relying on a competitive
philosophy that combines winning,
reaching her potential and
enjoying her athletic opportunities,
Burnes is acutely aware that
sports teach valuable life lessons.
“I’ve become a better leader
because of sports,’’ Burnes said.
“I try to lead by example and
by being vocal and supportive.
Athletics have also helped me to
overcome adversity. I missed some
games in soccer and lacrosse because
of injuries but athletics have
taught me to be resilient. I’ve also
can save you
learned lessons like being accountable
and to be compassionate
and consoling to a teammate
that needs cheering up.’’
Calling her mom, Ann, who
coaches Natick’s field hockey
team, her role model because
of her ability “to provide perspective
and suggestions when
needed,’’ Burnes is optimistic
that her line and the rest of the
team will rise to the occasion and
give the Redhawks another shot
at playoff hockey.
Burnes’ ability to elevate the
play of others is a major plus
going forward and Ihloff pays
his star center the highest compliment
when the conversation
turns to one of his junior wings.
“Jacqui Poulack and Molly have
been together for three seasons
and they’re both magical on the
ice,’’ he said. “Jacqui is similar to
Molly and as far as stats go, she’ll
get good numbers, too.’’
Pointing to Molly Burnes as
the yardstick for success is not
surprising.
