Year 4: Week 4
Native American’s
Native Americans needed to use their
knowledge of nature and observation skills to
find food and keep safe.
We found a feather, you could see how
waterproof it was by the droplets of
water resting on it. Feathers help to
keep the birds warm and dry. The
children started to ask some great
questions.
• Why was it there?
• What part of the bird did it come
from?
• What sort of bird did it come from?
Something had been digging in the hole.
What was it likely to be and why would it be digging?
Dr Collins had also found a bone.
Because of the size she thought that
it was a chicken bone and had been
taken there by the fox. It had
probably found it in a bin after the
waste from a roast dinner had been
thrown out.
Something had been
looking for beetle
larvae feeding on
the wood.
We practised Tipi Etiquette, only talking when we held the Talking
Stick, passing the stick to the right (to follow the sun) and actively
listening. We used the Talking Stick to reflect on what went well
last week.
Dr Collins talked about how she had been thinking about the best
way of cooking the corn bread. One of the problems was the best
way of turning the bread over to cook both sides. This week she
tried cooking the bread in a foil pouch.
Mrs Jones read a story while the cornbread cooked and
Dr Collins kept an eye on the fire.
Each week the cornbread is getting better. You only really
learn when you fail at something, you think about what went
wrong and try a different approach.
The children approve
too.
The children made a Talking Stick to take home.
Matthew realised that
they could talk as much
as they wanted to with
their own Talking Stick.
