LakeForestLeader.com news the lake forest leader | February 7, 2019 | 13 THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Wisconsin man charged with reckless homicide in crash that killed state trooper Scott A. Larsen, a 61-year-old resident of Kenosha, Wis., has been charged with reckless homicide for his alleged involvement in a Jan. 12 crash on Interstate 294 in Northbrook that killed Illinois State trooper Christopher Lambert, according to a press release from Illinois State Police. According to the release, an arrest warrant was issued for Larsen on a reckless homicide charge on Jan. 24. He was taken into custody by the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department late last week, per the release. Larsen was then taken into Illinois State Police custody Jan. 28. The Cook County state’s attorney office approved one count of reckless homicide of a police officer, and two counts of reckless homicide involving Scott’s Law against Larsen. Scott’s Law requires vehicles to slow down, move over and change lanes if possible, when they are approaching an emergency vehicle, or any vehicle with its hazard lights activated. Per the release, all charges are class 2 felonies. State police say Larsen’s black Jeep hit Lambert at approximately 4:45 p.m Jan. 12 while Lambert was investigating a three-car weather-related crash on I-294. The release states as Larsen approached the crash scene, he failed to stop, slow down or move his vehicle over, and struck Lambert while he was standing outside of his patrol car. Lambert, 34, of Highland Park, died Jan. 12 as a result of the crash. Reporting by Martin Carlino, Contributing Editor. The implant stimulates the cochlear nerve, which controls hearing. One part of the small electronic device is placed behind the ear; the second part is implanted in the inner ear, connecting the auditory nerve that sends sound impulses to the brain. As a child in Michigan, Harris was totally deaf in his left ear and had only partial hearing in his right ear. A hearing aid enabled him to lead a relatively normal life. He starred in football and baseball at Watervliet High School and then at Elmhurst College before achieving his goal of becoming a high school teacher and coach. On Oct. 25, 2014, Harris lost all hearing in his right ear, leaving him totally deaf. “Nobody’s ever said, ‘Terry, at some point, you are going to be completely deaf.’ Nobody’s ever said that,” Harris says in a success-story video produced by NorthShore University HealthSystem. THE WILMETTE BEACON Wilmette exercise facility set to relocate to Kenilworth The Kenilworth Village Board unanimously approved a special use permit for a new physical fitness facility that will be relocating after 14 years in Wilmette. The fitness facility, operated by Body Science Properties, LLC, plans to relocate its Body Science PFT facility from 355 Ridge Road in Wilmette to 642-644 Green Bay Road in Kenilworth. Body Science PFT primarily offers personal training, but also offers group classes. The petitioner’s proposal to relocate previously received approvals from the Building Review Commission, approval for a tentative plat of subdivision from the Plan Commission and approval of a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Architectural Review Commission. The Village’s zoning regulations require physical fitness facilities with group classes to receive a special use approval. The board approved the special use with several conditions: no client ingress or egress through the facility’s west-facing door (which opens out to Exmoor Road); the business would purchase parking permits for its employees at one of the area commuter Metra lots. Woodland’s Academy hosts inner-city students for Black History Month event Submitted by Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Deer Path Middle School names winner of Scripps Howard Spelling Bee Submitted by Deer Path Middle School Congratulations to the winner of the 2019 Scripps Howard Spelling Bee, Lili Sandor (eighth grade), and the runner-up, Alejandro Orestano (seventh grade). It was another tight competition, with some very strong, well-rehearsed participants. Nearly 50 fourth through eighth-grade students from St. Malachy School in Chicago visited Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest Friday, Feb. 1, to participate in a gospel liturgy, a pizza lunch and a talent show. This celebration marked the latest chapter in a Black History Month tradition between the innercity grade school and the North Shore all-girls college-preparatory high school dating back more than 20 years. As she opened the liturgy, which featured music from the joyful voices of students in the St. Malachy Gospel Choir, Woodlands Academy senior Paige Bartusiak, of Lake Forest, praised the strong bond between the two schools that makes it possible for their students to share so many experiences and learn so much from each other. “Sharing friendship is something St. Malachy’s and Woodlands Academy have been doing for a long time,” Bartusiak said. “We have shared by visiting each other’s schools. We have sung, prayed, celebrated and have used our talents to entertain one another. We are so blessed to share so many experiences together and to learn so much from one another.” The service, held in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, concluded with students, faculty and staff from both schools join- Students from St. Malachy School in Chicago and Woodlands Academy joined in a Black History Month celebration Friday, Feb. 1 at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest Photo Submitted ing together in singing a rousing rendition of “We are Called.” St. Malachy and Woodlands Academy students enjoyed a pizza lunch in the Lake Forest school’s dining room and then a talent show with students from both schools performing a variety of vocal, instrumental and dance numbers. Woodlands Academy’s campus ministry, diversity and baking clubs joined with other students, faculty and staff to make this year’s celebration possible in the true spirit of “a social awareness which impels to action” (Sacred Heart Schools’ Goal III).
