Ask any coach that’s
played New Trier the past
couple seasons and they’ll
all agree that the gameplan
is to stop the Trevians’ big
men. That’s been a theory
easier said than done, however.
“The game plan is always
to stop the 6-9 kids,”
Glenbrook South coach
Phil Ralston said. “Whether
you can do that or not is
another thing.
“I think we had a good
game plan, it was really at
our pace in the first half.
Defensively, we tried to
take away as many perimeter
shots as we could,
but still we gave them too
many open shots.”
Ralston’s Titans found
out that the Trevians were
more than just Ciaran Brayboy
and Spencer Boehm in
New Trier’s 57-45 win over
the visitors from Glenview
Friday, Feb. 1, in Winnetka.
What made the Trevians’
win more impressive
was that they essentially
did it without Brayboy. The
6-foot-9-inch center headed
to Harvard picked up two
fouls in the first 6 minutes,
29 seconds, including a
technical foul, and had to sit
the rest of the half. Brayboy
left the game for good with
32 seconds left in the third
quarter after hitting his head
on the court and bleeding
on the court. According to
coach Scott Fricke, Brayboy
was taken to the hospital
to get stitches.
However, in his place,
stood up his teammates.
Multiple of them.
“We went through a lot
of adversity during that
game,” New Trier coach
Scott Fricke said. “Ciaran’s
in foul trouble in the first
two or three minutes of the
first half and then he gets
the gash in his mouth, so
we were in situations that
we’re not normally in.
“I thought the guys that
came off the bench played
really well. We continued
to attack.”
After a first half that was
pretty equal — ending with
a 23-23 halftime score —
the second half was all Trevians
(21-3). And much of
that came with a simple defensive
adjustment Fricke
and his squad made.
“When we went to our
1-3-1, the game started
going at our pace and
we got some deflections,
some steals, and the game
changed from that,” the
New Trier coach said.
Ralston agreed with
Fricke’s sentiments.
“We went man, thinking
that against one big
we could go man-to-man,”
Ralston said. “We had three
really bad possessions
against their 1-3-1 (defense)
and that changed the
flow of the game.”
Much of the Titans’ offense
came from two players
— Dom Martinelli and
Mac Hubbard. Led by Martinelli’s
23, the two combined
for 35 of the Titans’
45 points.
Friday’s game in a way
resembled New Trier’s
season as a whole. Even
with multiple players who
will play college basketball
next year, it has never been
about one certain player.
The team is more about
the phrase “next man up.”
Against Glenbrook South,
that next man was Spencer
Boehm. When his fellow
big went out, Boehm took
over in the paint, calling for
the ball, becoming more
offensively-minded.
With Boehm (12 points,
8 rebounds) commanding
attention in the middle, it
opened up the perimeter
for Noah Osher, who finished
with 13 points and
Chuck Sweat, who hit three
key 3-pointers in the fourth
quarter.
